That's a tough question ... I really like Small Change, which is really old ... his sound and style can change a lot from cd to cd ... also like The Heart of Saturday Night ... personally like Alice (it's rather dark, but then a lot of his music is) ... let me think a bit more and I'll get back to you.
Sorry to say I haven't seen SUHL here in a while. This is a perfect question for him.
Call out to Suhl, someone needs your help.
Small change is worth the price of purchase for The Piano Has Been Drinking, alone. Classic Waits.

Tom Waits :
Radical style and not too easy listening. One has to be in a certain mood to listen to Tom Waits. And each album is different style.
Can't say that I really found my way to like the music. I like certain songs. But certainly it's not the intention of Tom Waits to make it listeners too easy.
Lester, upon further reflection, other Waits cds I really like are Rain Dogs, Swordfishtrombones, Bone Marchine and Blood Money.
All his cds vary so much. I would recommend listening to a few songs to see what you like. I started with Small Change, fell in love with Tom Traubert's Blues, and from 1976 on couldn't get enough of Tom Waits. I'm one of those who like just about everything he does.
Hope you enjoy him as much as I do.
Thanks for all your comments.
Lester.
