Re: What song are you listening to right now?

Older Eric Johnson stuff. Cannot get enough of that tone!!!
Also, I was baffled by the interview at Rick Beato.
(Search YouTube and Eric Johnson - Guitar Style, Tone and Inspiration on Rick Beato's channel)

Very awesome stuff and what a great guy!

Re: What song are you listening to right now?

I was at the University of Alabama in the fall of 1972. One of my roomies worked at a local radio station and one night he came home with Frampton's first album Wind of Change. We were all very much impressed with it. I didn't follow him much in the years to follow, always thought Frampton Comes Alive was a bit gimmicky. I watched all of this concert last night on AXS, it is tremendous. I don't know what year it's from, could be 2020 since he talks about a new release. It is a very diverse setlist, and he does do Wind of Change. One of the highlights if you want to skip ahead is Chris Cornell's Blackhole Sun that comes up at approx 37:20. I really loved it. He does the obligatory Do You Feel Like We Do, and ends the night with While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Guess I'm a Frampton fan once again

This is a great U2 cover. I watched his entire concert Sat night on AXS, live from The Ryman in Nashville maybe 10 years ago
or so ? We don't refer to this as country music, this is Bluegrass, there is a difference you know

Re: What song are you listening to right now?

Jethro Tull - A [La Carte]  40th Anniversary Edition
Yep; Steven Wilson has been at it again, rummaging through Ian Anderson’s master tapes. Always a bit of an “odd” album for me this one. After playing through many a copy of Living In the Past, this was the 1st Tull I bought as new: and talk about your “square pegs and round holes”. it just didn’t seem like the same band, aside from voice, flute and guitar; which of course it wasn’t, though not for the reasons sensationally reported in the music press, of mass firings and walk-outs.

“A” was first and foremost intended by Anderson as a solo project; with Anderson drafting in Eddie Jobson on keys and on recommendation Mark Craney on drums. And this is partly why the songs have a more contemporary “urban” rather than the more eco-friendly pastoral numbers predominating since Songs from The Woods.  However, to fill the sound-void, Martin Barre and bona-fide new boy Dave Pegg we invited to sit in. (Pegg joined Tull after Fairport Convention folded in 1979 and was invited to join for the Stormwatch tour following the premature death of John Glasscock). The result was maybe not the best Tull album, but a far cry from their worst, so label Chrysalis wanted it as a band rather than solo release.
With the much changed line-up, it was Melody Maker who jumped and ran with the sensationally incorrect story about band sackings - the facts were, Barrie Barlow had already given notice after Stormwatch and Dave [Dee] Palmer and John Evans had wanted time-out to pursue other music directions so in fact, Tull was on hiatus at the time and it was too late to pull everybody back.

Anyway, not to chew too much on old wounds and histries - is it any good. Well yes it is. Black Sunday was an instant classic, so I’m surprised the impressive but weaker Fylingdale Flyer and Working John, Working Joe tracks were the singles. Probably down to the original recording, but the re-working hasn’t lifted the overall sound that much for the album. However, the Live show from LA recorded on the last night of North American tour for A is absolutely superb. I’ve yet to check out the re-working of the “long-form” video, Slipstream - a while since I’ve seen it; but was suprised to read in the book that it’s from the company that went on to give us so many of the Cirque Du Soleil shows.

Edit: The 5.1 surround sound mix is outstanding! Okay, the technical aspect of the visuals are showing their age, but overall it’s not that dated though you can clearly see the band weren’t comfortable “muffing” the studio stuff where the live segments, the only record of the A Tour are pretty good despite camera limitations of the time.

Re: What song are you listening to right now?

thanks Mike, I have been a huge Tull fan through the years. I was able to see them in concert 3 times early on including the Aqualung and Brick tours, they were tremendous both studio and live. I will buy this as soon as possible

Steve Cropper of Blues Brothers fame has a new one out today on the Mascot label., he is 79 now, hard to believe as time flies.
I have sampled a few songs and it sounds really good. He has more soul in his little pinky finger than a lot of folks these days. Here is a sample, others are also loaded on the utube

Your welcome..... The LA live show will be of special interest over here as that tour only had 2 UK dates, both at the RAH, so this short-lived line-up will be of special interest.

Rebecca Downes (& Steve Birkett) - Stripped Back (2021)

Now some folk may groan, inwardly, or even outwardly to learn that this is Rebecca & writing/performing partner Steve revisiting some of their fabourite tracks from the last 2 studio albums and presenting them in a “stripped-back” semi-acoustic format as so many bands are doing, stuck in the post-Covid limbo. Well then I can only guess that those folk haven’t seen Rebecca & Steve in this guise otherwise they’ll know what an absolute treat it is. It’s how I was first introduced to them, as a team, and I can remember that shiver of knowing I was witnessing the start of something special; two carftsmen dovetailing together. For my money, one of the best writing/performing teams in the UK today.

And that frisson continues here; okay, bereft of the “live” feel we all want back with the music we love, but each song taken back, almost to a demo feel, but given new slants and emphasis; sometimes slightly more piano than guitar from Steve and Becs leaning more to a “torch”.

Picking a favourite, never easy, especially with these 2, but if I had to, then Hurts, by the thickness of a facemask.

Eric Johanson - Covered Tracks Vol 1 (2021)

So who on here has never sent or received a “mix tape” at one time or another? That’s exactly to sort of feel you get on this album of covers from Eric Johanson . Only difference, this is a “mix tape” where he’s performing all the tracks himself. And when you think, he’s taking on Chicago, Allman Brothers, Nine Inch Nails, The Cardigans, Free as well as Blues standards and a reading of House of The Rising Sun rooted round Hilton Valentine’s classic riff, he is owning each track. Such as with Free’s Oh I Wept, he’s singing it as Eric Johanson, not Paul Rodgers, but he’s got the feel of Kossoff on the guitar. And I don’t think anyone since Johnny Cash has given such a stripped back Nine Inch Nails as Head Like A Hole is done here. As you’d expect though, with Blues being a first love, Willie Dixon’s My Babe is pure Delta…

Quibble about the choice of tracks if you want to, but this, and I suspect the soon to follow Vol 2 is very much a personal selection for Eric; but no way can you find fault with the execution of the album; this is nigh on perfect. He moulds his voice to fit each song, losing none of the nuance rather than imitate the original, but his guitar work, it’s on that plane with Kossoff and Healey. I could listen to this all day… in fact.. where’s the Repeat button…

Going way back when there were no egos when they got on stage together. This is one hell of a show for that time, video is fairly awful but it appears they remastered the audio .............. I still miss Lowell George, and Paul and Richie

this album was not a commercial success like so many others, but I bought it and wore it out. David Lindley doesn't play on this title track, but he is brilliant on many others on the album. The backing vocals are amazing, especially on I'm the Cat, so I'll give you that one too

Re: What song are you listening to right now?

I have to qualify that I am not a huge Eagles fan, I like some songs and others sound like "pop rock", like Fleetwood Mac and many others. However, this is a great concert they put on in Australia and so much better than the "When Hell Freezes Over" tour in the late 80s or early 90s, whenever that was. I saw them on their first tour, I guess it was called the Witchy Woman tour. Then when they came back on the Desperado tour I made T shirts with the dayglow cow skull on a black shirt. They were all gone in about 45 minutes to an hour and I made 200 to maybe 300 dollars just that fast. I did not have a ticket to that concert, and I never saw them again live.
Excuse me if you've seen this but it's a cracking 12 member lineup and they are super tight song after song. I think they do 3 songs from Henley's Building the Perfect Beast including Dirty Laundry and All She Wants to do is Dance. The beautiful women (for the most part) in the audience must have been worth the price of admission alone, the camera guys did a great job. Anyways, it was worth watching again over this past weekend and I will probably watch it again at some point.
