Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season
Tigers retired Sparky's number today. D-Backs were in town, so both Gibson and Trammell were there in an official capacity. It was pretty cool.

Nothing less than Sparky deserved! The Padres are retiring Trevor Hoffman's number soon. Anything to distract the dismayed fans down here as the agony prevails. They did take 2 for 3 from the Braves though. Truth be told, they suck! I've never seen so many rally killing double plays with bases loaded. They're talking trading away some of our relievers for prospects now.
Rick
Ceremonial first pitches are usually fairly mundane. In San Diego, we sometimes have the unusual. Who could forget Roseanne Barr's crotch grab after the National Anthem? Now here is a first pitch of a different stripe. http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=16343535

edit: Oh, we were talking about collisions a bit back and I mentioned catchers had to be tough guys... the second part of the clip from tonights game. Pena mans up!
Just when you have hung your team out to dry and start looking at Tour de France tv schedules, bizarre things happen. How about them Padres J Dawg! Two All Star pitchers in a row roughed up! Go figure...

I knew you'd be crowing over this mini moment of Padre brilliance Rick, but who's wearing the World Series Champions patch on their sleeves? Get ready for a brawl tonight after Qualls behavior after the putout of Torres @ the plate last night. The Pad's appear to be very frustrated on a few levels. First they gotta be still be reeling from their collapse last Sept., then they offed their franchise player Gonzalez, and as pointed out on KNBR this AM a Giants/Padre game @ Petco is like a home game for the Giants with all the black & orange in the stands, and the Pads came to town 10 games out. I can't blame your guys for gettin' a little feisty. The Giants have been plagued by injuries, but some how remain off & on top in the west. The all important trade deadline is coming up @ the end of the month, that's when you'll see how commited the Padres are to their hopes this season. Historically teams in SD's position usually hold fire sales to regroup for next season. We need a 2nd baseman due to Sanchez' injury....whattaya got to offer?????? Speakin' of doin' it with smoke n mirrors, we don't even have a .300 ave. in the entire lineup....go figure. Don't miss a second of tonights game, somethin's gonna give.
VIVA Gigantes!!!

Every word you type is true J Dawg. Qualls was frustrated with the defense behind him, with good reason. He was pitching well and the way they gave up unearned runs was pitiful. That was a good play at the plate though and he blocked it well. That was a nice in-your-face spike though! All we do down here is shake our heads in dismay. Give one of us a chance to crow and we're roosters at dawn! I've got to miss the game tonight. It is my little sister's major over the hill birthday and I can't pass up a chance to rub it in while I remind her to fill out that medicare card! Sometimes our cable channel runs the game a second time so there's a chance. Broom time? I doubt it. Fire sale time and we have an ace closer rumored to be on the block but it is going to cost someone dearly. I don't think you want any of our middle infield players though. Gonzo had to go, no way can this bush league ownership cough up Red Sox cash. He will tear up that pitching as he is doing now for years. The green monster beckons with his opposite field power. I see a run at a triple crown in the works for him and good for him! He's a class act. The Giants should hang at the top in the NLW, the whole division is weak this year.
OK Rick, you're excused, family comes first! Now go watch that NFL video I just posted, it's a riot!

Fantastic dinner with the family and sis. Jumped in the car and flipped on the radio. Bottom of the 9th, 5-5! Sitting at home now and in the 12th. I love this game! Pads hanging tough.
Rick
Bottom of the 14th comin' up. BTW, cooler heads prevailed tonight especially after the Pads took a 2-0 lead, can't afford to be plunkin' guys when you're behind. Uh-oh.....GAME OVER!!! Schierholtz 2nd homer of the night.
Good Night San Diego,
J Dawg
Someone had to score eventually J Dawg. GG. Qualls said he was caught up in the excitement of the play, it was the first time in his life he'd made a play at the plate. Anyway, the Giants have no room to talk with the antics up there. Panda is the biggest hot dog on the field. Should be a good one again tonight with Zito.
Rick
Finally they are starting to talk about my red hot Braves, 12-3 over the last 15 I think. The starting pitching has come around, and we have cranked it up offensively even with some nagging injuries. Danny Uggla is starting to turn it around, Chipper put the MOJO on his bat last night, a ritual type thing I'm told, and he came through for the second night in a row. Martin Prado could be back next week after a serious staph infection.
It's put up or shut up time now before the break, we go in to Philly tomorrow. Good first half all in all, I'll take it and very much like our chances of winning the division.
Jason Heyward has been struggling. Freddie started Eric Hinske in left last night and it apparently didn't sit too well with Jason, or maybe he really did need a days rest. Jason is 3 for 3 today, needs a triple for the cycle, and it appears (famous last words) that Atlanta will sweep the Rockies.
Tres
I noticed Tres. Hotlanta is cruising along nicely. The old injury deal seems to even out over time. Just another random thing to mess up the works. Our boys have been sputtering all season, but consolation is looking north to see the mess in LA. Things could be worse.
Rick
The late, very great MgrDick Williams.........I am more than sad and blue today.

He was a great one Rocket, and am reminded of how many players on those A's teams came out of their minor league affiliate Birmingham Barons. My parents took me to Rickwood Field to see the likes of Reggie Jackson, Vida Blue, Sal Bando, Bert Campaneris, Gene Tenace, John 'Blue Moon' Odom, Joe Rudi, and others. It's also interesting that on that '71 A's team, there was an infielder by the name of Tony La Russa.
Tres
I watched him when he was here. Old school! RIP MrDick Williams.

When he was here Rick, was definitely one of the best and certainly most exciting years in San Diego Padres Baseball Club history. A stellar '84 season, only to get outfoxed in the series.
Going back to my first major league baseball game(s) in Boston 1967, he made an instant impact wherever he went...my favorite modern day manager, and always an Oakland A in my scorebook! Baseball needs managers like him with these modern day prima donnas, tell it like it is and no pussyfooting! Sit down!!!
Rock ON & Keep the Faith,
Rocket
