Re: John Mayer Stratocaster

Hi, i can only say GREAT Choice!!! I'm sure you will be really happy with it. What colour do you like?

I have the classic 3 Tone sunburst, but i love this guitar so much that i was thinking to buy the Olympic White one and have it repainted like the Monterey Strat that JM sometimes uses in his concerts. As soon as i found one used, i'll do it.

In the biggest used market here in Italy i have also found the limited edition in Cypress Mica and last year there was the one with the racing stripes...and then of course there's The Black One, but that is another story (way to pricey!!!)

Let us know how it goes with your new toy smile

Hi, thank you, i'm a little while off being able to afford it at the moment but hopefully before the year is out i should have made enough for one so i'll make sure to let you know!
Out of the two 'standard' colours i tried i personally preferred the Olympic White because it just seems like a really classy colour for a Strat and repainting it like Monterey Pop Strat would be really cool. Before buying one though i am going to search around on the used market to see if i can find any of the limited edition colours such such as Cypress Mica as you said. On eBay right now there is an un-aged Black1 which is one of about 500 i think so that's also a possibility however there is no chance i'm ever going for the custom shop John Cruz masterbuilt Black1!!
Thanks smile

Hi, the guitars and amps i hear you have sound like an amazing collection, am i right in thinking you have Joe's old korina Explorer from the musician's friend Youtube clip? I haven't played many Strats at all really so i cannot compare the Mayer to all the ones you have but it is the first guitar i've ever played which felt perfect to me in every way (but that's probably because the rest of my guitars are unreliable vintage ones riddled with faults!) If you ever see a Mayer i'd recommend trying it. By the way i watched the news report clip that you posted a link to in another thread and your generosity giving away a JB Goldtop for such a good cause is wonderful smile

Yeah, the un-aged black one from germany? ...they ask 3599 euros!!! i paid mine 1200 euro (new) and i can assure you that you will not find any difference between the two...

...and by the way i don't like the gold hardware on it and i already have my black one..."blackie" they call it (Clapton CS), that is another wonderful strat.

For the masterbuilt version just buy some good sandpaper or pay some kid to drag your new guitar around your neighborhood with his bike for a couple of weeks and you are good to go! smile

Re: John Mayer Stratocaster

The Fender run of Monterey Strats are expensive. Big names own them, and they are rare

John Mayer http://www.rareelectricguitar.com/image … rat(1).jpg
Kenny Wayne Shepherd http://cdn.mos.musicradar.com/images/ar … 630-80.jpg
KWS had a reverse headstock put on his.

There are partsocaster replicas, however you should be able to find much cheaper.

.
I think they only made like 250 or less than this special run with the hand painted graphics by Pamela...
& the Fringe Leather bag is really something else as well....
(They were like around 3300-3500 new when they came out if you could grab one)

Re: John Mayer Stratocaster

I used to own a Shoreline Gold Mayer Strat and loved it, was one of the best Strats I have ever owned. Unfortunately I was stupid enough to sell it (I needed the money and it was that or the partsocaster I had at the time and the JM was worth more).

Loved the Big Dippers, really nice Stratty sound. If I could get one again I would, but the next guitar I buy will be a Les Paul...another JM Strat is in my future at some point though.

As it is, my homebrew Strat (built from licensed parts) is loosely based on a JM except it's Inca Silver and has an even bigger neck!! Pickups-wise it has Bareknuckle Pat Pending pups (one of the 60's versions - can't remember which) and nails that JM sound through the right amp...

BTW, they have a JM in PMT in Leeds...

Guitars: Fender American Original 60s Strat, Fender American Vintage 52 Tele, Gibson Les Paul Traditional
FX: Various including - Ceriatone Centura, Fire Custom Shop Carpe Diem
Amp: Fender ML212 Deville + 212 extention cabinet

Re: John Mayer Stratocaster

Mayer sig neck and pups are the highlights of the guitar IMO, not the poly finish body.
Overall, it's a great guitar, just not sure why Fender didn't use thin nitro on body and charge a little more.

Just a thought, but if it's the pickups that are the big draw for you, perhaps checkout my quick noodle of Big Dippers vs Lollar Blonde in either the neck or 4th position pup.....don't recall which pup I compared, perhaps noted on video, but these are the two positions where Mayer mostly lives on/what you hear him mostly play on:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7ei6QjjO_R0

Close enough and Jason stuff is killer.... cost about $275.00 new or take a chance at $300 or more and maybe get fake Dippers on ebay. Just find a killer price on a used EJ and drop in a Lollar Dirty Blondes and resell EJ pups for $250 and you have a perfect custom shop quality guitar with a good pro tech setup. You have options, more than I'm noting here.

Here's some of my JM porn to keep the GAS flowing....

Here's IMO the ultimate Mayer, FCS relic body and hardware, Mayer neck and Big Dippers...

https://www.flickr.com/photos/56515563@N02/14160496107/

Here's a current new build in progress using only JM neck, but with a tip of the hat to his old sig limited guitar in metallic Charcoal Frost, but faded and over 3TSB...will use set of John Cruz Wildwood pups for this project...

https://www.flickr.com/photos/56515563@N02/14987311029/

Or this one, Mayer neck and FCS singed Abby pups, not initialed ones....beware, heavy relic porn....

Good luck.

PS still don't know how to post pics here....any help?

Re: John Mayer Stratocaster

It was absolutely ages ago since i started this thread but i finally have a John Mayer Stratocaster, nearly 2 years after first playing one in New York in 2014.
I'm currently working at a music shop here in the UK which was fortunate enough to secure the PRS John Mayer Super Eagle when it was released and although it hasn't even been made yet and is already sold so there's no chance of getting to see it or play it, I have my own JM guitar to be getting on with.
I had ebay text notifications set up to tell me when JM Strats were listed and a text came through that an Olympic White one became available last Monday morning 40 miles from my house. £1000 later and it's here, i still can't believe it!
This saga can now be put to bed after nearly 2 years

Yep, the shop i work at was lucky enough to get one but before it was even made it sold so we're not getting one in the physical store, its going straight to the buyer... i really wish i could have seen it in person though!
