Hey Joe,
My 2 cents..Get to a highly regarded hand specialist, STAT!!!
Sorry to hear this, I don't know exactly whats going on and I'm not a Dr. BUT I have had wrist and hand pain which radiates across the top of my hand. I went to a hand specialist a year ago...I think its overuse...it just started acting up again...severe multi-tasking around the holidays. The Dr. recommended I return for a test which checks out all the hand nerves etc., (common for carpal tunnel) but I did get relief and never went back for the test.
OTC anti-inflammatories and these wrist support things...mine are entirely soft, there are no stiff parts like someone would wear for a break or the kind sometimes drummers wear. The company is Comfort Cool and mine were distributed through this source. (I bought mine at the Dr.'s office) They most look like the model on the bottom row center. I'm thinking the Dr. may recommend icing. Remember ice is your friend, after you practice and play guitar make ice your buddy...seriously, it reduces inflammation. Sometimes, a routine of timed ice and heat are good, it depends, don't do heat unless the Dr says so...
You need to check with a Dr. I'm sure our problems aren't the same, BUT these support things help back off the symptoms of overuse, I only sometimes wear them when I'm home and I'm in a flare-up. They seem to calm things down, then I go back to things as usual and only occasionally take motrin or advil...
Here's hoping you don't need surgery and there is an easy fix to your problem! Take two aspirin and call me in the morning.
Seriously, GOOD LUCK in getting relief. This post made me think of my grandmother who lost her husband at a young age and took up with a surgeon...she was quite a story teller and she told me how he had an insurance policy on his hands...when I got older, I understood how it wasn't bull...
