Topic: New Car Day!!

I am so happy.

So, I went to buy an SLK55 AMG roadster today.

Hated it. Leaden, heavy, imprecise. Drinks like Rick Wakeman after a bad day.

I bought this instead. It's like the difference between a heavy 80's Les Paul (SLK) and having a '62 lightweight Strat.

1 owner, fully, fully loaded, 22k miles!!

I love Beetles! I'd love to shove a Beetle shell on a 911 running gear and have the ultimate Q-Car!

Re: New Car Day!!

Lovely car, it was between that and the MX5 Sport when I was looking for a fun car. I chose the MX5 in the end and love it. Hope you have the same result with yours. (The Bose system with 6 cd changer also had a big factor. Lots of room for Joe and BCC). lol  lol  lol

NO!! A-W-E-S-O-M-E.

So chuckable. It's the Tokai Strat of the Car world! Just wish it had 20 more BHP.

Porsche will be great as you can get a guit case in the back seat and a Fender Pro Junior in the front boot (trunk).

Nice! That merc is a gas hog for sure. The Porsche will too if you don't keep the foot out of it,  lol . Tal has a nice merc in LA, Looked like an E350 coupe. Pure sex and silver. How often do you have top down weather over there though? Fast agile cars sure are fun.

I drive in Europe a lot- just come back from Barcelona with the top down all the way to Clermont (900kms)

In the UK, more than you'd think- I have an Audi TT Mk 2 Roadster 3.2 at the mo and had the top off today around London (66 degrees in your old money.)

Re fuel- 911 will do 30mpg all day long at a steady 85mph. The Audi is SHOCKING- 24 mpg at the same, and to comapre my old CLK55AMG, that did more from a 5.5 V8 than the 3.2 Audi. The really big difference is in Germany on the unrestricted autobahns, where the Porker will do 25mpg @ 120mph and 18mpg at 150mph, the Audi will do 16mpg and 9mpg respectively!

Loving the E350's though. The diesel makes a lot of sense in Europe with gas at $10 a gallon. I considered the CLK 320D which is rapid and frugal, but it aint a Porsche. I also have a 09 diesel Freelander 2 which does 38 mpg for gear lugging and dog carrying.....so that's great.

Re: New Car Day!!

That is way  cool . Over here, diesel fuel is more than high test gas. Those high speed Bahns are fun. I remember driving in Italy and being wide open at near 100mph in my rental Fiat on the autostrada and moving over for the fast cars into the slow lane with the trucks going 90.  yikes Oh, and there was a glorious ride up to Monaco with the chief engineer on the ship in his Ferrari Boxer! We came out of a tunnel clipping along listening to the noise reverberate at full song and there was a motorcycle policeman on the side checking for speeders. He gave us a wave and thumbs up. Ferrari's get the free pass in Italy!  big_smile Free and reserved Ferrari parking in front of the casino too.  tongue

Rick- in UK 98 Premium is c.£6.03 ($9.88) a gallon, diesel is £6.39 ($10.47).

Re Italy, I recall driving in in my old CLK55 AMG (which is a seriously quick thing) and as I drove out of the first toll road booth, a 1.1 italian Fiat was already flashing me like fury to getta the hella outta my way-a.!!

I do believe, having driven all over the world, that the Brits and Germans are the best drivers around- us cos of the perm congestion on the freeways and the way we deal with it, the Germans because of their discipline and their high speed skills. I once drove in India. The horn is the only thing you need and driving hierarchy is based totally on size!!

Re: New Car Day!!

see the edit re a drive in Italy. We still have relatively cheap fuel here. Less than half what you are gouged for. Mexico is interesting. The right of way is the rule of overlap, he is right who is ahead.

Re: New Car Day!!

Congrats...you will love it. Those cars are high-performance, yet will start up every day without trouble. Amazingly engineered and unbelievably fun to drive. Just remember to get a trickle-charger if you don't plan to drive it most days. My mechanic says that the biggest mistake Porsche owners make is NOT driving their cars every day (as they are intended), as this causes the engine temps to never get hot enough, long enough to evaporate the moisture that accumulates in the various compartments.
