Topic: Justin Timberlake

Yes...I was channel surfing last night and caught this wicked guitar riff on the HBO special from Madison Square Gardens, so I TiVoed the later showing. Now, this is musical theater on a large scale. TiVo allows for ff during dance routines which look cool at double speed anyway! But I enjoyed alot of this show. He has one bada## band. Mike Scott was the guitar players name, and when allowed, really soared. In fact, there were many times when I thought that a guitar player would love laying some lead tracks overtop!!! I have to give JT credit for amazing talent. The best is when he sits and plays the piano. I admit to liking the boy singer bands back when because there were lots of pre-teen girls around here. They seemed better than some other choices! And Motown was big in my teens. So, go ahead and mock me, I'm willing to take it...........Granny

Re: Justin Timberlake

consider yourself mocked, justin timberlake blows and bands like him being popular keep real music with soul, the kind written with more than a dollar sign in mind, from hitting it big mainstream

I might keep you satisfied

Re: Justin Timberlake

OK I'll admit I like fellow Pittsburgher, Christina Agularia. I don't own any but I do like her bluesy album. And she got soul. Easy on the eyes as well.

Take care everyone. And if I don't meet you no more in this world
Then ill, I'll meet you in the next one and don't be late, don't be late

Re: Justin Timberlake

I disagree. I like a taste of "funk" once in a while. There was some excellent slap base! This was a professional, live show. I think it had elements of blues, rock, jazz..don't say no unless you watch it. Again, there was some great stuff no matter what you label it. And, Jeff, I've said before I like C.A.'s voice. I like Joss Stone and Fergie's voices too.  suhl, there's plenty of soul......Cathy

Re: Justin Timberlake

JT might just have the baddest band in the land.  I actually watched it twice last night, from start to finish.  He bacame a band leader in the Al Green sense of the word.  His band was live, he was leading them, it was not a series of cues.

He even took the time to drink tequilla on stage.

JT, might just save R and B

Re: Justin Timberlake

JT and Usher are filling in the vacuum that Michael Jackson created. They are what MJ should be.

I'll give you entertaining. The beats are good.  I cannot say I'd ever be in the mood to listen to it, much less buy a CD. But the vibe is good. I give them credit, just not my $$.

If I were given free tickets, I'd go.

Seeing a JT thread was REALLY not what I was expecting when I logged into the JB forum!

Re: Justin Timberlake

anyone can get a few hired guns to play slap bass and good guitar on a live show.  it should be expected if you are spending thousands of dollars on sets to bring a little bit of instrumental ability to the table.  like him if you want, but recognize he does what hes told, not what he feels, and that the music is being made for purely money based reasons.  there is no getting around that.  i do not doubt that his back up band had ability, like i say finding good mercenary musicians shouldnt be hard when you have a limitless budget.

Re: Justin Timberlake

Don't wait for me to like feel I've sinned..It won't happen. I have an x-Mother-in-law who gave up trying to make me feel guilty! lol  It's called "other artists" for a reason..I'm open to experiencing all kinds of music. If you don't like it no bigie, but there's no limits on who you can discuss here. And at my age, I've already used up all my coolness...Cathy

Re: Justin Timberlake

Right Suhl...its not hard.  So what kind of argument is that?  Joe played on an Ozzy record, not in Ozzy's band.  Mercenary right?

does that apply across the board?

A million dollar band sounds like a million dollar band, Young Justin clearly has been watching Al Green videos, a lot of them.

His band, his show, the whole thing, is a lot more organic and LIVE than your assuming.  The boy was stopping and starting the band, calling out key changes on stage, and the whole bit.

Do we fault people success or attempts to be great?

Re: Justin Timberlake

Cathy -this is a funny post for a couple of reasons, BUT I'm sworn off EVER dissing Justin Timberlake again.  I made this post about a year ago, about Justin being on the cover of Rolling Stone. http://www.jbonamassa.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=819

"Funny you should bring up the cover-I couldn't resist sending Rolling Stone an e-mail about Justin Timberlake on the current cover- I told them they totally lost their mojo and in a polite way to put someone on the cover with some chops that can actually play a guitar instead of just hanging it on their shoulder for show... fill in the blank...I found the current cover disturbing, don't mean to offend anyone that's a Justin fan...I think it was the wet t-shirt that did me in."

No exxageration, this was a little bit eerie-my fingers were just coming off the keyboard from typing this and my daughter walks in the door from dance class and says...Mom, you're not going to believe what crappy song we're doing for our dance recital and it was Sexy Back, which means once a week, for an hour from Sept. to June she practices a dance routine to that song preparing for the year end recital.  I think they picked it for the rhythm of the song, although the class started out being a jazz dance class, now its jazz/hip-hop. Everytime I was on the carpool run I'd hear Justin blaring in my ears...I served my penance. lol   Now, its your turn, even though you said something nice...if Justin has a message board tell him how you liked his band...eventually plug Joe, its all from the heart...you never know...maybe he can get him on Saturday Night Live or get one of his girlfriends to use one of Joe's songs in a movie.  smile smile smile

I found my daughter playing some of her old N'Sync discs...she didn't want her brothers to hear...they would abuse her...they are music critics. I always liked Just Got Paid or something like Money, Money Money that she use to play a few years back.

Anyway Cathy, I'll open my mind since you seem to have excellent taste in music...does he have something new out?

Re: Justin Timberlake

Relax everyone, I'm not pimping the boy, I'm just saying I caught this show and was impressed. "Sexy Back" and those songs don't do anything for me, but Madison Square Garden was packed with people who sang along. And, they weren't teens. Dino is right. He controlled the show. Everything was live, strings included. If it cost 1 million it looked like it. R&B is a family. While the Beatles were on the charts they shared space with groups such as the Supremes, the Temptations, etc. Acts that were "song and dance" Motown style. And, the boy is at his best to me at the piano. I do like the What goes around...song. But no, I'm not going out and buying any. I will keep this show on tivo for awhile and revisit a few sections.......We can't bully people into liking what we like. I'm fried on "blues snobs" and a sense of judgement on the taste of others. Look around here, not many people Joe's age and younger. How "right" does everyone want to be?                Granny

Very true Cathy. Everyone is right and each to thier own. Music is music and we shouldn't label it....if it's good then it's good.....that's all there is to it. smile

Re: Justin Timberlake

Justin Timberlake's guitarist Mike Scott is a beast. He is formerly of The NPG, Prince's back up band.  He is one of the funkiest rhythm players around, as well as a heavy ripping lead player.  Check out his solo with Timberlake here (happens at about 5:01) : http://youtube.com/watch?v=FdKQLxhiB2w
