Topic: Joe's black 74 Custom

Hi there, I'm guessing this would be the right place to ask this.

Was this actually Joe's Custom that was for sale on the bay?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/GIBSON-Les-Paul … 4d05043d6d

Can anybody here verify it?

Thanks

I was looking at this and I asked the seller to provide confirmation in writing and they could not supply. You need some piece of paper to verify if you are going to sell it as Joe's. At least I would unless of course you know the seller.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing.  No paper, no deal.  I know a GT belonged to Joe sold last year sometime but it had paperwork stating so.

Re: Joe's black 74 Custom

Plus it was a factory 2nd.....it had a large "2" under the serial number......

Copy/paste the link to the photobucket image with spaces before and after the insert here. That should do it. Preview the post and see if the link shows in BLUE before posting. If it does, then it will work.

Wow.... And it was a Factory 2nd and had a nice large crack on the top of the body ...seems like 4800 was a lot of money for that one !

Re: Joe's black 74 Custom

Hi folks.
Sorry for the delay in writing but had to get my ducks in a row. I was having morning coffee and with my wife at my side was browsing for what would become my first Les Paul. Saw that post and was stunned like everyone at the listing. I guess just before and after Cindyiron spoke to the seller I talked with them and to the owner regarding the JB reference. Like you guys figured out the sale went down with no authentication based on the instrument value cracks and all. Bought it offline for a very reasonable price, joined your forum but waited to get it and have it inspected by a pro before speaking up.

Was it Joe's? I can say with certainty maybe so and maybe no. If that changes I'll speak up again. I have asked him in a message that may or may not find him since I dont know how anyone could send JB a message but I hope to get a reply somehow. It will be played will not be glass cased but it would be nice to know the history of the LPC. Thus I am waiting for Gibson likewise to provide their info on file for the guitar. Nice of them to do this I thought.

I absolutely do (as the name implies) love my (first) LPC and it was setup low and fast and has a great tone. I am travelling today but when I get time I will share more info and photos. I am honored to be in a forum with such knowledgable guitarists and JB fans.

Thought I would share that much info... Its a great guitar that found a great home for a good price.

Re: Joe's black 74 Custom

Welcome, if it's a player then that's fine and enjoy. Get Joe to sign it when he's near you. big_smile

Come on the Blades (sorry Idolbone just had to borrow your line)

Re: Joe's black 74 Custom

Thanks for that, Mr Smith. It's a fine guitar and already has improved my playing. I have a lot to learn but it's the journey that I enjoy. I think that I saw some posts where one of you folks actually built a LPC wow. I imagine some of you have aleady had the pleasure of seeing JB perform. I can't wait to do that...

Seeing is believing and both my wife and I came to know and love his music through the concert in your homeland at Prince Albert. I was overseas and the wife taped it as a surprise ao that I could watch Eric Clapton perform... I was blown away to see Eric appear on the same stage where I think Cream did thier Farewell performance?

Anyhow I watched Joe strap on a Les Paul and asked her who is this guy???  Within half the intro for Django she and I realized it was Rock history that we were watching. I had no idea how impressed that we would continue to be with each bit we learned about him, his life and with each JP performance and recording we came upon. I wore out my little Korean guitar saved some bucks and had her support to replace it and now you know the rest of the story.

If it doesnt mean a risk of missing a concert I'd love to have him sign the LPC - how would I go about that?

Now anyone please tell me  what kinda small amp would you suggest just for jamming at home?

Cheers!

Hi, Ken.  Congrats on the LPC.  As for the "small amp," I really like my Marshall Class 5, but whether it will suit you will depend on how loud you're allowed to get while "jamming at home"...   wink

Thanks - love the photo of you and Joe. He said playing with Eric Clapton was the coolest think he'd ever done and I bet meeting him ranks up there for you, Coach.
I had someone else suggest the Class 5 and - get this - she says that I can play as loud as I want too --- Hmmm Careful what you wish for!!!!

It does, indeed!  That particular guitar is very special to me because it's the model Joe was playing for the first encore at the RAH show, which was the moment that changed me from fan to fanatic.  If you do a little poking around, you'll probably find the thread where I told the story of that meeting, and how I was so nervous I forgot to ask him to sign the guitar...   wink

One more thing to like about the Class 5:  I have found it to be be very pedal-friendly.  I'm hoping to pick up one of the limited-edition red ones some day to put together with my black one for a poor man's wet/dry set-up...

I'm nothing if not true to my word. This has been a dead thread so I'm whispering at shadows but I said I would reply later to inform anyone that happens to read the thread so here it is...

I stated my case soon after the last post in a request to Joe's marketing manager. To my delight she answered me straight away. I asked for a response from Joe to help me determine whether he had owned the instrument and what might be the other history (where did he get it?)

I made direct contact with her, then at her request submitted detailed messages with photos, and some great evidence that the guitar was the one seen in videos and photos with Joe (some included in this thread and others that are not mentioned here). At first, I was encouraged that he was incredibly busy, but would handle the request when he got a round to it.

After many months, it became evident that either the message never got to Joe or he just wasn't interested in the issue. I have to admit that maybe I had high hopes, and I am a little disappointed. But - I really enjoy playing it when I'm not working overseas. It's kind of a mystery - where did it live all this time since 1974?

Since it was (((((POSSIBLY)))) associated with the intro of BCC in their first live performance, and after some news releases I stumbled on last week - I think any hope of Joe endorsing his association with the instrument is unlikely. Seems he parted ways with that chapter (IMHO a GREAT THING)

Thus, with a heavy heart, I report that while many of us had hopes that this Les Paul was associated with Joe, I think it will remain an unsolved mystery. Will I get him to sign it if I have the chance? Heck yes! Will I ask him about it if I get that chance? Yup. Will I get an answer? Therein the question lies.

Been real, been fun, just not a happy ending. (Yet.) Time to play some blues, and remember how awesome that guitar sounds. Cheers, everyone!
