I was at the Cubs-White Sox game today. When we arrived at the park, we found out that Kerry Wood had announced that he was retiring. The info we got was that they were going to let Wood pitch another game or two, which seemed odd.
So Wood comes in with one out in the 8th inning, Cubs down 3-2 with a runner on first, strikes out the only batter he faces with a 78 mph change-up right after throwing a 96 mph fastball. The entire infield comes to the mound as they pull Wood, handshakes, hugs and high fives. The runner on first base doffs his cap toward Wood and it appeared that he was getting recognition from the Sox dugout. As he approaches the dugout, his son (who looks like hes 6 or 7) runs into daddy's arms. They walked off to a thunderous standing ovation.
Kerry Wood retired today and it was as an emotional moment as I've ever witnessed in a baseball game. What a great guy...he wanted to finish his career in Chicago and took considerably less money to come here than he could have got elsewhere.
His rookie season was a thing of beauty and (unfortunately), probably his best year.
Thanks for the memories Kerry!

Yeah Bill that put a little lump my throat, I saw the replay on MLB.....that rookie season was so cool....I'm not sure if that's the same year he struck out 20 in a game, seams like it though.....Geez, Ole Shreddy wants to go to a game with you....it's all good....some day, I'm going back to the GREAT city of Chicago smile

Shreddy,
The 20 strikeout game was Woods 5th start in the majors, a one hitter against Houston and as dominating a performance as I've ever seen.
They started referring to him as K-k-k-k-k-k-Kerry Wood for awhile after that game, lol. This year was a disaster for him, but I'm so glad he got to go out on a personal high note, even though the Cubs lost.
I'd love to catch a game together sometime...if you're ever in Chicago, the tickets are on me.

I saw the replay of the Cubs-Sox when Kerry came out, and it put a lump in my throat as well, a great standing O for him and well deserved. I remember when my son was that size, when he rushed toward Kerry all I was thinking was "protect yourself!" smile

Time for the two NL east pacesetters to go head to head tonight, Tres. wink

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

Well you can go ahead and put the win in for the Nats tonight, what a terrible mismatch. Mike Minor has been awful pretty much all year, I thought they would send him down to AAA but we can't do that already down one starter. We were just swept 4 games at the Reds, bats have gone a little cold. And we have some dinged up folks including Chipper, F Freeman with continuing eye problems, Matt Diaz and Brian McCann with a flu bug of some sort. Steven won't have to pitch all that well tonight to get the win. I have been looking forward to this for some time, but wish we could have matched Tim Hudson or Brandon Beachy against him instead of Mike. Braves need to take 2 of 3 to get back on track.

I got it wrong, it is Detwiler vs Hudson tonight, Steven pitches tomorrow night I think against Mike.

My son bought tix for the 4 of us today...The Sac Rivercats were playing the Reno Aces (Diamond backs affliate)....I get up in the 6th inning for a cup of coffee, come back 5 minutes later...."WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN??...David caught a foul ball that hit the seat where you were sitting"....strangers are razzing me...I look at my son, he shakes his head and rolls his eyes as to say no....I lol, oh your so funny, like I'm going to believe that....I sit down and my son taps me on the shoulder.....he has the ball!!!....we are all laughing....the crowd gives him a hard time and he gives me the ball smile ....I look up at the big screen in centerfield, it zeros in on my wife and she has no idea...I say "LOOK".....it was an amazing day...I get home and write the date, score, and Manny Ramirez stat line for the game....I saw my friend at the game, he's retiring this thursday, and never caught a foul ball in over 50 years of attending games....I sprayed the ball with hairspray and will give it to him as a going away present this Friday at the retirement party....I'm the designated driver for the boozers in attendance, it's going to be a doozy...lookout for the Saturday sick calls mad

Great story Shreddy. The only time I came close, I'd sprung for some good seats in the sun on the 3rd base side on the field at the old park. Garvey turned on an inside heater and rifled a hooking missile right at me. I'm holding a beer and have a plate of nachos in my lap and I'm knowing it is going to hurt. I put up my other hand to try, but it hit the rail in front of me and ricocheted up to skull a guy behind me. Whew!
Bring a bucket bud. wink
You guys better get out the spurs and goad those G's. Damn Dodgers are running away with it. Us? Hah! 'bout 18 back and not even Allstar break. roll

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

Great story Shred! That ball is making the circuit...nice gesture for your friends retirement!

Rick...Padres v Cubs today. Maybe the Cubs can break their 12 game losing streak?
A sweep of the Padres would shift the label of "worst" team in baseball to your Padres...don't see that happening though, unless it the Padres holding the broom!

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

The NL east table is the exact opposite of what any sane person might have expected. lol

The Nats keep on surprising with this sweep of the Braves, and have still conceded fewer runs than any other team. cool

My commiserations Bill. You should have a good chance to at least win the series, our teams both suck, but Padres bats were left somewhere else!

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

Congrats to your Cubs, Bill! Slide stops at 12. Question time again. big_smile

Bill (or anyone who knows) - what are the factors in Chicago that determine whether you wind up a Cubs or Sox fan? Part of town, historic ethnic or religious affiliations? Just wondering. wink

In general, it's north side/south side of town...and although a gross generalization the south side is blue collar and the north side is white collar.
I grew up a cubs fan, even though my dad worked a cutting machine in a paper company. We lived in a lower middle class home on the near north side of Chicago.
I may be the only native Chicagoan who cheers for both teams.
When the Cubs traded Greg Maddox, I vowed to never watch another Cubs game until the Wrigleys sold the team...a vow I kept. During that period I started watching Sox games. When the Wrigleys sold the team to the Tribune company, I started watching the Cubs again but remained a Sox fan. LOTS of animosity between teams and fans.

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

Isn't that the truth, Braves from close to first to cellar with the Phils. I don't remember an 8 game losing streak like this in a long time. Injuries and ills and other strange "eye" problems have contributed, but the real problem now is that the bullpen is faltering. They were very good to start the year, not so much right now.

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

Bill's getting his wish. Cubbies have won the first two. We're all suffering Tres. Pads have 13 on the DL now. The AAA boys are making a lot of round trips to fill in the gaps. The over/under on losses might be kissing the century mark the way it's going, and still no deal with my cable co. and the team so the merciful blackout continues. I'd be pissed if they were winning  a little but now I don't care.
Rick
edit: Phil Mickleson tossed his hat in with the O'Malleys for an ownership shot at the Padres. Bringing his checkbook (I heard it is flush wink ) as well as his name. He said he's been a Padres fan since he was a kid. smile

Woohoo! Two in a row...15 more and the Cubs will be back at .500!

Don't look now, but the White Sox have been playing extremely well of late.

It's a sad day in Padretown when we can't even beat the Cubbies. Keep kicking them Bill, they're crawling for the curb. lol
