Topic: Jason Wells

Think this guy is about the best kept secret in Indiana, and I'm gonna blow the lid off it as quite frankly, his recent album Modern Vintage Movement has been getting deeper under my skin since I received a copy about a month ago.

Here's the US dates so far; I'd recommend checking at least one out if you're in the area. I've a feeling he could do very well over here too.

Jinkees!! Has it been that long since I last bought any of Jason’s albums? Well, there’s been two down the pipe since The Vintage Movement so here’ goes a look at the latest, hot off the presses, Nine Hours.

So, why Nine Hours? Well, according to the man himself, it was one of those, “must do” projects, get a band together, Evan Grubbs on bass, Jeff Lageveen on drums & Garry Smith on keys, get them in a studio, press record and see what magic happens; if it didn’t, scrub it and try again or try something else. At the end of 9 hours tracking, this album is the result and it just crackles with energy from start to finish, there’s a great loose & live feel to it.

Opener is a searing “jam” of a track, Warm Up 2, and already the band are away like a flight of F100 Super Sabres. Got Me A Woman is a driving Blues anthem, simple but infectious riff and hot lead runs. This driving power continues through Chase The Dragon where Garry’s keys come more forward, carrying the song along. Slowing down and getting a little funky, we go Down By The River with some excellent electric piano. Back again to the driving Blues, we have Fooling Around with a blazing lead break toward the end. Move My Soul is a showcase for the band to really rock out with a buzz-saw riff from Jason over a strong backline backbone. A change of direction, East Moline is pure rock’n'roll and surely tips it’s hat to Chuck Berry. My Love Is Real is another pounding rock track, underpinned with a funky bass line, courtesy of Evan until it’s picked up by Jason for a hot solo break. I have to admit, the country-styled If I Was Rich and Famous isn’t my favourite track on the album, but being the shortest at under 3 minutes, it doesn’t outstay its welcome and serves as a break for the album closer Waiting To Come Down,. a swirling power-ballad that has the band really cooking.

Okay, so they could have booked a studio for a month and taken time to tighten-up here and polish there, but for those of us an ocean and a bit away from Indiana, this is as close to a Jason Wells Band gig as we’ll get for now but if he did get over here and play this album, like this, I’d be happy, very happy.

Jason has an interview in upcoming issues of Blues Matters and Fireworks with a track appearing on the Cd which accompanies the latter. He's determined to give the UK a crack.
