For the record, i think the guy is cool. His set at High Voltage this summer was a highlight, going by the SKY ARTS coverage i saw.
He does seem to polarize opinion.

if i understand your comment, i must agree. There are many who love him and many who hate him - like marmite i guess;)

I like Slash.Haven't heard any of his solo stuff.I think he is the definition of a rock guitar player.

you haven't heard any of his solo stuff!? You are missing out my friend..it is truly incredible. Check out 'gotten' and 'nothing to say' ... 2 very contrasting songs from the same record.

you're welcome man!
- perhaps the extreme opinions he gets are as a result of him (through no fault of his own) being over rated largely by an audience who do not quite understand his playing style as opposed to somebody like Joe.. (if that makes any sense???)
Slash is a great rock icon, - he has the looks and style but technically (if there is such a thing) he is not the greatest guitarist despite being voted as such, - unless you take looks and style into the equation when voting for the best. IN saying that the music he plays suits his style, - the video that for me showed up his limitations was on-stage with ZZ Top and John Mayer playing "La Grange", - BFG and JM left him for dead by a long way! His main riff at the start sounds really wooden to my ear.
..but in saying that he is what is, and he is damn good at it, - maybe the over analysis is the problem!

Ha ha... Marmite! good analogy!

that's the perfect way to sum him up if you ask me
and thanks Brack

I would say that blues or bluesrock players require a different if not more complex skill set.Hard rock can be a lot simpler and riff oriented.A great rock song ca be simple from a pure note by note basis. That's why I would judge Slash as a player different from somone like let's say Buddy Guy.Not saying Slash is not great, but the blues is not his style. Now when you put someone like Joe on a rock song it becomes something at another level.
Which leads me down another path. Many would argue that metal guitar as in Metallica and Pantera would be more difficult due to the speed in which it is played.I would open up any thoughts from players on what's more difficult ,metal or blues,or is it totally apples and oranges.I hope I am making some sense on this

Ohh...I'm not going there Gary, but nice try!
I grew up loving both... and still love both!
I personally don't think it matters whether you're a rock, blues or jazz guitarist. Quality is quality and in my opinion Slash doesn't quite measure up on his own from what I've seen here and elsewhere. When he was with GnR, there was BIG sound and riffs that I think kinda hid his playing and we, as fans, didn't focus on him as much. Unlike the way we do with Joe and other guitarists who's fame is really built on just their guitar playing. As always.....just my opinion.

From what I've heard of Slash, I quite like him but I would say the some metal guitarists just seem to play a couple of notes really fast, a bit of feedback and the odd squeal and people think they're the next Jimi Hendrix. A lot of it sounds all the same to me.......must be getting old !!! Give me some blues played with feeling any day, such as Billy Gibbons, Rory, Jimi, Paul Kossoff and of course JOE !!

agreed...technically he is FAR from the best
in my opinion he is a great musician but just a good guitar player
Hours of mediocrity, punctuated by moments of brilliance in most settings. He does not seem to be as versatile as some...yet I heard one of his tunes on a Les Paul CD that was hauntingly beautiful and almost jazzy. So to me the setting defines the sound often.
I feel the same way about Angus Young, Joe Perry, Kieth Richards, Ace Frehly and so many more. They are in the right setting and they are genius in selling songs. I envy them that. But it's the chemistry as much as their talent that sets them apart. I'm not being a sour puss. I think they're very good but the sum of the parts, etc.

an interesting example of this is probably the Tokyo concert where he played brilliantly then some of the earlier stuff where he was just a mess quite frankly
I'm not really a Slash fan but I think his play is respectable. Much better than I can play, that's for sure. I stumbled on set of videos of an acoustic set that he did with Myles Kennedy. I think that it's worth watching.
