Richard Hawley - Hollow Meadows

Less raucous than the last album, Standing At The Sky's Edge, more introspective, but the way Richard and the band add layer after layer of sound to underpin his melancholy baritone. Bit more Lee Hazelwood than Leonard Cohen, but an album you just replay after replay.

I'm old, so tastes have changed dramatically over the last ten years or so. Every now and then I run into someone that really blows my socks off, I just discovered her today. Turns out she is the daughter of one of our own Bonabuds. There are 11 CDs, so many songs I could post but this is amazing.

Lucy Zirins - What’s In Front of Me EP
May only be a 6 tracker, but the time spent at college is paying off in terms of the structure of he songs while still retaining the freshness and innocence of her debut album. Nice mix of textures, even threatening to “rock out” in places, good overall sound and a good little band with her.

Mike Zito & The Wheel - Keep Coming Back.
Crunchy, driving rock like Creedence, against everyman, blue-collar, themes in the Bob Segar tradition; what’s not to like? Mike has that knack of telling his, often personal, stories, as they are, no drama, no preaching, just straight down the line. Runner for album of the year in my book.

Troy Redfern Band - Backdoor Hoodoo

Mark Pontin Group - Textures
Remember the days when Led Zeppelin used to retreat to Wales, “to find themselves”? Well, these Welsh guys are doing first, before the current generation try it. Textures is a really appropriate name for this album, Mark’s powerful chords with a touch of Jeff Beck “trilling”, Dafydd Davies drumming like he’s controlling a team of wild horses, Alan Walter’s bass lines, the envy of many a 6 stinger and Mark’s wife Ayesha adding keyboard counterpoint and backing vocals make for a complex but satisfying mix. Not just power-blues, but some well crafted, gentle almost prog musings. I’ve been waiting for this album for several months, and it’s been well worth the wait….Cymru am byth ...

Trevor Sewell - Hollow

Superb new album out from our Trev; throwing mandolins, violins and the occasional banjo in the mix gives a slight "celtic" feel to things; not quite bluegrass, not quite Delta. Otherwise it's business as usual - as if Dire Straits did the Blues.
