This is a live recording from Rome in the early 80's and features Steve Vai and FZ soloing. A classic!

Pretty much agree though I think the solos on "Cozmik Debris" and "Uncle Remus", while very short, are melodic gems. The outro from UR is great too.  "Orange County Lumber Truck" has also always been a favorite, though a bit more experimental.

Couldn't agree more. Some of it requires a higher level of study, but ALL of it is truely original, including many passages thought to be impossible to recreate. Dweezil does a great job with his dad's legacy.

I hate to disagree but I've always found Zappa to be sneering, deeply empty, and toe-curlingly pretentious.

Thats a fairly typical reaction from those who don't grasp conceptual continuity.  wink

JK. Taste is taste, no need to apolgize. Hell, some people find the recently passed Elliot Carter pretentious and complex for the sake of complexity. It takes a music appreciation course to fully understand Carter or Zappa.

I agree about DZ, but if you havent listened/seen the Grandmothers, Robbie Seahag Mangano is absolutely amazing. Not only does he totally own Zappa's guitar solos, he's been hired by several Zappa tribute bands to teach them the bass parts, because they couldnt figure them out on their own.

And you can say you saw "it" here first when I have a very special announcement for Zappologists. Still waiting for lawyer's to get out of the way!

I don't think he's empty, but I think he could be sneering and pretentious. But that's because he only gave a lick for what HE was doing at the time. Zappa always appeared to be on the cutting edge, and screw everyone else. That's sort of intriguing to me. Especially if the music is good.
