Topic: Vintage Trouble

This band started their U.S. tour right here in little Salem Oregon on Wednesday night and really put forth quite a nice effort. Ty Taylor is a born band leader ...A GREAT singer....and a guy who doesn't encourage crowd participation as much he as demands it ! This band is really up for the symbiotic relationship between performer and audience. It's too simple to compare Ty to James Brown...but honestly...James Brown never sang this well....The funny thing is that the band itself looks like they just stepped out of a Kentucky bar circa 1850's after attending a wake for their best friend....Gray old time suits ...like having James Brown backed up by the Earps and Doc Holliday. Strange as it may seem..It completely works because of Ty's great presence and an outstanding trio behind him....This is a tight band with an outstanding guitarist in Nalle Colt and a great rhythym section Rick and Richard. Hard to classify into any one style, the show had Rock, Soul, Mowtown, Ballads, Blues, 50's pop encompassed in a band with an incredible singer and fantastic musicians. This is a hard working band...and I highly recommend buying the ticket if they come to your area...I know this forum well and this band is right up a lot of members alley...And they are really approachable and friendly...like Joe! Oh....and if you haven't seen it by now....(which I can hardly imagine) Check out the very frentetic version of "Hand me Down Blues" from Letterman....worth the view !

Re: Vintage Trouble

I just got into the hotel from Bluesapalooza. VT closed tonight. They never really got the crowd going and folks were walking out halfway through their set. IMO, first it was the wrong act to book into a heavy blues fest as a headliner on opening night. Second and most probably the knife to the throat, they followed Joan Osborne. She absolutely killed it and was feeling it strong in the second half of her set as the crowd rose to meet her half way. Too bad for VT. Personally, their music isn't my cuppa, but they are a good band and great talents. For those into this music, go see them.

Re: Vintage Trouble

Haven't seen Vintage Trouble live so far ... and probably their style of music is too much soul/funk/Motown for me ... just personal taste ... BUT ... this one is killer ...

2 with the same kind of restless energy ... get it on (at about 5:00) ... YEAH!!!!

Re: Vintage Trouble

You surprise me there Rick. I would not have put Joan into the Heavy Blues domain. Then again I only know her pop hit. we were on the same bill as Vintage Trouble at a Blues fest in the UK. VT killed it, I thought they were fabulous, explosive and captivating. That said we have done one or two gigs/festivals when it has not gone the way we wanted it too (as I am sure all bands have).

She and the band played a great variety of her catalog Martin, as well as some blues and classics. I was surprised too. Great act all around! She sang Shake Your Bootie, strutted around grinding and shaking it, and had the crowd in her hand. Her version of Tupelo Honey was also great. I and Helen were right in front and were dancing away. big_smile

Re: Vintage Trouble

VT was one of the highlights at the "ill-fated" Bottlerock Festival in Napa back in May playing to 10,000 plus in the middle of the day. Hearing of people walking out on the closing act of a day long festival reminds me of a similar situation that happened to Joe a few years back. Shred & I were at the Fire On The Mountain Fest in Sonora, Ca. about 4 years ago. The music started @ 11 AM and Joe was the closing act following Tommy Castro who had just lit up the crowd with his then horn backed band and also featuring Magic Dick on harp. Well Shred went Postal (as mail carriers do, LOL) when some of the "old farts" around us started packin' up to leave. Shred let them know in no uncertain terms that the best act was finally hittin' the stage. Their response, we've been here since this morning in 100+ heat we don't care if The Beatles are up there! I think in Ricks case the line-up timing may have effected the reception for a really rockin' act. VT is in town @ The Oakland Art & Soul Fest, unfortunately playing around 6 PM and my posse has been sittin' on free passes to see Tower of Power @ The Solano County Fair in Vallejo just 10 min. from home.

Re: Vintage Trouble

Interesting observations....I will agree that these guys are not everyone's "cup of tea" so to speak, because they are very soul/motown based...however...when taking a closer look.. they really have quite a variety of stuff...and there is just no denying that they are a great live band with an outstanding lead singer..

I think a lot of people are just not that familiar with this band yet....Had to be a reason they closed the show that night right? Because they're so darn good!I mean I love Joan Osborne, but if I have to pay $$ to see a "performance" I'll just stick with VT !!

If you look at the schedule for this festival the headliners are highlighted and VT is one of the 2 from Friday. Obviously the promoters looked at them as a bigger draw, being based in LA, than Joan Osborne. This festival has had some incredible line-ups in previous years, but other than VT, JJ Grey & Mofro, & KWS it wasn't tempting enough to travel that kind of distance, not to mention the expense to stay over. The true blues acts listed I know are Deanna Bogart, Jimmy Thackery, & Tinsley Ellis. I've been noticing lately that a lot of "Blues" festivals aren't necessarily that. There's a Bluesfest in Maryland with The Marshall Tucker Band headlining???? Holy Crap! I'm sounding like some kinda blues purist!

I love VT. They have such great energy. Still haven't seen them live yet.

Re: Vintage Trouble

was having a conversation about VT and Gary Clark Jr with a friend of mine.  Basically both bands have had high profile tours, national TV exposure, etc...  On their latest releases VT has scanned over 20K while GCJR is around 170K (those are the numbers I was given).  I think that points to the buying power of the blues/rock fan.  I'm in NJ and have heard Gary's tune a couple times on the radio but that's it.  I've seen the Hair Saloon commercial more than that.  Probably more $ spent on Clark too.  The big names have all given a thumbs up to GC.  The Guitar Player crowd makes a big impact....

Re: Vintage Trouble

Murfdog, I'm sure you're aware that Steve started out as the Steve Miller Blues Band, but that string of FM friendly rock hits in the '70's didn't hurt his bank account. In recent years he's gravitated back to his roots with a blues set sandwiched by the classic rock hits to keep the ticket buyers happy.

Re: Vintage Trouble

In my opinion Vintage Trouble is one of the best newer bands in music today (along with Rival Sons). If you think they fall into the R&B catagory you have not checked out enough of their music, they rock and they do blues as well. I have not seen them live but have the new live DVD as well as checked out most of the videos on you tube and find their style exciting and refreshing. Don't get caught up on the cliothes as this is just part of the show (like Joe's suits).

I am assuming the sales figures Billy Walton Band posted are for the U.S. since they have not broke here but have certainly taken off in Britain. Remember Gary Clark Jr has had the exposure of 2 Crossroads festivals and touring opening for Clapton in the U.S. Vintage Trouble has not done much yet as far as U.S. tours here but overseas have opened for Bon Jovi and the Who. I am expecting them to do well in the U.S. especially with Doc McGhee managing them.

I'll be catching them live in September when they come to Milwaukee, looking forward to it.

They opened for The Who stateside as well. Catch 'em live Rev, they take it to the next level in person. Anybody that doesn't "get" these guys is lacking a pulse!

Re: Vintage Trouble

Had the pleasure of seeing these guys live this past Saturday in Milwaukee. What a dynamic live band. Of the newer bands I've seen live the last year or so I would put these guys second only to Rival Sons for their performance. Ty's vocals are just fantastic live and the whole band is tight. If you get the chance go see them, well deserving of any hype they have gotten.
