Re: Good alternatives to the EV12L....?
I think I remember Joe saying that G12-65s "work in a pinch" - I personally use 2 of the Warehouse-Guitar-Speaker clones with my Jubilee and it sounds fantastic.

just remember if the wattage of the speaker is "too" close to the amp's wattage you will blow the speaker.
That's why Joe uses 2 - 300w speakers per head since a 100w tube amp in full clipping should be close to 200w out put.
if you've got a 20w amp clean and it puts out 35w dirty, why would you use a 25w green back speaker in the cab?
same thing goes for a 50w amp running clean, its got to be more than 75w dirty, a 65w amp won't like it too much
just my thoughts on this
Yeah, it is the one gear-related bit that JB really brought home for me. I currently run my orange rocker 30 (30 watts) into an Emminence Big Ben 15in. I like the portability of a single speaker and the 15 projects much better than a 12in. It is also rated at 225W. You hear the amp working, don't lose yourself on stage, and you can hear every note clearly. The downside is that you really need to crank your master volume (or just volume if you have a NM-volume amp) to get where you need to be for sustain and working the volume knob to control dynamics; this means you have to play louder, by quite a bit, hence baffles for live and rehearsal, and an attenuator for home use :-) good discussion!
I use a 100w Soldano with a 4X12 loaded with EVM12L Classics (200w) each for a total of 800w cabinet load.
Before that i was using the WGS ET65's and man what a difference in tones did the EV's make.
It was like lifting a blanket off the cabinet. And i love how much head room the EV's have and i run my masters between 5-7 and still have plenty of volume to spare.
PS, the Emmi Delta Pro (400w) speakers don't sound like the EVM's. They don't have the top end clarity and to me sound more like a PA speaker or for Bass guitar.
Half the price for Eminence Delta? Whaaaa...
I will have to get at least one to try!
Coolaxeman wrote:The reason for this is I am using the cab in stereo with a 55W head into one side, but my DCL100 into the other side. Clearly, with the 1936 speakers rated at 75W, one side is underpowered and needs an upgrade to ensure clarity.
If that 55W is a tube amp I'm pretty sure you'll fry the Celestion 75W within a couple of weeks. If you want enough headroom from your speaker, I'd look at another Marshall 2x12 for the DSL.
It's interesting you should say that - it is a tube amp, but I thought the Celestion 75W would be OK with 55w clean. Seems fine at the moment but I'm not to playing at ear bleed volume to be fair. However, I have been undecided on whether it would be better to uprate that speaker too. Perhaps two Eminence Delta Pro's (can't afford the EV's unfortunately but they would be perfect though!). When I play larger gigs I will use two 2x12" cabs - one for each amp, however I really like the option for the medium to smaller gigs of having a single cab that I can put two amps through as it cuts down on gear to lug around.

I use nothing but Eminence speakers. Every time I tried celestions, or other brands I was left underwhelmed.
From memory Jenson Neo 12's are another sensibly priced, high output, flat response speaker with the added benefit of low weight too (couple of kilo's each) ..but like the Delta Pro's they roll off way before the treble peak of the EVM's ..they were on my shopping list last time around
Cheers Dave will check them out!!
