Topic: Grandmothers of Invention
Last show of the tour and it was tons of fun.
3 Mothers alum, Naploeon Murphy Brock, Tom Fowler and Don Preston, plus an amazing guitar player Robbie "Seahag" Mangano, and great drummer Chris Garcia.
This is a leaner lineup than ZPZ, but Don Preston makes up for it with great synth work, and Chris Garcia sounds like 2 drummers and percussion all by himself. Preston at 80 years old sounds like just like he did in the 70s, and Fowler doesnt stop playing the entire show.
Its impossible (and probably irrelevant) to compare Mangano and Dweezil Zappa, so I wont. I think theyre both great at recreating Frank's sound (Mangano's tone may be closer to FZ than Dweezil's), and would love to hear them together.
NMBrock said they are trying to get more of the early members together for the next tour, and I'd love to see it happen. He spent 15 or 20 minutes talking with us at the meet and greet (much to the dismay of the people waiting behind us!), mostly his philosophy of life and nutrition, and how he keeps going at nearly 70: Fruits (19 ingredient smoothies every breakfast), veggies (cauliflower and broccoli every day), little alcohol (vocal chords rinsed with a vinegar and honey combo), and sex at least 3 times a week (sorry no more details)!
