Simple "pop" song, simple lyrics, catchy rhythm, "hit radio" for sure... Sounds like Joe decided to rest a bit... Which is understandable with all that pressure... After all he is still a Human!

Would love to hear the rest of the album to make a full judgement of the situation.

Could not disagree more.

The only thing we deserve, is an opportunity.  Everything else has to be earned.

I would agree partially.I do think it's more of a pop song in a good way.
I don't think Joe is taking a rest.I would Guess that he is trying to be more of songwriter.I think you could compare this song to be similar to DTTD song.
That album had a lot I different types of songs so best not to jump to conclusions on the whole album.I realize this song is not a guitar scorcher.

It IS a Hendrix cover. This is what Joe said in a recent interview:

"We do one short instrumental by Jimi Hendrix to begin the album. It's only 45 seconds and then the rest of the album is originals."

Re: Joe's new song "Different Shades of Blue"

Just on the topic of the song  "Different Shades of Blue"  I really like it.  Usually it takes me a couple of listens to like a song but this one and the other two he played live in the spring show all got me right from the first note.  I imagine this may be the album that gives more universal appeal and gets actual radio play.  Not that Joe needs it, as we have seen this summer, Joe has something for everyone.

I am so excited I can hardly wait.  Another reason to say,  Joe is the Bona-Master"

I don't think Joe even wrote Asking around for you? Wasn't that a tune a friend of him wrote?

Re: Joe's new song "Different Shades of Blue"

+1 .... not thrilled with it, however the guitars are excellent and it sounds "on paper" like the hit song that has avoided him for many years. It could be a "crossover" into top forty pop and country, it has both going on. Nice piece of writing, wish I'd written it.

Re: Joe's new song "Different Shades of Blue"

Like the song, well done. It will have a universal appeal.

Tone off the Les Paul is awesome.

I can see this song done live with a lot longer guitar bits where Joe could really go off.

Re: Joe's new song "Different Shades of Blue"

My impression was that it had a country flavor to it, rather than pop as others are saying.  A "Nashville" influence seemed evident.  Of course there's a lot of cross-over country-ish pop these days, so perhaps it's all one and the same.

Regardless, I really liked it as well.  I also like albums that have somewhat of a mix of slightly different genres and/or sounds.  Bodes very well for Different Shades of Blue when this one is compared against Oh Beautiful and Love Ain't a Love Song.  Variety baby!!

Re: Joe's new song "Different Shades of Blue"

Very nice composition! I really enjoy the atmosphere this song spreads. Doesn't sound that typical and foreseeable. The lead tone is to die for. The ref is great and bears real hit potential. Definitely a style I really dig! Joe, thanks for that beautiful song!!!!

By the way, lots of guitar tracks on that one, should you ever seek a 2nd touring guitarist to play rhythm...well...count me in for the auditions :-)

Re: Joe's new song "Different Shades of Blue"

Hmmm I listened to the song once. Needs more listens. Maybe the best is yet to come?

yikes   You got that right, vafan!  They say don't spend more than 33% of your take-home pay on housing.  Wonder what the guideline is for Joe expenditures?  Whatever it is, I'm WAY over it!  Still luv ya, Joe!  You give us what we want!
