Topic: Richmond VA tour

Dear Joe: I watched you at the Richmond venue.  I would like to offer some unsolicited advice from one who has been there.  After your tour ends, I would  suggest that you put down the guitar for a month or so break.  You have gotten into a groove where you are copying rather than finding your own sound.  I heard Eric Johnson, James Burton, Gary Moore Jeff Beck but not Joe Bonamassa. I learned that you can only do so much with the blues. Take time to listen to every different kind of music out there ie African, Middle Eastern you name it ( this helped me become more creative.  I learned that you can only do so much with the blues.   I  also think you would greatly benefit from working with a dance or body coach.  You are very stiff and have a limited number of stances.  This would be very helpful to help you look more self confident. I had a real hard time with that aswell.  You are tall and thin and can probably accomplish some great strides and poses.  Lastly I would suggest that during the time you set the guitar down (obviously you know how to play already)  take some creative writing classes, poetry etc.  This helped me write my own songs.  You are a great guitarist and but in this day and age you need every advantage to keep the attention of the public.  Best of luck.

Re: Richmond VA tour

Yeah, Joe needs to work in a little Chuck Berry duck walk or, better yet, a little James Brown spinerama followed by the splits - that would really be awesome!

Re: Richmond VA tour

lol I'm laughing so hard because of all the possible visuals on this. yeah, what about a little Morris Day and the Time dance action, but what to do with the guitar? Welcome to the forum gz but honestly this is a terrible first post. This is basically a "spin free" Joe site, we don't try and make him over adding this or that according to our own personal taste. He has accomplished much and remains his own man, he is NOT middle of the road "pop crap" that needs to add bells and whistles to make a show memorable. Joe speaks through his music and generous giving attitude, that's all you get and it works for him and most fans. May your second post be a better one, hang around and enjoy the company here.

Re: Richmond VA tour

Dear GZtone, Really? I mean REALLY?? What did you like? I am honestly at a loss. I was there and what I saw was a top rate, full scale show by one of the greatest guitar players I've seen in my 64 years. Who are you? There's a whole lot of "what I did", so I imagine these tips have lead to your success. Joe has never denied influences, but he plays "Joe style" with the emphasis being tone. Those that follow Joe can usually identify his playing with only a few notes. We also know that he listens to all kinds of music and used some Greek players on Black Rock. I commented to my friend at the show that I bet Joe was a good dancer based on his stage moves, so there goes the whole "dance coach" need. As for the song writing, Joe does it his way. Who else digs up obscure songs that deserve a new life and gives them such stellar reworks. So, nope, I can't see any of your points. But, welcome to the forum. Hang around, see more shows, and hopefully you will learn something else from Joe wink

Re: Richmond VA tour

Hi there DZ.  I trust you meant to be constructive with your post.  Evidently you have picked up on some pointers that have helped advance your own career/hobby, and I’m happy for you and your progress.

From time to time we all have a couple ideas of what Joe can do a little differently to suit our own personal tastes.  But a few points:

•    It’s well known to his fans that Joe has for a very long time constantly and continually pushed himself to try new things, expand his technical reach, and improve himself and his performances (see his quote in my signature below)

•    I doubt you will be able to find a whole lot of people who have listened to and surrounded themselves with more music and more variety of music than Joe.  His knowledge of music and its history is remarkable.

•    Joe’s popularity has been shooting up like a bullet the last few years, selling out 3,000-5,000 seat venues around the globe.  So he's doing a lot of things right!

•    He’s doing fantastically without my advice.

You can’t be surprised that Joe’s best fans on this Forum might “take pause” with your post.  Again I give you the benefit of the doubt that you’re just trying to help.  If this show was your first exposure to Joe, I do hope you will be willing and able to make an effort to explore more of his work and get to know his skills and his philosophies more deeply.  I think you will eventually be gratified.

Re: Richmond VA tour

Pretty sure this is a gag.  Pretty funny too.  I like the dance coach tip

Re: Richmond VA tour

Something I'm finding really funny, as a total newbie to this site, is how many people post these concert criticisms or "helpful pieces of advice" as their first posts... It's obvious that they just registered to make their point, stir things up, and then leave. Seems like a waste of time! As a new member to a community that has been going for years and has thousands of members with genuine respect and loyalty for this incredible artist, I feel it's much more respectful to just kick back and explore different threads for a while and post when inspired, thus building camaraderie with the fellow fans, rather than offering unsolicited (and insulting) advice. Of course, healthy criticism is not something to be frowned upon, but it's so obviously not in the appropriate context, it just makes me shake my head.

Re: Richmond VA tour

Actually, it is not very well known Joe was going to be a dancer...Here's a video clip of when he was an understudy in Russia pre-Bloodline.  When he broke his leg a few weaks [sic] after this appearance, he re-turned to the guitar...and the GIG was UP.

LOL, guess I took this guy way too seriously with my ranty post... perhaps he was joking. Or if not, at least he's giving everyone a good laugh. smile Hey, I'm a ballet teacher; I could give Joe some lessons if that's what the fans want to see!

I think many would want Joe:
in Black and White make-up sticking his tongue out at everyone with big high boots on.

Ah, and isn't it flatsman that wants to see Joe in a zebra pattern suit?

Maybe incorporate some of those "We Buy Any Car" moves?

Dear gztone ...... I would like to offer you too some unsolicited advice

When your tour begins i would suggest you pick up your your guitar and practice for 2000 months you will then be in the groove and enjoy everything around you
Secondly to add some spice to your new show take some pee wee herman acting lessons and dress accordingly, for some eye catching stances and postures onstage you could try moonwalk and body popping with some animal balloons on the amps
if your small and rotunde you could accompolish some multi rolls around the stage
lastly take some creative writing classes using the chad valley alphabet farm game or really expand with some fuzzy felts ... you seem very professional but these tips may help you make the marquee lights on broadway, but in this modern day you need all the high tech help to succeed in this tough business

Best of Luck gztone

This post made me laugh too! I'm sure if Joe needs career advice, this is the first place he will check.

When I saw the dance/body coach comment, I immediately thought of this!

I'm sure there are a slew of out of work Solid Gold dancers waiting to coach someone!

I honestly found this part the most amusing. Joe, put his guitar down for a month??!! Obviously has no idea of who Joe really is. I don't think Joe could be parted from a guitar for a day let alone a whole month. That's why we love him smile It's his constant playing, noodling, fiddling and messing around on the guitar that has made him the amazing player that he is.
