Re: How did you discover Joe?

I got one of those 'next big thing' cd's in Planet Rock magazine-think they were all live tracks- and Woke Up Dreaming was on it from Live From Nowhere Inparticular. I was a fan of Nils Lofgren and thought HE was quick,Joe just blew me away! Bought that cd,then went back in the catalogue, then present day,saw him a few times, got his signature tattooed on my arm etc etc......looking forward to Edinburgh!

Come on you Blades!

Re: How did you discover Joe?

It was actually by seeing his name mentioned repeatedly on the much maligned/hated/dissed TheGearPage.net forums.

I thought: "better check this dude out that everyone is getting so worked up about" and BAM! became a fan.   I know a lot of other members on there are introduced to Joe in a similar way.

After a few years of a dying marriage then divorce I was looking for the musical cure, so I asked a guitar player who I should be listening to, which lead to my roomie buying Rockpalast and A New Day Yesterday DVD's. Jaw dropping, life changing moments smile

Re: How did you discover Joe?

My husband started listening to Joe in 2010 oR so from jOE'S show on Sirius.  Early last year I gave him tickets to see joe  and after this live performance my bona-addiction began. Saw him again in St. Louis in November.  Have a meet and greet set for Louisville show.  Own all CDs but two.  Thus and addiction was born.

Re: How did you discover Joe?

We discovered Joe just last year in March. My husband was flipping channels and we came across the RAH show on PBS. We just sat there amazed and wondered why the hell we didn't know anything about this guy. I guess we had been living under a rock or something. I bought the RAH cd the next day. When it arrived I listened to it loud, all by myself and I must admit it felt somewhat like this mystical experience. All I could think of is this is what I had been searching for, and the weird thing is I didn't even know I had been searching for something. Needless to say, I now own all of Joe's cds.
Back before we had kids we used to go see music all the time. My husband was a deadhead when I met him, so we used to travel around the country to see shows. Then childrearing took over our life and the concert going ground to a halt. Now we are beginning to experience the empty nest syndrome and it is so wonderful to have discovered Joe right at this time in our lives. It feels as though we have recaptured our youth. It is so wonderful to have discovered this amazing musician who not only provides us with countless cds and DVDs but who also tours and therefore gives us the opportunity to travel to wonderful places to hear him play. Thanks, Joe!

I liked that sentence, "All I could think of is this is what I had been searching for..."  perfect way to describe it.  NAIL ON THE HEAD!!!!!!!!!!

I believe it was an open mic night in Kansas City MO at the old Grand Emporium! Back when he released the New Day Yesterday Album. Been a huge fan every since.

Thanks, Josh

Re: How did you discover Joe?

Like many others on here, my first exposure was hearing bits and pieces of RAH on our PBS station, less than 2 years ago.  Every time it was on I'd listen longer and longer.  By the time I realized I was hooked, there was only one more airing scheduled, on a Saturday morning at 4 a.m.  Not trusting my VCR setting skills (yes, VCR...), I set the alarm to get up and push "Record".  Had planned to go back to sleep but just couldn't stand to miss listening yet again.  Was mad I had to keep the volume down to avoid disturbing the apartment neighbors.

A few months later saw Joe in concert, bought the RAH dvds and have watched them seems like hundreds of times.  Have since got almost all his other DVDs and cds.  Joe's music came along at a perfect time for me, got me through some rough times.  Joe is the best thing that has happened to me in a long time!   :ch

Re: How did you discover Joe?

Bit of a dull story but I was, as many gear geeks do, surfing the net and YouTube researching my yet-to-be purchased 1st Les Paul and came across the sessions he did for guitar centre talking through his rig. First time I had heard a player talk with such wit and intelligence, and then I was blown away by his playing. So articulate and precise with so much beautiful phrasing. The passion he has for the blues really shone through.  His love of British blues did it for me! Through him I discovered a whole era of music I had bypassed (John Mayalls EC and PG albums, buddy guy, muddy waters etc etc) as well as JBs own fine catalogue. Have now seen him twice and my playing has been given the shot in the arm it needed. Tomorrow I even plan on trying to blend two amps - hopefully without blowing myself to anyone else up.
Ps love this forum - seems like a great bunch on here.

Tallan Noble Latz cited JB as one of his favorites on AGT, along with the more obvious greats. After a bit of Bonawho? and Google-Fu the Bonaddiction took hold.

Re: How did you discover Joe?

Saw his name being tossed around a bit in the Blues publications...then intended to see him in Portland at the  "Waterfront Blues festival", but was unable to make show....but saw him at Rogue Theater in Grants Pass...this was around the You and Me going into Sloe Gin album...and he was INCREDIBLE!!!....Started with "Cradle Rock" and ended with "Asking Around for You"....Mesmerized....mouth agape....looked at my friend Kent...his mouth wide open jaw dropped.....All people to my right and left mouths open....many, but not all seeing him for the first time....and realizing that he had remained hidden somehow from my radar for the first 5-6 years of his career....How'd that happen ?? A night I will not soon forget...I've seen Joe around 10 or so times now, and all his shows are great.....but every so often the show is like an "event"....it has something to do with the artist/audience mix and the particular feeling of the show that night.....Out of all the shows I've seen....3 stand out as particularly because the whole audience seemed moved as a whole. As if we got to share in the secret that many people have yet to discover...as it took me a while to discover....I'm sure other Joe fans have had a similer experience....eh?

Re: How did you discover Joe?

I saw him playing on the back of a flatbed trailer truck after the NASCAR race in New Hampshire in September, 2004.  Only 3 songs but that was enough.

Has it changed my life?  Well, the answer to that is I am typing this while sitting in a London kitchen staying with a friend (who I met because of Joe's music) for a bit after attending 3 of the London shows last week.

Re: How did you discover Joe?

I first saw Joe on CBS Saturday Morning show in their Second Cup muscial feature.  It was 2001, I believe.  He only had 2 albums out at that time, but they were enough.

I chuckle a bit about myself as one of those CDs also included a new technology of a DVD.  Joe's New Day Yesterday Live.  I did not own a DVD player and forgot about that disk for several years.  Then a buddy mentioned the concert.  I pulled out the old CD case and sure enough, there was the DVD.  And wow, what an experience to watch that DVD.  Just blew me away.  Its one thing to hear Joe play.  But to watch, is a whole other level.

I've got every release since then.  Been to several shows.  And am enjoying Vienna as I write this.

Re: How did you discover Joe?

I bought a copy of Guitar Player magazine back in late 2006 or sometime in 2007. It was titled "The Pentatonic Issue". It had Eric Johnson on the cover as well as a Dunlop Jazz III pick. Buried in there was a mini blues pentatonic lesson with a very long-haired Joe Bonamassa. I thought the tab for his licks looked cool so I went and bought his most recent album, which was "You & Me". 5 seconds into "High Water Everywhere" I turned around and went back to the record store to buy "Had to Cry Today". He single-handedly convinced me that having just one Les Paul wasn't enough!!

Re: How did you discover Joe?

I "discovered" joe in 2004. Here is a post I made on January 3, 2008, which explains some of the additional emotion behind my discovery:

"On December 3rd of 2004, a great friend of mine called me at 4:30PM with a spare ticket for a musician I had never heard of before. The show was at 7:30PM that night.
Mark proceeded to give me 10 minutes of glowing reports of Joe Bonamassa. As luck would have it, I was available that evening...an evening that changed my life forever and for the better. I have seen an even 20 shows, counting that first one. I have listened and watched countless hours of Joe's albums, tapes of live shows and dvd's.
I have made many friends who share the same passion that I do.
Mark will always hold a special place in my heart because he gave me the gift of Joe.
Mark died today after a recurrence of cancer and complications from a November bone marrow transplant. He never made it out of the hospital.
We fished together, we golfed together and we shared a love of great music.
He was a true friend and will be sorely missed.
Please say a prayer for his wife and family."

Today,April 3, 2013 I can't help wonder how pleased Mark would be to see where Joe's career has gone. He knew way back then how special Joe was...and I knew it after the first song I heard.
