It remains to be seen if the Nationals' offense will be enough. Last year's champions (St. Louis) were 8th in the league in ERA, but led the NL in scoring by a comfortable margin. They were matched up against another team (Texas) that ranked 5th in ERA but 3rd in runs scored...
Then there's the 2011 Angels, who led the AL in ERA but finished 10 games out of first in their division and missed the playoffs, and the 2011 Phllies, who led the NL in ERA but finished 7th in runs scored and lost in the 1st round of the playoffs after hitting just .226 (.604 OPS)...
Your pitching needs to be good enough to get you into the playoffs, but in general it is the teams that excel at scoring runs who overcome the teams who excel at preventing them...
Would you trade the league leader in RBIs for the league leader in ERA, straight up? Of course not...
