Topic: Ian Parker

Already said in another thread, Ian is working on a “solo” album for summer release and things are sounding very good. His latest blogs says there’s enough material for 2 albums and he’s having a break from recording while they’re laying down cello parts….Hmm, that’s going to sound very classy…

Anyway, he’s getting out on the road with his stuff, including a Germany visit as well as some more Dylan Tribute shows that he did in Spain in February. Always worth getting along to one of Ian’s shows….

Re: Ian Parker

Yes, and I will second that. Hamburg and Braunschweig are pretty equidistant so I'll do them both.

Always a very relaxed and upilfting evening with Ian. Whilst he may have changed his style somewhat now I'm sure he'll revisit the Blues again at some point.

What is important is to enjoy what he does now. Superb singer/songwriting, beautifully played and sung. Such an engaging bloke too. I always get the chance to have a long natter with him when he is here. Its like meeting a mate after bit of a break.

If you are ANYWHERE near one of his concerts please do go and support him, you will enjoy it and he WILL appreciate it.

Re: Ian Parker

I'll try to do one or other of the North Yorkshire dates at the end of this month. Both are great little venues set in some superb countryside which will make the evening that bit more special.

I agree entirely with your comments about Ian; as a singer/songwriter he's up there with the best, just a lot of people don't know it yet. Great guy to meet after the gig (which "blues" guy isn't?), always up for a chat, warm, friendly etc.

Ian just finished his German tour and the gig in Antwerpen (Belgium). I attended his solo acoustic gig in Muddy`s Club, Weinheim. Epic, couldn`t be better! His music went to the hearts and souls! Extraordinary voice and wonderful playing, partly moving with his body. There was older stuff, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix and Leonard Cohan covers and actually material from his latest CD "The Bare Bones". A must have for each guitar lover besides our Joe! Catch him if you can. This Thursday(20 09) he will be the opener for Roachford in Wolverhampton(!!!) in the Robin 2. I attended in  April Roachford´s concert in the Musiktheater Rex in Lorsch/Germany. Hot music which I totally enjoyed with a lot of rhythm which keeps you dancing. ***** recommanded!

Re: Ian Parker

Don’t know if there’s any particular reason to it; maybe he’s been energised by thoughts and rehersals for the forthcoming special show at the Robin later this month, but word is out that there’s at least one Ian Parker Band gig next year.

Nothing as yet as who’s in the band line-up; though pretty certain Morg will be on keys; and there’s nothing yet on Ian’s website about tour schedule for 2013, so its a case of “watch this space”. Got me excited as I’ve not yet seen Ian Parker in Band formation apart from DVD.

Re: Ian Parker

After my dates mix up back in Feb, made sure on Saturday I got the date and venue right to catch Ian and his old/new or new/old band, and as a mate put it, “with a proper guitar in his hands”.

So, a trip down to Guisborough, on the hottest night of the year so far; and the music inside was even hotter. Backing Ian, Morg Morgan as ever on keys/ backing vocals, Dave Jenkins on bass & vocals, Al Cornell on drums - a tight team.

Ian opened with Misfits & Fools, so it was obvious, he was picking up from where he left off from his acoustic sojourn and he meant business. Split over 2 sets, we were treated to the very “cream” of Ian’s back-catalogue - “cream” being the operative word when he invited his old mate Dave to handle the vocals for a searing cover of Tales Of Brave Ulysses as they did when they were starting out in the Midlands. Don’t Hold Back, Told My Girl To Go Away and a room-shaking Muddy Waters’ She’s Alright made the first half of the night.

Second set, and Ian & the guys were clearly enjoying themselves, Ian and Morg perfect foils for each other. Ian seems to have got the singer/songwriter mostly out of his system and is back working on a more Blues album and treated us to a new song - Truth on the Resonator as well as a take on Dylan’s All Along The Watchtower in recognition of a Dylan based project he worked on in Spain. Closing the set, Ian slipped into “hippy-mode” for CSN&Y’s Almost Cut My Hair tied with Mac’s Green Manalishi.

Pushed for time, we got one encore - but what an encore. I’m not the biggest Hendrix fan, but certain guys “own” certain Hendrix covers, and as far as Little Wing goes, that’s Ian’s: the inflection in his voice, the way every note from the guitar just melted; truly one of those time-stand-still moments.

In all, might not have been the loudest or bounciest of gigs at Guisborough, but I can’t recall one there with such sheer class. I can’t really blame people for staying out and enjoying a rare, fine summer’s evening, but a band of this quality and a guy of Ian’s calibre deserves a bigger audience than the 40 or so who turned out on Saturday.
