Topic: Bassman RI Settings

Hiya guys

So I've recently been playing at a jam night where the house amp is a 59RI Bassman. The guy who runs the night is happy for players to change settings, so I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a good sound with a) Les Paul and b) Telecaster.

I'm really thinking of something approximating what Joe's getting with his current rig. I know there are differences in circuit between the originals and the modern PCB RI's and I won't be able to run the volumes up loud enough to get power amp breakup like Joe does - but I have a transparent OD pedal that can take care of dirtier sounds.

Really like the amp and if I can find some good sounds in there it might change what amp I plan to buy later in the year!!

Guitars: Fender American Original 60s Strat, Fender American Vintage 52 Tele, Gibson Les Paul Traditional
FX: Various including - Ceriatone Centura, Fire Custom Shop Carpe Diem
Amp: Fender ML212 Deville + 212 extention cabinet

Re: Bassman RI Settings

This is how I run my 5F6A clone that I built:

BLUESKY AMPS “BLUESMAN” 5F6A/C (12AY7/12AX7/12AX7/6L6GC)
INPUT    NORMAL     BRIGHT     TREBLE    BASS    MIDDLE    PRESENCE
SC/HB    N1+B1       8              8              4             1            8             6/10

I jumper the two high level inputs together. Volume/T/B/M are set as shown. For single coils I set the Presence on 6 and humbuckers on 10.

Re: Bassman RI Settings

There are no magic settings for any amp.  Acoustics change from venue to venue and even within the same venue over the course of the night, so preset sounds will not really be consistent.

The best way to get the sound you are looking for is to use your own ears.  If the owner doesn't mind you adjusting the controls then experiment until you get what you like.

I know it would be hard to do at a jam, but what I do for gigs is set the Treble, Middle & Bass controls to zero and then adjust the Bass whilst hitting bottom 'E' until it reaches a 'sweet' spot.  This is when the bass starts kicking in.  Then do the Middle whilst hitting the 'D' string and the Treble whilst hitting top 'E'.  Finally I adjust any Gain and Volume controls to my preference.  Works for me

I never use pedals, just go straight into any amp with normally a Les Paul, but if I use a single coil guitar, then I just twiddle the Bass and Treble controls a bit.
