Frank Zappa underrated?! He's rolling over his empty grave laughing!  lol

It's amazing, to me, how many people only know Frank's "novelty" songs or have never even heard his music.  When I look at lists like 100 Greatest Guitarists ( http://www.digitaldreamdoor.com/pages/b … uitar.html ) and see Frank at number 52 I feel he's underrated.  And I know that Frank thought ranking guitarists was "a stupid hobby" and that he said "my technique as a guitar player is fair".  So my opinion the he is underrated is just that - my opinion.

And I thought his grave was unmarked - not empty.  Why would it be empty?

Jokes my friend, jokes, jokes and not attacks... Why would it be empty?  lol  I'll leave it open to humorous thoughts when reflecting on the absurdity of it... He is often overlooked I agree, but those who ever looked and listened rate him high.  Peace my friend!

There are a number of very underrated musicians.

For my Guitar Players,  I have to go with Paul Kossoff.  Michael Schenker.  Uli Roth.

They are Musician's musicians but will never be recognized in the mainstream public and will never get there due honor in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  Or any awards.  Those that were fortunate enough to have experienced them know they are in the upper echelon.  So much depth to each one.

+1 on Koss and Schenker.

I'd also add Tull's Martin Barre to the list

Re: Under Rated Guitarists

Hi Brack,

I get your statement, but in the USA, David Gilmour is way more popular, therefore rated more frequently than Mark Knopfler, so I think I'd alter my assessment to underrated/underrecognized guitarists.  wink  Steve Howe is also way more recognized than Mark Knopfler in the States. IMO

Angela mentioned, Mark Knopfler, Curby mentioned, Steve Howe, both on a par with others, the likes of Dave Gilmour IMO. Underrated? by anyone over the age of 30 and has a keen interest in guitar based music..... definitely not!!
I will throw in another name, Ritchie Blackmore. Ask someone in the street who looks under 30,  who Ritchie Blackmore is ? [ even with a picture to help them] the answer..... more often than not, would be...  WHO ?  roll

Just thought of another ..... Tony McPhee ( Groundhogs )

Re: Under Rated Guitarists

One such under rated by today's audiences I would have to say is Nils Lofgren.

Most see him as 'just' Bruce's sideman, as 'The Boss' doesn't give his guitarists too many high spots.

Fact is Nils was headlining around the world while Bruce was still punching to get known. Nils has never stopped learning and developing his talent. Nils' chops would stand him in good stead in ANY company.

As a guitarist, singer and songwriter he is criminally under rated. But that is today. In his heady days of solo stardom he was one of the top 'go to' guys. Probably why Bruce went to him in the first place.................

Re: Under Rated Guitarists

I realize it's already been said, but Gilmour, underrated?  For a guy whos best known work is in Pink Floyd, the universe could unfold again another 500 times and he'd be nowhere near as famous the other 499 times as he is now.  That is not to insult his work or the band, just to point out that they are not they most palatable, easy to listen to band in the world or even close to it.  They are nothing like any massively famous band at all.  They aren't exactly the Rolling Stones in that regard is what I mean.  Yet he's routinely ranked in the top five on any list, often times number 2.  He's an all time great player, and everybody knows it.

I'll also take issue with the generational thing, unless you want to apply that to pretty much every guitarist in the world from the 90s and earlier.  Pink Floyd is still constantly played on classic rock radio, and any kid that listens to that will know who Gilmour is by the time he/she is 14 years old.  In terms of recognition, what more can you ask for?  Not everyone is going to dive into a back catalogue, that is personal taste.  And beyond personal taste, 90% of people don't dive into back catalogues anyway. They are a band that doesn't tour or put out new music yet almost everyone in the world knows who they are.  They are as far from underrated as it gets.  Calling Pink Floyd or David Gilmour underrated strips all meaning from the word.

I'll wholeheartedly agree with many on here, particularly Frank Marino and Nils Lofgren.  Anyone have the Nils Live Acoustic album?  It's as good as it gets.

I'll also throw Bugs Henderson in the ranks.  IMO up with SRV and Johnny Winter in the texas blues rock pantheonon, yet relatively unknown.

Also, along with Eric Gales, Philip Sayce, I'll throw in any of the many, many insanely talented blues rock players to emerge in the last 20 years who are unknown outside of a few hundred people in every major city.

Among their pears, I’M sure that Joe and Rik are well known and respected. As for the industry, Grammys, The Hall of Fame and every list below, they are more than under rated. They don’t even make the list.
