Re: Vietnam in HD...

Hey Bluesman- I started watching the series last night and found it both fascinating as well as disturbing. I served from '73 to '76 and was surrounded by many fellow soldiers who had been in country. I was fortunate to be stationed in Germany for my tour, but in the back of my mind was always the possibility of being sent over as I was a medic assigned to a mechanised infantry unit. They were scary and exciting times to be sure. I'm going to try and see the rest of the series as much as my head can take it. Watching movies like "Saving Private Ryan" and believe it or not, "Forrest Gump" have the same effect on me also.

Why don't we eliminate all the warning labels and let things sort themselves out?

Re: Vietnam in HD...

I'll check it out. I served in the theater 67-69. Fortunately offshore where bullets weren't flying, helping deliver an endless stream of ordnance from an aircraft carrier. Many nights I watched the flashes from ammo and firefights on the beach and thought of the men there, and how lucky I was to be where I was.

Re: Vietnam in HD...

My son and I are watching it. God bless all of you that have served.

Re: Vietnam in HD...

I watched the first three in utter amazement earlier this week sitting in a motel room in BFE Texas.  I was 2 years old when it started and 13 when it ended so never really understood alot about it.  There's been lots of great historical documentaries on WWII, but this is really the first one I've seen on Nam and i think it's done quite well.  I'll defiantely catch the last three sometime if they run them again.  Looks live DVR time if I can find them on the TV schedule.

You're welcome Tres. The only reason I didn't go was because I received a high draft number. I'll never forget the day I went to my friend's home to pick him up. He met me at the door and asked, "Guess what they're doing today?" I had no clue so I asked, "What?". He told me they were drawing our draft numbers to see who goes to Vietnam. As we sat by the TV with his mom, the news station showed the months of the year with the corresponding draft number by date. My birthday is June 3 and then I saw 262 by my date. My friend's birthday was in October and his mom kept saying, "If you get a low draft number, I'm grounding you Michael!" There was quite a bit of relief when his birthday showed 284.

I felt lucky and at the same time a bit guilty, because of the guys who would end up dying over in 'Nam simply because they got the wrong number...it was 1971.

I have and always will support our brave Veterans who have risked and given their lives to serve our Country.

Re: Vietnam in HD...

it was 1971, we must be about the same age. It was the last year of the draft lottery (but we didn't know that) and my birthday came up #345. Parents and I were both relieved. It would not have mattered much, I have strabismus (lazy eye) and they would never have assigned me for duty on the battlefield. I could have been taken for something else, like my dad in the Navy in WW2. He was stationed in Puerto Rico and his main job was flying to various islands to pick up cases of booze for the high ranking officers. lol

Re: Vietnam in HD...

I was living in Hawaii, surfing and knowing I had a low number. Dropped out of college and decided to go have a fling before the axe fell. I got  a call from the folks that the induction letter had arrived so I ran down and enlisted in the Navy. My dad said if you were going off to die for your country, it was better to ride than walk. A sailor always has a dry bunk and hot food, except for the medical corpsmen who were in the foxholes with the Marines. He was right. My children were the first in 7 generations to miss serving, all the way back to the Revolution. I have ancestors who fought on both sides of the Revolution and the Civil War.

Re: Vietnam in HD...

We have not learned.  One of my old pigeons was a SEAL in a loincloth, a Norse Viking psychopath.  I saw a bootleg film taken by a hidden camera in a hidden room in which the poor slimy little guy in the chair filled up his pants and fainted dead away when dài tóc lee walked in the the door.  Kinda wonder about bad or good...

He lived in the montagnard villages with his hair in a top-knot and a souvenir necklace.  He came back stateside with a Vietnamese wife and a long list of very bad habits.  The specials don't tell the whole story.  He came in through San Diego. and fell unconscious through the back door of a mission run by some 12 step guys, covered with blood.

Somehow when he came to, he told Clancy that he had to get to Miami to see Mr. Smith.  Through some very weird Karmic turbulence he was told no you need to see Mr. Jones And he fell to me.  We (he & I) were 2 years putting him back together to some semblance of normalcy.

It was (is) a very personal nightmare and I see it may happen again.  So yes... watch it closely and learn... and maybe pray...

Re: Vietnam in HD...

My husband was very disturbed by some of this footage, another side of the stories which have been so long in coming out ... far too painful to look at even after all these years.

Like you, Rick, KB enlisted in the Navy and served his time on an aircraft carrier rather than in country.

Guido, my brother was a flight surgeon stationed in Germany during those years, in Munich.  Where were you?

It was 20 years post Vietnam before the first movie about it came out and that was almost too soon ... very difficult for me to sit through Platoon and that was only a movie, but it made me feel as if I was there ... almost ... because I know it can't compare to those who were really there.

Bless you BJJ (and all who served) for helping put your friend back together somewhat ... I know many never got put back together and you're right, it is definitely happening again ... watching closely and learning doesn't seem to work ... trying praying.

Last year at the Wall traced my good friend's brother's name for her ... what a loss!  I had shivers there.
