Re: What song are you listening to right now?

so far this my fav from The Zealot Gene, but I have yet to listen to all of it thoroughly. Joe Parrish does an excellent job with guitar on many of the songs

Re: What song are you listening to right now?

Nick Johnston again only this time live. He is a phenomenal guitarist, songwriter and keyboard arranger. No he doesn't sing, neither does Joe Satch, Guthrie Govan, or Eric Johnson although Eric has tried several times with little success. Because of Nick I bought my grandson a Schecter guitar for Christmas. If it's good enough for him then it works for me

Re: What song are you listening to right now?

Put together by Mike Portnoy, basically just a spinoff of Dream Theater without the irritating vocals. They enlisted Tony Levin to play bass and the Chapman stick. Petrucci on guitar, they are excellent I must say

Re: What song are you listening to right now?

what a great album this was from the 80s, I went right out and bought it immediately. He has received a lot of bad press through the years, mostly unwarranted. Here with the talented Rob Wasserman on bass and Mark Knopfler on guitar

Bernard Butler - People Move On (2022 re-issue)

Bernard Butler should be much better known; probably the best guitarist to emerge from the 1990's Brit-pop scene but seems to be much overshadowed by the likes of Noel Gallagher; maybe Suede peaked too early.

Anyway, after a notable guitar-slinger for hire stint, Butler, much against his original intent, cut this debut solo album in 1998, just before working with soul vocalist David McAlmont and another try with Suede. I said it then and I'll say it now, the album is a little gem; there are tender, fragile moments and songs so bombastic they bounce your speakers across the room. Not only, but it showcases what a talented multi-instrumentalist & writer the guy is.

Then, 20 years after it's original release, something started a mind-worm while considering putting down new material and eventually morphed into Butler taking to the studio last year, with all the tapes from the People Move On sessions and doing over the vocal tracks. As the box set contains both the 1998 and 2021 takes on the album, it's interesting to hear how the fragile, vulnerable adolescence has veered into a more worldly view, while moving in the same directions. And Butler's done a thorough job, even the singles and b-sides of the time have been given similar trteatment on a 3rd disc as well as a bonus disc of demos & sessions.

There's no particular genre you can pin this album to, but there's a bit something for everyone.

Re: What song are you listening to right now?

from 2015 in Frankfurt Germany, Robben never sounded better than with a big band sound behind him, very well recorded. Check out his beat up Tele, what great tone he gets out of it

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjJLUFvUSNA

edit: this was a fantastic concert, I do love some good horns. However , the Frankfurt Radio people decided they would not release it on CD, nor on DVD. So what I did was to subscribe to hr - Bigband and now am getting all of it. If you are a big Robben Ford fan as I am you can certainly do the same. Hows about a Bob Dylan cover ?

Throwing it back to UFO - Phenomenon this week. It's on repeat, especially Crystal Light and Queen of the Deep, which always get played twice in a row.

LIVE MUSIC IS BEST

It's funny you mentioning that UFO album as that's a fave of mine also.  The music always seems tied to Uriah Heep's Demons and Wizards.
I have trouble sleeping of late and usually go to my computer to listen to music till I get sleepy again.  One album that I can't get enough of is Goodbye Junes' upcoming See Where the Light Goes (release date is tomorrow).  This album incorporates the great bands of my youth and is the band's best effort.  They're maturing.
Like UFO, they've tapped rock as it should be played.  It would be cool if JB could lend them a hand in the studio to scratch his rock persona.  I guess a guy can still dream and enjoy this fine music.

This song is pretty low key compared to the other songs I've heard off the album, but this is the one that drew me in to the band initially.  I like it.

I honestly had never heard of Larry McCray until today. He does hail from Arkansas but lives in Michigan now and has put out 7 or 8 CDs since the early 90s. He is good friends with Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks, here with Joe and band

I hope you're wrong about a possible tour, Tres.  And I love Lewis' cover of the Stevie Wonder and Aretha cover.  Pretty sublime!

Here's a fave of mine (the 2nd of the original 2 songs in my library).  Very funky and it showcases his guitar playing more...

hope I am wrong too. There should be a chance that he will tour in support of the new release, but 17 years is a long time between releases

and now one from Terrence Trent D'Arby

Elles Bailey - Shining In The Half Light (2022)

Nice to come home this lunch-time to find Elles Bailey's keenly anticipated new album waiting among the post.
As usual, a treat to the ears; a few of the tracks comfortingly familiar as Elles has released them as singles while most of the music world was paused: the brooding Cheats And Liars and the bouncing Sunshine City.  For most of the remainder of the album, it's business as usual; well, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" except that slide whizz Joe Wilkins has a new playmate in the form of Jonny Henderson on keys and they dovetail perfectly.

In the middle of the album though, Elles lets her Country/Soul really shine through with three "softer" tracks, Colours Start To Run, Different Kind Of Love & Who's That and Halfway House just melts into the ears.

This year's bench-mark album.....
