Topic: Goldie in the making

My luthier has all the parts (and the front decal... thanks Spider!) to make my goldie clone. I would have done it, but I lined everything up poorly on my last strat project with drilling holes for the pickguard and bridge. So I'm leaving that to the hands of an expert. He confirmed such things are indeed a pain!

MightyMite bassboat Gold sparkle strat body. My very own 6k single coil pickups that I hand wound. I am taking artistic liberty and using a reverse headstock strat neck that I already have. This might bring in some D(i)ck Dale fans as well!

The body is heavy ash, I wish it was lighter, but oh well. The body is finished in poly and I wish it was done in nitro. Needless to say I won't be relicing the finish. You could toss a poly finished guitar down the driveway and still be able to buff it out.

Only thing I'm looking for are the stickers on the back:
Little Feat VIP 10/4 2001 back stage pass
oval Joe sticker (black and white)
Woodstock 99 sticker (for neck plate)
Hot Licks clear decal

Remaking the missing decals wouldn't be impossible since I'm a Master of Fine Arts in graphic design, but I'd rather not do all the extra work. Anybody have some leads on where I can get stickers like the ones on the back of the old Goldie?

When finished, it will look like Goldie found the fountain of youth! cool

Re: Goldie in the making

Good luck with your project. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished guitar. I was thinking of doing something similar in a Tele. Just the gold paint, not down to the decals and such.

These guys built me a pink, reliced strat last year.  They were super nice and very helpful.  They do sell replica decals, none of which you're looking for but if you contact them, they may be able to make them for you.  I'm just guessing since they already make others..  Worth a shot!  -Seth

Re: Goldie in the making

Guy - where did you get the bassboat body?

The one I ordered from Mighty Mite is a LOT heavier of a body than i was expecting. sad
If I don't like it, I might try my hand at another one.

Re: Goldie in the making

Ordered a warmoth body - adler, had it sprayed by Marty Bell -- who does KILLER sparkle finishes.

He tried to apply a lady decal given to me by Spider, but it messed up on the install.  He hooked me up with a second one ( which is very much appreciated!!! ) to install on the install.

Got a buddy that has a vinyl shop, that is scanning the girl and going to make a sticker version of water decal, so interested to see how that comes out?   Additionally he made me some JOE stickers, the white ones on the back of goldie.

The neck for my goldie is also a warmoth that Joe signed the headstock for me, so that is cool.....

finally had a JB pick logo neck plate made and jb guitar pick decal for the headstock.....

so more of a homage then a replica

Re: Goldie in the making

I got the body all assembled and working. Time to apply the decals.

I had some high-res images of Goldie from the auction site, and I remade the decals on the back by hand (using Adobe Illustrator) matched the fonts, colors, etc. So I'll be making decals for the back that look brand new. And thanks to Cliff, I didn't have to remake the white oval sticker on the back... and I was able to Photoshop the Little Feat image I was sent too. big_smile

The body doesn't have any checking or anything because of the poly finish. It won't do that anything close to resembling nitro finishes. sad So that combined with the new looking stickers... it will look 90% like Joe's Goldie only with no mileage or mojo. Like it's all brand new.

My two elements of individuality will be the reverse headstock. I've been using this neck on other bodies and like it a lot. That and I'm using my 6k vintage wound singlecoils made by yours truly cool I also noticed Goldie had a black neck plate on the back, and I'm using gold. I like the big heavy tele style chrome knobs, but I might try some white standard strat knobs and see if I like them. We'll see...

Re: Goldie in the making

Very nice Nic! Save me a copy of those stickers please.

Re: Goldie in the making

That is cool. If I ever own a Strat again, it will likely be a sparkle.

My GOLDIE Build Part 2

So SPIDER hooked me up with a water decal for the front of the guitar, when the painter tried to apply, and was going to clear coat over the top of, the decal got ruined, so had him finish the body.  SPIDER was SUPER COOL and hooked me up with a second water decal.

Worried about screwing up the second decal, had buddy that runs a vinyl shop scan and make vinyl copies -- so if anyone is looking, and doesn't mind vinyl as opposed to water decal, let me know???

Decal on -- prior to clear being done, and decal messed up:

another shot of messed up decal:

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid= … =544093715

buddy scanned the 2nd decal from SPIDER and here is his copy:

Hot off the press!!!!

Closer shot....

So, anyone looking for decal in vinyl I can help!!!

My GOLDIE Build Part 3

The neck plates -- I know on GOLDIE there is a decal on the neck plate, opted for something a little more custom on my build --- which is more of an homage then a replica

nice touch huh???

My GOLDIE Build Part 4

As you all know, sourcing 10+ year old stickers is not easy -- so once again my buddy to the rescue, making copies of the white oval JOE sticker -- again, I have more if anyone is interested???

Placed mine on the backplate....as body is shiny, no checking as it was painted couple months ago....hence more of homage and not a replica so much....
