Yes, but I wonder how many people are actually BUYING????!:):). I say that if record stores won't back down with the retail prces, nore and more artists will find diff ways of selling their albums DIRECTLY to the fans:):)!

It's not in the interest of record companies to let HMV fail - hence an official support statement, http://www.retail-week.com/sectors/ente … 11.article

By contrast, Bon Jovi played 80 shows, AC/DC performed 40 shows and U2 played 32.

and Joe performed at over 200 gigs in 2010. 'nuff said.

Yes, i was going to mention that.... but  thanks Wooders!
Anyone know how much Joe earned from his 200 + shows... roughly ?

$27.31

Well, It's "Record store" day today and it was nice to see my local place filled with people buying old fashioned vinyl.....There are still great stores out there, but many fewer...I think independents will always be here...

That was pre-tax buddy!  After the payment made yesterday, Joe earned $3.80 1/2!

Re: Disappearing (rock) music

Luckily for me, Orlando has a couple of great indie record stores.  I've been preordering JB (and other) CDs at East/West Records on Orange Ave for a couple years just to give them the business.  The owner of the shop is really cool and turned me on to a couple of albums i really love but never would have picked up otherwise (Levon Helm's "Dirt Farmer" chief among them).  Other local shops have more vinyl, which is fun, too, and between them there's plenty of good music to be had - both new and used.  I love the local record stores and I hope they can survive.  So far so good.

I haven't bought a CD in a chain store in several years, although my mother-in-law picked up Joe Satriani's newest album for me for Christmas at Best Buy or something.

just to bring this debate up to date, - recently EMI and Universal have been given the green light to merge,- another sad day and a nail in the coffin for "real" music?

you are correct but imagine the situation 10 times worse? - At least now we do still have some bands/artists that become successful based on artistic talent but the way that the music industry is going those artists will become fewer and fewer as the industry craves quick fix x-factor type of success with what we hear and can purchase dictated by the giants who control so much.

And also be mindful that the future of the music industry is not about us oldies, (or even Joe), - it is about the kids and what music is available to them, AND most importantly the kids that pick up a guitar and try and emulate Joe. - Have a think back guys to what age you were when you first discovered your chosen favoured genre of music.

- There is resurgence of "classic" guitar based rock but is mostly around communities such as this forum, and  the likes of Planet Rock, but the audience demographics might not be wide enough to sustain this niche of the music world going forward. There is some really good young talent out there the likes of VATA, Oli B, Simon McB etc but these guys need to all attract a younger fan base (my sons most worn tee shirt is his VATA Marshall gig one btw) as well as the oldies and that means more exposure which is about air play of more mainstream radio and mentions in music publications.... no need to start on the fake-ness of the likes of Rolling Stone, - but again another publication controlled by music company execs withe expense accounts...so artistic talent gets pushed to one side.

Have a think about the career of ZZ Top and how it dive bombed after their commercial success of the 80's/90's and what a missed opportunity that has been to the music world given that they are probably one of the tightest trio's to have ever played (and there is some stiff competition in there), - they should be filling stadiums around the world now.

Street Team you/we need to look at engagement of youth in my opinion, - I tried a while back to engage with you guys as part of "Blues in Schools" to coincide with Joe touring over here in the South East, but all I got back was a thanks will come back to you response and then nothing... sad

Guitar based rock could go the same way that jazz has, which some may like as they get the self gratification of following a niche music genre, but to my mind the music is better than that.

Sermon over, sorry!

Re: Disappearing (rock) music

Hey,

Don't you know that the corporate executives who live this stuff 24/7 know way better than you or I about music and what we should be listening to?  DO NOT second guess them.  <sarcasm>

I just sent a LOOOOOOOng email to Q104.3, a major rock station in NYC and basically told them to drop dead, as I am done with them.  It is bad enough that they play the same 100 songs, and only those songs permitted by their corporate executive music guru<more sarcasm> but 2 nights ago as I was driving home they were playing songs recorded live from THEIR I heart radio music festival.  What were they playing?  Songs by Pink and No Doubt.  Pure crap that does not belong on a rock station.  Adios 104.3 as I am sure you won't play Joe or BCC as I asked in my email.

Here in NY, 101.9 is back with a vengeance.  They play rock and alternative rock.  New music all the time.

Rant over.

If you look up to the heavens just before the start of every Joe Bonamasaa concert you can see Stevie, Jimi, Muddy, Gary and others leaning over God’s railing jockeying for the best view.
And if you listen, you can hear Stevie say  “ SHHhhhh,  The kids about to start playing.”

Re: Disappearing (rock) music

So do I. But until the younger generation find blues and rock that is the prospect. I try to promote both when teaching, and have played some to students who appreciate the skill and talent but it is impossible to keep backing this up. There is some hope however, at the Colne blue festival this year there wer a lot of 20-30 yr old's present at the events daily.

I don't like I @#$%^^&# heart radio!  What a stooped concept geared to mindless lemmings, those who buy into a FORCED FED corporate package.  Any parent
can tell you that you force feed the baby until one day the child takes charge of itself, manifest in pushing back, spitting, throwing things.  No more pablum crap mommies and daddies, time for the daddies (clueless or zero imagination program directors) and mommies (digital dis [sic] jockeys) to deliver the goods instead of hoarding them and whoring them. Re: Disappearing (rock) music

update on this as it has just been announced tonight that HMV have ceased trading shares and appointed administrators.. That means in most towns now in the UK the ONLY choice for buying CD's will be the food supermarkets; Asda (walmart) etc....which means main stream music ONLY. Choice is now just online retailers who do not pay their taxes....Sad day for the music industry, sad day for High Street's.
