Re: I'm leaning more and more towards modellers instead of amps...

I have owned a lot of Line6 stuff.Too much fun and got in the way of playing... I ended up looking at it like it's a toy. All I do with it is turn knobs and experiment... never really "just played."

Re: I'm leaning more and more towards modellers instead of amps...

I played out around places with open mic nights for bands and on any given night you can find me jamming through a line 6, a fender, a marshall, or a vox.  Not the high end stuff either.  I guess my point is just because I didn't blow $3000 on a "Tool" or anything for that matter since the amps are at the gig already I have to rely on the old saying "Tone is in your hands" because if I did have to spend a load of cash I'd be screwed!  Less is more to me on amps.  Just give me a 15 watt amp, a mic, and a decent guitar and I'll be fine. smile

Amen to that...the less knobs the better...I once read an interview in Guitarist magazine with some guy (can't remember name or band, 'twas a while ago...) who said that if your amp has more than six knobs on it, then chances are you are one (not that I'm calling anyone a knob, I just thought it was a good quote big_smile )...damn, my Hot Rod Deluxe has more than six...but I know what he means, sometimes you can spend too long fiddling about rather than just coaxing the tone from the guitar controls and the amp...that's why I sold most of my pedals, they were great to play around with but never really got used hmm

That said, if you are in the mood for playing around, or have some time to kill in a guitar store, modelling amps are great fun smile

Re: I'm leaning more and more towards modellers instead of amps...

The biggest thing that I thought modellers in general fail to reproduce is very light breakup that Tube amps do so well.  I have my amps set to that volume when I play and I boost them with od pedals.  So with Modellers I'd have to change my style.

Ron,
I was curious when you record the nice tube amps vs the Axe Fx 1 or New one... other than tube amps are better are there any benefits to the Axe.  I thought the consistancy would be better at least.

Didnt mean to sound so bitchy with the last post... I reread it and I could have been less of a douche. My Bad.

Hi
Like I mentioned for quick ideas to capture during recording to quickly get the tone they are great. But for me  nothing comes close to the feel at the end of your fingers pluged into a good tube amp set to breath the marvelous tone. Exspecially when you roll down the volume. At the end of the day the feel, tone that one seeks is in the ears of the listener so it is my opion what works for you may not work for me. That is what is so great about guitar, if I play something and you play the same thing it will sound different. How cool is that! This enables us all to express what is dwelling deep within us. We all bring something to the guitar when we pick it up. That is what is sooooo great about guitar. For me my holy grail is my Twinkleland and my Carol Ann JB-100 s/n 001 that I am sooo lucky to have.
Cheers Ron

Re: I'm leaning more and more towards modellers instead of amps...

I see both sides of the coin here. For me, I've played using some "modeling" tech stuff and from a playing standpoint, it sounded great but didn't quite have the 'feel' of a tube amp..none the less, it still sounded great.

I also agree that if I were to see someone play and even if they had a wall of dummy cabinets and amps on stage but were using a processor, and it sounded good, I wouldn't know the difference. Even if you played me a recording, and it sounded good, I wouldn't know if it had been digitally processed or came straight from an amp.

Unless you're one of those guys who goes from the guitar straight into your amp, you're adding some processing along the way in one form or another. I see nothing wrong with using modeling technology if its more convenient, more affordable, or its what sounds best to you, the player. Because I think the differences will only be recognizable to whomever is playing, not so much the audience who will not be afforded the ability to compare and contrast when listening.
