Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

Angela, I appreciate the love for Brian McCann but he has had a terrible first half by his standards. He's slow as ever, average and power hitting are down, strike outs up if that's possible, and I'm ready for them to trade him while we can get something for him. We have what may very well be the best backup catcher in either league in David Ross. We have another highly praised catcher in minor league ball that could come up immediately. I hate to bail on Brian after all he has done here, but it is a business and will be a tough decision by management.

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

I had no idea that the Phillies had that losing record Angela. By some quirk, the Cubs and Padres have seemed to meet when both get lucky and have a good season, with one or the other losing in some horrible twist of fate at the end and dash the dreams of glory. Now we're locked in a battle to see which team can come out with a better record and avoid the dead bottom.  Ya gotta have some reason to cheer on your team when things have gone so wrong. Losing sure is a big part of baseball. That is what makes the occasional winning streak so sweet, and has led to legends of fabled curses and such explanations of huge streaks of bad luck. Fans of benighted teams need something to hang their hats on. Darn near the All Star break and my Padres just returned home with the first winning road trip of the season. We'll take it!
What a game!

What??? Are you taunting me cuz your team beat us? Hey G Dawg, let's see how much swagger you got by the end of the season. You're only half way there. A lot of things happen before the end of this month, like the trade deadline. I know you're ridin' high since this is the first time the Expos have made any noise in a long time. I've been down this road with the Giants & The Tribe many times, you don't count your chickens till they hatch. Bueno Suerte Amigo!

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

NO team is beating up on the Nats right now, they have also dominated Atlanta. Braves can't catch a break, every time we win they also win. But only 4 back at the break, acceptable I guess. Seems like if I talk bad about someone (Brian McCann) they proceed to pick up their game. Brian was the difference in our sweep at PHI, he homered every game including a grande salami on Fri night. Chipper may have had a little talk with him, he's been getting in some people's faces here lately.

Hey Bill,

How cool is that! Being that Me & You were only 8 years old in 1964 when the Phillies made history, share more details about meeting John Klippstein via Chicago! Do you have something signed by him?

Angela,
John Klippstein Jr. was one of my best friends in the late 70's. He had a very short college pitching career due to a blown out elbow.
We were neighbors in the apartment complex I lived in right before married life. John's dad and I got to talk baseball on a few occasions when John Jr and I stopped by their house to visit. John Sr and his wife lived NW of Chicago...he was such a nice man.
John Jr. and i played a bunch of 16" softball together, for John's company's team which was owned by a super scout for the Orioles (a friend of John Sr.). John played 3rd and I played short. John Jr. had a habit of telling people (including his dad) that I was the best shortstop in the city.
True story: one day "super scout" showed up to watch a game. I had a particularly good game that day. John tells me the next day that SS asked where I played in college (I didn't). Then asked where I played in high school (I didn't). According to John he couldn't believe it and said I had all the tools and could've been a big leaguer.
Not so sure about that...I could field and throw with anyone, but was a very average hitter.
I rarely repeat that story, but I think Sr. knew I could play some and liked it.

Reminds me of Matt Williams early days with the Giants. Soft hands, good tools, can't hit the curveball. He racked up a lot of frequent flyer miles between SF & Phoenix.

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

Wow! what a sleeper of a Mid-Summer Classic, unless you're a Giants fan! Matt Cain pitches 2 shutout innings to start the game and the Panda & the Melkman accounted for 5 of the 8 runs scored by the Jr. circuit squad. Melky Cabrera walked away with the MVP hardware and the keys to a convertible Camaro. Not a bad night for the Bay Area boys in the orange & black!

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

I'll take back what I said about SF fans stuffing the ballot box, the players validated their voting in spades. Really happy for Melky, one of our former ATL Braves as was Furcal. Dan Uggla also contibuted an RBI, so the AL got a west coast beatdown from all parties concerned.

That's a good reply Bill. A friend posted a "would you change things if you could" comment on FB the other day. I replied, play the hand you're dealt, after all that's the way God planned it....right? There's no "do overs".

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

Sweet answer Bill and gotta' love Marty McFly.

Now Mr. Chicago, I just heard this on the news, a big anniversary in Chicago and Chicago baseball history, July 12, 1979. I can't believe I never heard of this.  Disco had its place in history and I think some people look back and are embarrassed to admit they enjoyed it. At least we were all burning calories and getting some good cardio exercise!! lol

Angela,
In case you didn't read the entire article, the field was deemed unplayable and the White Sox had to forfeit the second game of the double header.
I sided with the explosives...never liked disco.
