Re: Marshall Class 5 and 1 watt amps

I guess it depends on if it is a roadie carrying your stuff around or you.  I know if its me taking my stuff to a gig I take good care of my stuff because I can't afford to replace it if I do break it.  I doubt most people would take a 5 watt amp to a gig though.  Unless you mic it.  Even then I bet your dealing with no head room.  Most people I know use too much distortion anyway.

I hear Bugera (Behringer) can sound good, but not "road worthy" or heavy duty/durable. Good for bedroom or living room situations!

That probably could be true. I don't use it for anything but sitting in my living room an playing which sounds like what the original poster is looking for.
I use my 2204 with a 4x12 for gigging

I have also just built a Champ (5F1) style amp from a kit this is much quieter (and cheaper) - partly because it runs through an 8 inch speaker.

I just read your full amp build thread. Thats awesome. How does your amp sound?

Really pleased with it. The whole thing cost less than £180 and it took me three half days to build. It has that real fender champ tone and touch sensitivity. I am planning on building a pine cabinet for it because it really deserves more than the MDF cab - it will still not look like a 57 champ - my plan is to make something that has the shape of the matchless spitfire.

I had no real electronics experience to speak of before the build.

Re: Marshall Class 5 and 1 watt amps

Another Class 5 owner here...I love em! Great sound around the 5/6 volume mark...I've done a few low key gigs with 2 of these babies, and they cut through amazingly! Insane for such a small amp.

I think Im going to follow your route. I have been looking at kits and just need to choose one. I played a Class 5 today and the tone was awesome. I also played the JMP-1c and was amazed by its classic rock tones... and the price!

Re: Marshall Class 5 and 1 watt amps

Building a small amp is good fun and really not that hard. Most 5w kits seem to be champs or modified champ style amps with either a couple more controls or a more British voicing. Typically for british voicing these run an el84 power tube like the class 5 and ac4.

Re: Marshall Class 5 and 1 watt amps

Has anyone looked into or have used the H&K TubeMeister 18? If you have used it, what do you think of it?

I played one at the weekend and really liked it. It has DI out which is awesome. It did a whole range of tones from a good marshall crunch to even heavier drive tones. I got a great classic rock ac dc tone from it. It also did awesome clean tones. It also has a switch to change  the wattage between 15, 5 and 1 watts great for recording.

Re: Marshall Class 5 and 1 watt amps

I really couldn't make up my mind in the end so I bought an interim Amp until i can build my own or decide what to get.. I bought a Yamaha THR 5 which is about the size of a lunch box and suprisingly it has great tones in its little dual 5 inch speaker frame.

Re: Marshall Class 5 and 1 watt amps

I like the Marshall Class 5. You can crank it on the 1 watt mode and get a great sound for home practice, and then you can switch it to the 5 watt mode for rehearsals and gigs. Great little amp with big sound.

Re: Marshall Class 5 and 1 watt amps

Hey forgive me for crashing your thread but question ,the class 5 is anawesome little amp, goes back to the days of old,(ya thats where I'm from)  I love this amp but I really miss a really good reverb. Does anyone one have a line on a good way to get a really good verb going ? I have heard that Holy Grail has a good verb but has anyone used one. Any ideas would be alot of help. Thanks

I absolutely love the class 5 series amps, collected 4 of them. I have used and use a rack mounted reverb in front of one (in my small stereo gigging rig) with great results as well as a digitech effects pedal verb and even the line6 m9 reverb with excellent results. I would like to get my hands on a electro harmonix cathedral pedal as I hear they are fantastic in the front of amps. Personally I like a bit of a darker reverb sound and it suits this amp well.

Re: Marshall Class 5 and 1 watt amps

The WET is a great reverb pedal. Also like the Hall of Fame.

Re: Marshall Class 5 and 1 watt amps

It's not the trendy pick, but I've been quite pleased with my humble little Boss RV-5 with my Class 5.  I figured if it's good enough for Joe...   wink

Re: Marshall Class 5 and 1 watt amps

I bought a second hand EH Cathedral reverb a while and its an amazing pedal. I am really happy with it. THe number of options it gives you is awesome and it only costs a bit more than the boss RV-5
