Topic: Good Unknown Bands?

Alright hopefully this will be an interesting topic... What are some new (or old) bands that you love who nobody has ever heard of?  In other words, what bands would you recommend to people who like the same kind of music as you (such as the others on this board smile )

Oh yeah and this is other than JB- I'm pretty sure all of us would recommend him to others

Here's my list:

Silvertide (AC/DCish band- great music though)

BB Chung King and the Buddaheads (great blues-rock with some awesome strat tones)

Griff Hamlin (another great blues-rock guitarist)

Guthrie Govan (Up there with the best guitar virtuosos- he can play ANYTHING- kinda like the instrumental guitarist version of Joe! great phrasing too....)

You might laugh at this one and I guess everyone knows them but Hanson has become a great band- my friend's girlfriend loves them and got us into them- went to see them up in RI last week and it was an awesome show- they're all grown up now and are great writers- they've really changed from their mmmbop days...

Brand New Immortals- I heard about them from someone on this board and they said they are one of the best rock bands ever.  I second that.

Detagoh- Name comes from Detroit and Chicago mashed together- heard them when I was up in Chicago at the Taste of Chicago- heard two songs and it was enough for me to get their CD then and there

The Steepwater Band- heard about them from another on the board here- really great blues rock band

I'm really starting to get into some of the good newer rock bands who actually can play their instruments and write their own songs- hopefully this is the way of the future.

I was going to mention The Brand New Immortals from my earlier post, but it seems you listened to them already kwsjb and included them on the list. 


Some are more unknown than others...
In any case, some great unknown bands include

Matt Tutor- (Memphis based singer/songwriter/guitarist who is a great blues player as well)

The Gamble Brothers Band (Memphis quartet of blues influenced soul-rock)

Frogwings (supergroup of John Popper (blues traveler) Derek Trucks (Allman Brothers), Oteil Burbridge (Allman Bros.),    Jimmy Herring (Allman Bros, Dead, Widespread Panic), Kofi Burbridge (Derek Trucks Band), Butch Trucks (ABB), Marc Quinones (ABB), fusing rock, jazz, blues, latin and funk.  Brilliant!)

The Brand New Immortals (Atlanta soul meets hard rock)

Vince Converse- (Houston blues guitar slinger)

Eddie Cotton- (Great Mississippi blues guitarist)

The Aquarium Rescue Unit (fusion rock band featuring Allman Bros Jimmy Herring on guitar and Oteil Burbridge on bass)

Oteil & The Peacemakers- (Allman Bros. bassist Oteil Burbridge's solo project playing southern-rock,blues,jazz-fusion)

Soulive- (soul-jazz trio currently evolving into a blues-rock/funk group with vocalist)

Karl Denson's Tiny Universe- (great funk group)

Carl Verheyen- (Brilliant blues-rock guitarist)

Charlie Hunter- (8-string guitarist who plays guitar solos and bass on his hybrid instrument through jazz and funk jams)

Johnny A. (boston based guitarist who records instrumentals combining blues,jazz,rock,surf and country)

Johnny Hiland (speed demon country-rock ala Danny Gatton)

The Kinetix- (Denver based rock band that can really play, adding elements of blues and funk into their jams)

Marc Broussard- (blues,soul meet pop...incredible vocalist)

The RH Factor- (neo-soul,funk,jazz)

Robert Walter- (soul-jazz,funk B3 player)

Scotty Anderson- (red hot country guitar)

Hello Vette, I went to see Joe 9/18/05 at Jackson Rancheria up in the Ca. gold country and Eddie Cotton was one of two openers for Joe. I really liked Eddie, great sound lotta energy. Ironically Eddie is from Jackson, Ms. and I saw him in Jackson, Ca., we shared a laugh about it after the show that night. Eddie did a meet & greet and fortunately Joe didn't as he was sick as a dog and had to fly in from Maryland just for this one west coast gig. It was only the second live show of Joe's I had seen and I met this guy sittin' next to me who knew everything I needed to know about Joe. You know him as diverson from Placerville. David hooked me up with the website and forum, it was a great night.

I saw Eddie Cotton first at a Denver blues festival in May 2001, then again at the Telluride Blues Festival that September.  Eddie was forced to drive by bus from Mississippi to the Colorado mountains instead of fly, because his date of peformance was 9/15/2001, just four days after the attacks of 9/11.  Not only did Eddie make it, but he put on an incredible show, raising the spirits of everyone in that audience after the horrific week we all experienced.  He ended his short set with a lengthy gang chant of "yeah yeah I feel alright".  After he stopped playing, the audience kept chanting "yeah yeah I feel alright", so much that Eddie came out and did an encore.  In my history of attending festivals, no other 1:30pm artists has been called upon for an encore during a festival that lasts all day.  Eddie's maginificent stage prescence was healing to all at the festival that day.  His "Born Under A Bad Sign" from his live at the Alamo record is inspiring to say the least.

Don´t know how famous / unknown they are in the US, but nobody knows Five Horse Johnson over here - they´re actually a Rock band but with a great Blues Harp player ... try "Of ditch diggers and drowning men" (great Slide-Guitar song) or "Feed that train".

There's a young guy out my way from Santa Cruz named Corby Yates. He plays sort of a free form jam style on a strato with his dad on bass and a one armed drummer. He's good, but rather chaotic. Google his name and check him out.
