Topic: Montreal Show

Saw Joe last night.  Great show.    Unique Montreal moment was when he played a  Leonard Cohen song  (a Montreal native) on a multicolour Fender Thinline.   Funniest moment--aside from the new  drummer's moments of irony  during the Who song--  occurred when he broke a string on his Music Man guitar during the solo of India/ Mountain time(?) and turned around to look at probably his guitar tech.  I think he was saying, I told you to change the strings.   New drummer was very good and looks like the love child of Animal from the Muppets.  Joe played with the enthusiasm of  a fifteen year old playing Guitar Hero.   Blue, blue, green, blue.

Why will Joe be around for  a looooooooong time?   British Blues/ Rock virtuoso. A very good showman.   Good pacing of show.  Appears to take his trade seriously but not himself.  Owns own record company and apparently, in the words of B.B. King, signs all the cheques. (Master of own destiny.) Works a lot.   Think of smart rock stars such as Jon Bon Jovi  and Mick Jaggar, mixed in with the ability of Roy Buchannon , but without the apparent demons.  Very young with much time to grow even more.  Think of how Clapton evolved from  fiery  Cream youth to now.  The young man is the complete package.

Betcha Joe would smoke the Buckethead song on Guitar Hero!!!  Blue, blue, green, blue.

Nice, I've been searching for a review all morning...can you ...ah never mind, I was going to ask about the setlist, but I like surprises!

Re: Montreal Show

32 shows and I've never seen Joe break a string before.
I'm not sure I've heard anyone here MENTION him breaking a string during a show.
Unique.

You've been lucky. 12 shows and I've seen him break strings twice. He's so smooth at it he doesn't even miss a lick. The tech always has the backup ready just in case for the quick change. That was probably the look, "get ready for the swap".

Re: Montreal Show

He broke one on Mountain Time in Dallas but I never even noticed. He just worked around it. Never missed a note.

Re: Montreal Show

The show was incredible. And meeting Joe before the show was such an amazing experience. I've been on his street team since 10th grade of high school, and in the past have flown to NYC to see him play, and have been there for the few shows he's played in Canada. Seeing him with a full house of people again was so good to see. The new drummer fits in well and is obviously very talented as well. Joe's playing just keeps on getting better, and the guitar tone was absolutely life-changing as usual. Also to the original poster - the "multi coloured thinline telecaster" - that's a Gigliotti. They're metal top guitars that have that incredible shiny finish to them. The way the stage lights reflect off of it is incredible. And if I'm not mistaken, Joe lost that particular guitar through travelling at some point a couple years ago and it was since returned. I was happy to see him play it on stage in Montreal. The set-list was as follows:

Cradle Rock
So Many Roads
When the Fire hits the Sea
So, It's like That
Heartaches and Nickels
Slow Train
Dust Bowl
You Better Watch Yourself
Sloe Gin
Ballad of John Henry
Lonesome Road Blues (played on a sweet Gibson ES)
Happier Times
Steal Your Heart Away
Great Flood
Young Man Blues (The Who cover)
Woke Up Dreaming
Django
Mountain Time

Encore:
Bird on a Wire
Just got Paid/Dazed and confused

It was EPIC.

Re: Montreal Show

Every once in a while you go to a live show that reminds you why you hauled your **** 60km through traffic , paid exorbitant parking prices, grabbed a fast supper on the go, and gave up some of that extremely precious mid-week sleeping time.
Last night’s Joe Bonamassa show at Theatre St-Denis, was one of those shows.
Unfortunately, Bonamassa was unavailable for a video interview, but the show spoke for itself.
Bleary-eyed, with coffee in hand, I smile when I think of the number of times during last night’s show that every hair on my arms stood on end; as if giving Joe a standing ovation all of their own. It was nothing short of magical.
Bonamassa serenaded the audience while tone-rich melodies dripped from the strings, for an astounding two and a half hours. The only interruptions to the music, were two brief intervals in which he expressed his love for the city and noted that it had been over seven years since his last visit.
Over the course of the evening, Bonamassa played over a dozen different guitars, each seemingly more spectacular than the previous. The most interesting one however, was a new Gibson single pick-up Les Paul body, with a Firebird neck; it screamed as much visually as musically.
The audience absolutely devoured the set, demonstrating their appreciation with random standing ovations. Bonamassa rewarded the crowd’s appreciation with two encores.
Bonamassa provided an amazing evening, and this writer, for one, is hoping that he won’t wait another seven years before sharing his talent with Montrealers again.
