Topic: Ted Nugent

Saw Ted in Atlanta last night, the city is in ruins today. I do believe Nuge is the best rock guitarist I have ever seen. I've seen a lot. He induces sounds from that Byrdland that no white man should be capable of. Amazing. His band, OMG, I have never heard such a hard rocking band groove with the Motown roots as  heard last night. it's killer rock, but it's roots lay in Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Muddy Waters, and James Brown. I do beleive they are the Funk Brothers of our generation. I won't even try to describe their version of " I Can't Quit You Baby". Catch them while you can, there are only 2 dates left o this years tour.

Re: Ted Nugent

He runs two Peavey 5150s 120w on full...that is every single dial on the OD channel on 10...plus a Kustom 2x12.
Was it loud down the front?

Nuge is Marmite to most.

Re: Ted Nugent

I remember seeing Sweaty Teddy in the 70's at Soldier Field on the Chicago Lakefront.  One of those all day shows.  It was blistering hot and people were using gallon water jugs to basically have a massive waterfight and avoid heat prostration during the various acts.  One of the earlier acts (I forget who) voiced concern about water (and some errant open jugs) ending up on stage.  Rightly so, with all the electrical connections and instruments to be worried about zapping--either equipment and or band members....

Not Ted.  When he got out front and started his show, people were tossing water jugs up in the air (as they had been all day).  Ted made some sort of reference along the lines of "bring it on".  And the jugs started heading towards the stage.  I recall him just wading around through them cranking away, and kicking them around, and back into the crowd.  No holding that man back.

Play like you've worked at it, and don't worry about sounding like your influences.  You can't cheat on them, or your practice, anyway.  If you've worked hard at your skill, your audience will know it.

Ted never holds anything back!  Bring it on seems to be his watchword. Wish he'd get out near here more.

Had tix to see him open for Skynyrd on the "Redneck Riviera", Konocti Harbor Resort up here on Clearlake. Unfortunately Leon Wilkeson passed away days before the show and it was canceled. Too good to be true, Skynyrd & Nuge.

Derek St. Holmes is on this tour and sounds as good as ever.  Of course Derek is THE classic Nugent vocalist.

Gawd such memories...The Amboy Dukes (or TN&The Amboy Dukes, it is way too long ago for details) opening for Mitch Ryder. Ted was a guitar beast, and I cant believe I havent seen him again in <cough cough>40 years. "Journey to the Center of the Mind", "Psychotic Reaction" (Count Five) and "Hush" (DP) were three very important songs in my downward spiral lol.

Wow, knowing the history story already, I am glad to hear from someone from way back there!  Let me pat your back to help the cough tongue !  Cal Jam II, 1978...

I have to agree that Derek (ahem) St. Holmes was THE best vocalist for Ted.  I can listen to that first Ted Nugent album again and again...

I read a bio on Ted,and if I recall it wa written that Ted pretty much booted Derek out as an ego thing to sing all the songs.I agree Derricks a better vocalist. But Teds got the stage presence!

Did I miss your review or video if you took any?  Interested in how well latter dates have come off.  Was Derek in the band that night?

...stage presence which comes off a little thin ( and scrawny, like Ted lol ) without the better vocal and lesser (but really good) guitar...in my opinions...I would love to have seen them back in about '74 ish with the Midwest barnstorming they were doing then...

Love Derek St. Holmes.  Glad to see he is back with him on this tour and hopefully future tours smile

I actually like Ted Nugent as a complimentary vocalist.  I like when he adds a little something to the song.  I loved Damn Yankees and liked how they switched out vocals depending on song.

"Holy Toledo"  -  Bill King   "Just Win Baby" - Al Davis  "The Autumn Wind" - Steve Sabol

Re: Ted Nugent

Yes Derrick St. Holmes was there and played just about every Gibson model made. Ted is really sticking up for Gibson and in return they are showering the band with Gibbies. Wild Mick Brown from former Dokken fame played the drums, and Greg Smith played bass. The band was fricken tighter than any I have ever heard. Teds knees are killing him so he wasn't very mobile, but he killed them old Byrdlands and OMG they sound awesome, particularly the blonde Bryd he opened with is the bomb. They did a bring the house down version of Willie Dixons "I can't quit you Baby", that melted the place, word, Ted Nugent can play the blues, they are the blackest bunch of white musicians on the planet, Motown runs through their veins.

At one point some fool thought it would be funny to chunk a cup of ice on the stage, that was a mistake, Ted came unglued, and a tyrade of MF's were unleashed on him.
In one rant about the Gibson raid he came down haard on the US Wildlife folks for raiding Gibson, told the local Atlanta cops if they came after his Gibsons to taze the MF's. Classic Ted. His attitude is still as it was in the 70's only he has had 35 years to perfect his delivery.

He has two more shows on this tour, The Great White Buffalo 2012, tonite at the Hardrock in Boloxi, Ms and the last one in Texas. Then he is gonna prepare for the unting season, and have knee replacement surgery on both knees. Guess jumping off them massive stacks of Fender amps back in the day has taken it's toll. God Bless Ted Nugent and God Bless America....

Were they Loud? Compared to Joe ,yes, but nothing like he was back in the 70's.

That was the classic lineup for sure with Derek on vocals and guitar. While I'm a fan of power trios I think I liked Ted's sound better when he had a 2nd guitarist. I also really liked Free For All with Meatloaf on vocals - great album!
