Topic: Is This Lick Right? Midnight Blues (Beacon Theatre)

hello all, i have been spending the last few days using my tascam cd-gt2 to slow down some parts of midnight blues live at the beacon theatre so that i can transcribe the whole song. today i ran into a lick that i found particularly difficult to get, however i think i have it,

its the lick at 4:44 of this video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggLgFDzqwCA

i think it is as follows

e (---13----------13---15---18---15---13-------15---13----------------13--------------------------------------------------------------------------)
B (---------16----------------------------------16--------------16---16---------16---13----------16---13----------------13b16-------------------)
G (-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------15----------------15---12-----------------------------)
D (---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------)
A (---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------)
E (---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------)

if anyone can listen to it and help me figure out if this is 100% correct i would greatly appreciate it!

oh and there is finger vibrato on that last note

Re: Is This Lick Right? Midnight Blues (Beacon Theatre)

I think you are pretty close...  I listened to that section slowed down with Transcribe! and this is what I got:

E|.13....13.15.18.15.13....15.13............13................................
B|....16................16.......16.15^(16)....16.13....16.13\11....13^(16)~~~
G|...................................................15..........12...........

On the 12th note, there is that funky bend from (15) to (16) on the B string which is actually quite tricky to do at speed.  That last bend is a doozy too - up three whole semitones.  It's hard enough on my 10-46 gauge strings, but Joe uses 11's so he must have rock climber strength fingers to bend it up that far that do that long sustaining vibrato! cool

Re: Is This Lick Right? Midnight Blues (Beacon Theatre)

thanks for your reply! i'll try it out that way when i have a chance, i also have another lick from that song that i have a question about, i'll post it later today!

Re: Is This Lick Right? Midnight Blues (Beacon Theatre)

after trying it, your way sounds closer to what he is doing and looks closer to what his hands are doing, so thank you for your reply Devan! the other lick in the solo that i feel needs double checking starts at 5:22 of the same video and ends at 5:32

The way i have it tabbed out is...

e (--18b20--18--15--------------15--------------15------------15-------------15------------15------------15------------15-------------15------)
B (----------------------16--18----------16--18-------16--18--------16--18-------16--18-------16--18-------16--18-------16--18-----------)
G (---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------)
D (---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------)
A (---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------)
E (---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------)

e (-------------15--------------15--------------15--18--16--15------16--15------------15----------------------------------------------------------)
B (---16--18--------16--18---------16--18----------------------18------------18--16-------18--16--15------16--15------16--15-------------)

Re: Is This Lick Right? Midnight Blues (Beacon Theatre)

Haven't tried these out yet, but I will shortly.  Not likely to be able offer any improvement, I just love getting new tab's of Joe's music.

Review to follow.
