Re: Recommend me a 4x12 Speaker cab

It seems like Avatar has a pretty nice set up for ordering...So if I wanted to purchase either a 2x12 or a 4x12 from them what would the best specifications be?

how many ohms?

What speakers?

Re: Recommend me a 4x12 Speaker cab

You need to speak to whoever is going to build your cabinet. Tell them what kind of music you are playing and what sounds you are trying to achieve. If it is EVs that you want, they need to know up front so they can build your cabinet to support a heavier speaker. If you go with EVs, I would suggest a road case or casters to help with moving it.

Avatar 4x12 cabinets aren't very deep. I think deep cabinets sound better. Like the Marshall 1960 cabs from marshall are deeper than valvestate cabs, and mesa boogie 4x12 cabinets are deeper than 1960 cabs. To me there's a big difference in sound there. But, of course, the bigger the heavier, and it's going to be heavy if you put EVs in there (like 20 pounds per speaker).

I think Joe's cabinets are super deep for what that's worth. When I saw them on stage, they almost looked like "boxes" instead of "cabinets."

I think you should do 16 ohm speakers. Of course, if you went 2x12 - the two 16ohm speakers would be 8 ohm. On the 4x12, it depends how you wire it, you can do 8 or 16ohms with 16 ohm speakers.

Re: Recommend me a 4x12 Speaker cab

If you contact mojo they def know how to build a cabinet to those specs.  They used to build Joe's Cabs...  And Wharris made a good point, since it most likely will be on the heavy side a road case might be a good idea to keep it from getting beat up during transit.  Even a cheaper one would suffice and won't break the bank either.  Or at least a vinyl cover..  I've been thinking of getting something myself since a dent here and there is starting to turn into DENTS here and there.

Re: Recommend me a 4x12 Speaker cab

I just placed my order for a Marshall YJM100 which should be delivered sometime in September and since this will be a very special amp and expensive one too I would like to have a very nice cabinet to go along with the amp.  However, the more I read this thread the more questions keep coming up and here are just a few.

1.) The head is almost 30" wide and at my age I only want a two speaker cabinet, but most two speaker cabinets are too narrow to place the head on, does any manufacturer make a wide 2X12 cabinet or am I left with getting a 4X12 cabinet?

2.) A friend uses EV12's and they sound fine to me so I have decided, at this point, to go with a set of EV12's, but when I contacted MOJO and asked if they beef up the bracing for the EV12's their rep said "no, as long as the plywood is 1/2" all will be fine."   I don't know if this rep is crazy or just a summer intern, but 1/2" birch ply just seems a bit weak for me, anybody agree?

3.) A few years ago Joe posted about cabinets and he seemed to emphasize choosing a straight cabinet, is there a reason Joe might not use a slanted cabinet?

4.) This question is for NPB_EST.1979: I checked out the link you provided to Forte Musical and there cabinet's are pretty cool, but do you loose any punch as a result of the side vents?

Thanks to all for a great education!

I think Avatar makes their cabinets 30" wide which would be good as far as looks.  The straight cabs tend to have more depth and punch but a lot of it IS the type of wood used that gives you a good tone.  Yngwie also favors the GT75 celestions if you're going for his sound.  I'd probably talk to someone else at Mojo if you're unsure of the knowledge the first guy had..  I don't know how they are to be specially braced but if he said 1/2" is fine, then maybe it's true.

I agree with using 16Ω speakers.

Re: Recommend me a 4x12 Speaker cab

Some people feel that straight cabs have a better base response (more overall interior space). Also, consider a semi-open back with the EVs as those suckers move some serious air. Mojo used to cell a 4x12 cabinet that they said was spec'd for SRV. It looked exactly like the cabs Joe was using at the time. If you give them a call and tell them what you are planning, they will know exactly what you need (2x12 or 4x12). Don at Category 5 is another great resource for helping you get a good cabinet built.

Re: Recommend me a 4x12 Speaker cab

I am not a fan of Yngwie, I'm just a big fan of the Plexi and the YJM100 is a beefed up Plexi (is that possible?) with more versatility.

A friend plays metal through a 4X12 Mills cabinet loaded with four EV Black Labels and I don't know about moving air, but it moves the furniture plus you need a forklift to move the cab.  What surprised me about the EV's is how nice they sound at lower levels.  My friend is a former classical guitarist turned metal head (sad, he graduated from New England Conservatory but there is no money to be made) so when he plays classical every now and then the sound is very articulate at lower levels.

I play classic Blues based rock and a two speaker cabinet is more than enough, but I was hoping to avoid buying a 4X12 sized cab. With such a wide and deep head I may have no other choice, but I'll give Cat 5 a try next week.

Now I need to get a better understanding of ohms, I must have cut class when the professor went over that material.  I was a Fender guy for so many decades that it was never a concern.

Re: Recommend me a 4x12 Speaker cab

A 2x12 cabinet will fit under a full size plexi head with no problem.
