Topic: Young Guns

I hope this becomes a popular thread as there are an increasing number of younger musicians carving a name for themselves.

Today I'll start things off with two guys I'd love to hear on record together, Billy Strings and Marcus King.
The two videos were recorded live at a guitar shop in Nashville where they're playing a 1930's Martin six string and a '54 Fender Telecaster.  Both guitars go for about $100K and have the prices attached to the necks in the songs.
First up is a nice cover of Merle Haggard's I'm a Lonesome Fugitive" that features Marcus on vocals and the second is Billy doing vocals on George Gershwin's "Summertime".
I've been listening to Marcus King a lot lately and love his interplay with the flat picking genius of Billy Strings.  These guys are tremendously talented.

Re: Young Guns

Speaking with Boscoe France prior to Davy Knowles' show in Evansville he mentioned he'd been at Crossroads '19 in Dallas and it was Marcus King who he was most impressed with.  I told him that was a coincidence as I'd been listening to a bunch of his stuff on YouTube with Billy Strings.  His reply was Billy was a sweetheart and a great picker.
Although not released yet, I've heard Marcus stole the show and put on a clinic at '19.  Here's a very humble King talking about being invited to Crossroads....

Re: Young Guns

I'm not positive but I believe that's Paul Reed Smith playing with Boscoe at Crossroads.  Gotta say the PRS is a sweet sounding guitar compared to say a Les Paul.

Re: Young Guns

At the risk of beating everybody here over the head, this last couple of years I've had the pleasure of helping and nurturing young French guitar-slinger Felix Rabin as he's been trying to get a foot-hold in the UK. Not only is he a really talented player but he has the drive and "spark" that was in the likes of Oli Brown and Laurence Jones when they were cutting their teeth on the circuit.

Much closer to home (15 miles down the road in Richmond N.Yorks) and while not strictly Blues I've been bowled over by young singer-songwriter John Stainthorp and his band The Laughing Hearts; superb young songwriter, clever musician and again, a certain charisma.

And you still have to doff your caps to The Mentulls, 10 year veterans and all still under 30y. And  their latest member, David Crabtree is a bit of a find - good vocalist and a talented singer-songwriter in his own right.

I'd also give a nod to Stoney Broke, while he is a few years older than he looks, it's only been a short time that he's been touring under this banner and has soon garnered a solid reputation for his shows.

Just struck me; couple of names that seemed to have been quiet this last year or so (to me, anyway...)
Quinn Sullivan
Aaron Keylock

Re: Young Guns

A name to add - Connor Selby; currently on tour supporting John Mayall, recently supported The Who and over the last couple of years has really been making some strong shows.

I can tell you're gonna love this thread!!  Looked up Aaron and Quinn and there's nothing since 2017 from them.
I have AK's album Cut Against the Grain and it's a great release.  Think Quinn played with Buddy Guy at Crossroads 2016.

Re: Young Guns

Going back a couple of posts, here's a couple of clips, while not Blues, are something worth mentioning. First up is a duet of the previously mentioned Dave Neil Crabtree (voice of The Mentulls) along with the first [gulp] girl we've mentioned in the thread, local lass Haley Mackay. If you've been dragged along  to the cinema in the  last year or so, you may recognise the song..

Haley on her own:

Harvest Moon - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vuytnE7i4hI

Along with Phil Caffrey, Dave & Haley are doing some acoustic gigs early next year under a Songwriter's Circle banner.

Re: Young Guns

I've been wanting to check out David Julia for a while, as he's becoming a regular performer a local blues club, and I've seen him on the bill at a number of festivals.  Yesterday he filled in for the scheduled act that couldn't to make it, and did a couple sets at Lakeridge Winery here in Florida.  I was pleasantly surprised to get a chance to see him.  He was definitely a notch above the bands they typically get, and I really enjoyed it.  Good playing, great tone, and a stronger singer than I expected.  His band was really good as well.  Nice to see a local kid do well and going places.  Check him out.

Either it's something in  the water, or else Winnipeg is shaping up to be the new Seattle....

In a relatively short time, I've encountered, Bros Landreth, inc solo Joey; Ariel Posen, Roman Clarke and now to be added to the list, Liam Duncan, who not only played keys last night for Bros Landreth, but also opened the show with a solo set of his own songs. In his early 20s, but already bags of experience from his local music clubs and bars. Worth checking out...

I listened, the appetite got whetted and I picked up If I Don't Feel Better.  Listening as I type and the album is real nice.  Btw, he is from Canada...correct?  Guess I should Google him up.

I've been quite aware of the talent coming out of Canada but could be better informed.  It started a long time ago with David Gogo who I need to investigate for new stuff.  Thanks Mike for a great shout as usual.

Re: Young Guns

Again, a lot on the folksie side, this is jessie Reid who has been supporting Dan Owen (himself a candidate for here) on his latest tour.

I believe there is an album out there somewhere; she didn't bring any on the road and haven't had chance to track it down yet.
