Topic: Clearsonic plexi shield query

I'd like to get a Clearsonic plexi shield for my half stack. Now I'd like to have a 2-panel shield that gives me a V shape in front of one 4x12 cab. Joe's Clearsonic JB-4 would give me a VV for one cab, as shown in this picture: http://www.thomann.de/gb/clearsonic_jb4.htm
However, I read somewhere on this forum that the hinges should be right in the middle of the cab for best tonal results and Joe's signature Clearsonic appears to be made for a double half-stack, as seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Bemvjd-c5U
Is there a Joe's Clearsonic JB-2 for a single 4x12 half-stack for sale? Thomann does not sell any Clearsonic A3-2 shields. Are these available at all? Of course, I could get Joe's Joe's Clearsonic JB-4 and cut it in half but that's not my first option.
Or, as it just occurred to me, can the hinges be removed easily from the panels, i.e. are not glued to them? So I could turn the Clearsonic JB-4 into two 2-panel baffles.
Anyone in the know?

Re: Clearsonic plexi shield query

depends how authentic you want to be and how much $ching$ you wanna spend.

I made my own plexi glass baffles from two sheets and some clear mailing tape from Lowes or Home Depot. The project cost around $20 some dollars. I like mine a LOT, and I wanted to do this as a test before I bought clearsonic ones. That was 4 years ago, and now I can muster enough to pay the money cause I'm most certainly happy with what I already have.

You can V a 4x12, and it doesn't have to be a VV, Joe actually has his amps only use a vertical 2x12 per 4x12 cab, so he is baffling the amps individually. I see no problem with one V in a 4x12 for one amp.

Re: Clearsonic plexi shield query

A few years ago I made some small W shaped shield for two 2x12 cabs I was using. I used the same extruded plastic hinge material ClearSonic uses (which isn't real cheap) and the nicer, thicker panels of plexi, (also expensive). I cut the corners at 45 degrees, the whole 9 yards. It was a royal pain to get the panels into the hinge and until I was finished it wasn't a huge savings over just buying one from them. But I wanted to make my own.

Also have a taller V shaped one I made with a regular screw in hinge and used thinner, much cheaper plexi material. The effect is pretty similar but the thicker stuff is much more stable and works a little better at isolating the mic, and containing volume.

So that's my take on two different options of DIY shields. I'd say if you want a good one, email them. The make just a regular, single V shaped shield for your 4x12. Or if you're content with a regular screw in piano hinge, you can pick one up and some thick plexi if you have the resources nearby. That will save you some $ and only takes a short while to make.

Re: Clearsonic plexi shield query

I've read about people using the Clearsonic shields and don't believe the hinge has to be in the middle. I want the A-3. I experimented with just a large framed poster set up in front of my Marshall half stack. It worked to cut the "bullets" to my ears.

Re: Clearsonic plexi shield query

This may be a silly question, but would a plexi baffle make any difference for home use? Or is it just a live thing?

Thanks!

Re: Clearsonic plexi shield query

The VV shape is quite exaggerated. It was more of a very soft W, basically. The middle "hinge" wasn't folded in right close towards the grill cloth. It was just bent slightly in the center. Using a 2 panel shield will have the same effect of facing your cabinet into the corner of a wall. It will allow the sound to collect and shoot upwards toward the ceiling. Having a 3 panel, all folded at 90 degrees, doesn't have the same results.

You're just using a 4x12, all you need is a V shape.

Logan: using a V shape shield of any sort softens the high end sounds, and the mids seem more pronounced. However, when you're placing a mic on the cabinet- behind the shield- the mic is hearing what's coming out of the speakers, and not what you're hearing necessarily by standing on the other side. You'd compensate by aiming mic toward side of cabinet, not at speaker.

Re: Clearsonic plexi shield query

I made one a couple of years ago, works like a charm. It breaks the 'beam of sound' and you can play a little louder without hurting anyone (including yourself).

Here's a short video of when I first tested it with a Marshall 4x12 and a Smoky battery amp.

Re: Clearsonic plexi shield query

I have some of these Weber Beam Blockers, they do almost the exact same thing, and it's less to carry around. Unless you want the "look" of plexi shields, I also recommend these. I have them in my combo amps. My speaker cabs I use the plexishield still.

Re: Clearsonic plexi shield query

Hmm, don't like the idea of beam blockers -- I'd have to open the cab and take out the speakers. Plus with a baffle you can take it away when you want.
I'll probably try and build my own. I'm thinking of 90 cm x 60 cm each panel. Plexi shields are not cheap around here. The two panels alone will cost me the equivalent of $150.

Re: Clearsonic plexi shield query

I'm curious to know how, or if, the plexi screens affect the tone picked up by the mic. With something like a SE reflexion filter (for vocal recording) the aim is to minimise reflections getting back to the mic and colouring the tone. Surely plexi screens are just reflecting a whole lot of energy back at the mic and colouring the tone. I guess they work great for protecting Joe's ears and reducing spill to the vocal mic, but how does the sound reach the front of house? Is there a direct feed through a speaker emulator? Is there some tweaking that has to be done to the mic sound?

I wondered if the distances between screen, speaker and mic were such that any phase cancellation issues would be outside the critical frequency range, but having done a quick c=fl calculation suggests any problems would be right in the middle of the guitar's range.

Re: Clearsonic plexi shield query

I wouldn't think reflections would be much problem if using unidirectional mics (i.e. SM 57).

Re: Clearsonic plexi shield query

Guitar center sells plexi shields for amps now. cant find them online though.
