Topic: What is it about this man, Joe Bonamassa?

Before I even begin this post, I want to make clear I do not mean to sound self-serving in any way or do I meant to insinuate that my admiration for Joe exceeds anyone else's on here, because I know it does not! I just need someone to rave about this man to and you all seem like the best people for that.

What is it about this man? I first saw him in 2006 and he has infiltrated my soul. I have become cheerleader (rooting for his success) crossed with someone who feels like a long lost aunt who knew her nephew was a star and takes pride in so many little things when it comes to Joe. I find myself smiling with pride at so many little and big things, and I don't even know this man personally! The success he is finally becoming, 478,000 "Likes" on his FB page, more Billboard #1 hits than anyone else in history, selling out much bigger venues (I love that!), having to add more nights to the Beacon Theatre due to high demand, are more reasons I find myself so proud of him. And I feel huge pride especially when I see the term "legend" to describe him, or "one of the greatest guitarist in the world", or "Guitar God".  Why do I feel this way about a man I don't even know, but feel as if I do? I anticipate every CD and DVD, and especially his concerts. I have never felt this way about any other artist in my life and I am closing in on 59 years of age. What is it about him that is so very addicting and seems to suck you in?

Again, I don't mean to sound self serving in any way, just wanted to ask the experts! Thanks for your responses!

And I want to thank you JimM for bringing Joe to OKC in 2006!

Your life came to some kind of cosmic crossroads of Junction 61 at Route 77...

Sure, maybe it can be done down on Highway 61, but the Heavenly Souls' engines are always revving up on Route 77.

Re: What is it about this man, Joe Bonamassa?

It was recently reported that he sold a 1,000 souls to become as good as guitar player as he is.

Maybe  he's sold more than a 1,000 wink

There is no worldly explanation for it.When Ifound Joe I needed a place to validate my sanity, and found it here!

Your rock candy baby
Your hard sweet and sticky

Re: What is it about this man, Joe Bonamassa?

There's nothing wrong with wondering why such deep "Fan"aticism hits.  It's something of a disease.  Just as long as it doesn't become debilitating.  As you know, you are among kindred souls, here.

wink

Play like you've worked at it, and don't worry about sounding like your influences.  You can't cheat on them, or your practice, anyway.  If you've worked hard at your skill, your audience will know it.

Re: What is it about this man, Joe Bonamassa?

All I can say is I understand!  Joe  and his music cast's a spell that won't  quit.

Re: What is it about this man, Joe Bonamassa?

Inluvwithjoe, ditto!!!

IMO, what draws us in so deep with Joe is the whole multi-faceted Joe package.  Synergy = the whole is worth more than the sum of the parts:

* Yes, Joe’s talent is immense.  I realize it’s complete heresy to speak aloud, especially here, but there may be “2 or 3” other guitarists on the globe that can compete at Joe’s skill level.  So it’s not "just" that.  Obviously his expertise is what initially grabs us, but our admiration goes well beyond the performances.

* We respect his commitment to working so hard for so long to do and get what he wants, and we can’t help but continually root loud and hard for him because we understand how much he deserves to enjoy his success.

* It’s his passion!

* And those consistently awesome vocals.

* The way his music somehow sinks into your soul and magically lifts you out of very dark places.

* It’s his maturity in not allowing himself to get sucked into the self-destructive trouble that often accompanies success.

* It’s his fun personality and sense of humor!

* His somehow managing to hang onto his grounding and suppressing/skipping the egotism.

* His commitment to charity and educational projects.

* His total respect for his family, his friends, and his fans.

* We could go on…

The more we learn about Joe, the deeper we’re entrapped.  When you swirl all the components together, Joe gives us a box-in-the-box-in-the-box gift all wrapped up with a big red bow!

I need some Joe...NOW.

Re: What is it about this man, Joe Bonamassa?

For me Joe is not only the greatest blues/rock guitarist alive today but he is a really nice and giving soul. Joe has help me more then he will ever know. For me Joe's music and Joe as a person has inspired me to carry on during the lowest point in my life. He is a inspiration of hope and a person I will always consider a friend. Rock on Joe, Rock on. It was rumored that Robert Johnson, born on the same day as Joe, sold his soul for success. When I try to explain the hold Joe has on me to my friends, that is what comes to my mind. I say, "I think Joe sold his soul to the devil because I can not explain his hold on me other wise". Of course, I am only joking! I know Joe did not do anything of the sort but his hold on me is explainable even for me!!!

Re: What is it about this man, Joe Bonamassa?

You all make me feel so much better about myself! Thanks so much for the great response to this thread.

Next Joe stop for me is Austin, November 30th, FRONT ROW CENTER seats!! Can not wait! Never been in the front row before!!

Re: What is it about this man, Joe Bonamassa?

Thanks for the shout out Nancy. My pleasure. Joe's first show was here in 2003. Sorry it took you a couple of years to hear about Joe.

I felt compelled to share my find after seeing Joe the previous year and the reward I was after was not financial but reactions like yours and so many more Okies have made it one of the most satisfying things I have done in my life since raising my family here.

When I first saw Joe I made the prediction that Joe would influence a whole new generation of guitar players and that prediction came through once again at yesterdays blues jam. The local blues society hosts a jam once a month and we occasionally get teen aged jammers. I'm sitting at the signup sheet and the 17 year old and his mother come over to sign up. I like to ask them a few questions so I know when and who with to get them up with so I asked if he sang. He said yes and I asked him does he have any song he would like to do which he replied a couple  of Joe Bonamassa songs. I told him to get ready he was going up next. I think I'm going to like you. He stepped up plugged in and ripped into Walk in my Shadows followed by Fire and Water. Of course I never told him those were songs by Free he did Joe's versions and I doubt he had ever heard the originals but what impressed me the most was the kid just went up there and owned the stage no fear. I think he picked a good guy to emulate.

Re: What is it about this man, Joe Bonamassa?

Apparently he does it all the way, jim! cool You say, you're next, he wastes no time...BOOM!
Something about a person who's nerves won't never shake...And that's certainly another way to emulate Joe!

I guess you missed that recent show review on Joe back in May 2013.
I think it was Vancouvers review... now I have to go look.

I'd like to hear this ^ "explainable" ^ hold Joe has on you! wink  But, Inluvwithjoe my dear, how do you know Joe did not make a deal with the devil? Hmmmmm?! big_smile  Joe once declared in an interview, "actually I did"......the punch line is Joe had a punch line.  It was a deal concerning "fingering" something out technique!  lol
