Topic: Opera anyone?

I know this is probably wasted space, but there might be a couple of you out there. We just got back from a live simulcast of the matinee N.Y.Met Opera production of Mozart's Don Giovanni from the Lincoln Center. It will be rebroadcast in a month. The series is broadcast live all over the world to digital big screen theaters, I think 55 countries now. $20 got 3 1/2 hours of fantastic music. One of the best classical music deals around. Check it out if it strikes your fancy. The place was packed. Times and venues can be checked out at http://www.metoperafamily.org/metopera/ … einHD.aspx

Re: Opera anyone?

Actully Jane has a degree in Theater and is a trained opera singer. Her son is currently living in Chicago and working on his Master's degree (I never knew that you could get a MA in opera singing!) He is a VERY good tenor. I have heard some of his demos. Remember this name: Nathan Oakes. He just may be the future Joe Bonamassa of Opera!  big_smile

Major Tom to ground control...

Well knock me over with a feather.  smile  Yes, you can get a degree in just about anything nowadays. I'll be looking for that name. The performance yesterday was a near miraculous comeback by the lead Baritone Mariusz Kwiecien, who injured himself in the dress rehearsal's sword fight and had emergency surgery the same day for a herniated disc. His stand-in had been doing well and there's nothing like pressure...
One cool thing was the theater audience would break out in applause after moving passages and arias(and there were plenty of them) just like it was really live and we were really at the Met.  big_smile

Re: Opera anyone?

My wife and I went to a few operas in Chicago when we lived there (10 years ago).  It was a pretty good time.  Not the kind of music I listen to at home, but it was fun to go and see live (it is a show after all, not just music).  I certainly appreciate what they do.

Re: Opera anyone?

I go to the opera once or twice a year to keep either my friend or my sister-in-law company...in fact I'm going on 23rd November.

Although it is not my usual thing, I enjoy the spectacle and musicianship.

A couple of years ago I saw "Carmina Burana" at the O2 - that was superb. No idea what it was about  roll , but I love the music of that one and actually have it on my iPod...which can be a bit disconcerting when I have it on Shuffle and get Joe B, followed by Rory Gallagher then a bit of Orff!!

Re: Opera anyone?

I used to go to the opera all the time.
I even studied (for a very short time) to be a Mezzo Soprano.

Opera is never wasted space!

Mille Grazie Ricardo for the post!

Re: Opera anyone?

Nice and unexpected responses.  smile  We don't go all the time either, because the cost of attending live local was just getting over the limit at near $200 a pop. This series brings the best in opera and makes it affordable (and I don't have to dress up!). The HD production is very well done and has live interviews backstage before and at intermission. The theater handed out a synopsis of the opera and cast list as we entered. All productions include subtitled translations of the songs and dialog.
