Re: Joe, the example for no drugs & alcohol
I was brought up thinking I'd get beaten down if I ever tried anything and my older brothers or my dad found out about it. They encouraged me to not blow my money on cars, wheels, and stereos (money pits), rather guitars.
I started my guitar collection at the age of 14. My mom said I could play as much as I want as long as I went to college and found a job not music related. The point there was to use music to "get away" and relieve stress, not put food on the table. Made sense.
Lots of friends were spending money on car crap and at bars. I steered clear and kept buying guitars.
More than 15 years later, I sit with a NICE stable of guitars, decent enough chops to play most places in Detroit, and still not blowing my money on alcohol or other crap.
