Topic: PSA: Back It Up!

About 3 weeks ago our home computer quit on us. Through some troubleshooting I found the hard drive had given up the ghost. Kaput! We lost the past 10 years of our lives on that HD. All of it is gone. Irretrievable as far as I know right now. So, if any good can come from our misfortune it's that I pass this info along to y'all and you back up your files so you don't lose them as we did. Please copy your files onto an external drive, or onto CD's or over onto what ever your preference is. Please don't put it off! Do it as soon as you possibly can.

Stay safe y'all!

There is software available that can repai a crashed hd. I've seen it work. I don't remember what it was but a search might do some good. Also you can use a service that is available for a fee that will do it if possible. Good advice though, there is nothing made that doesn't break.

I am a fanatic about backing up things in multiple places - and I still worry about losing it.  Hope you can find a way to get your stuff back - there are ways to do it, but probably not cheap.

Other than that issue I hope the rest of the summer has been treating you well.

Ouch, that royally sucks.  You may be able to find a service that can recover some of your files.

This past week I bought a couple of these for my girls to use as backup drives, reasonable priced, USB based, small footprint, requires no external power source.  So far so good.

Hi Jim, sorry for my ridiculous ignorance, but can I assume since it is USB based, this backup drive will work with both PCs and Macs?

I'll answer for Jim. Yes, I have a half T and it works great. just plug it in to the usb port and away you go.  Get a Terabyte one.

Don't wait folks. Please. Back it up!

Don't feel bad it took me two crashes to finally learn my lesson and now I have a Mac.

You can now get 64GB flash drives for under $40 and just one could probably handle all your pictures and emails.  Music on the other hand would probably require two or three with this group.

Well guys, it isn't as easy as buying a Mac.  Ask Spider.  It WAS a Mac!  Look, I was backing up critical data in 1976.  If you want something saved, you save it.  Simple.  And it is NOT that easy, either.  I have found the best ally is redundancy to the nth degree.  Back up a backed up file? Sure.  Have to mix the media up, too.  Who knows what will/can happen?  If you can afford at some point (we all should at some point) invest in a solid state drive to replace those mechanical beasts that WILL eventually cease functioning.  Those little (now pretty big) flash drives are great!  SO (what if?!) I have three of the same things written to all 3 (matched sets of 3). Yup, ESD and /or angrily tossed EMP's could obliterate those also.........Systems wide, your shielding efforts will be futile without incredible diligence and attention, technically, financially, or time-consumingly beyond most of us.  And if drives were ever built for QUALITY and were actually SERVICEABLE, maybe we wouldn't be suffering so...but that planned obsolescence bs.  It is bad enough we humans are creatures with a built-in obsolescence ourselves, so ANYTHING that outlives us should be almost worthy of worship.   Everybody loves stuff that works.
