Re: Covers that equal or better the originals
How about this:

Loved it! On the studio version I scrolled down the comments and let out a howl on the second one.

Gotta give it up for Tom. The Welchman hammers this. I'm stunned, preconceptions be damned, just proves again I don't know jive about musicians and their boundaries.

Credit has to be given to Tom's son.... who doubles as his manager, when asked about the choice of songs to sing. An Example: Tom did the, The Artist Formerly Known As Prince, cover of, Kiss That one cover, opened up a whole new younger audience for Tom. So yeah, Tom is COOL!
loved Tom's voice since I was a wee lad, bought the 45rpm It's Not Unusual as a 7 or 8 year old. The horns make it extra special.
Love in Vain (Blues) - The Rolling Stones

You guys are all a little late to this one:

Thread has a different link for the same song.
Tom is a inimitable king of covers in a real sense. Hard to find one he doesn't belly up to and say "hell-oh"!
Rock ON & Keep the Faith,
Rocket
Gary Moore - Shapes of Things Killer! Aerosmith - Train Kept a Rollin Frank Marino- I.m a King Bee
"Billie Jean" - The Civil Wars
Fun version of MJ's great song. Jack's looks a little like Johnny Depp these days.
Neil Young..All Along The Watchtower
Metallica...Whisky In The Jar
Muse...Where The Streets Have No Name
I just noticed today that one of my favorite "cover" albums, Exile On Blues Street, is no longer available on iTunes. That's unfortunate because it's one of the best of the cover albums - only Rush's Feedback is in its orbit. Probably Mick and Keith wanted the competition buried. Some highlights:
Christine Ohlman - All Down the Line - Play this one with the top down LOUD!
Tommy Castro - Rip This Joint - See above.....and yeah, this is my favorite TC song.
Jeff Lang - Sweet Virginia - Incredible slide playing nowhere heard on the original. The best song on the album. Lang's pretty much unknown except for a couple collaborations with Chris Whitley.

Andrea Re & Colin James - Tumblin' Dice - Not as good as the original but Andrea gives it all she's got and Colin's slide playing is more than adequate. Btw, the rhythm section on the album is Double Trouble.
Lucky Peterson - Ventilator Blues - I like this cover almost, but not quite as much as on EOMS. Should mention Lucky's excellent version of "Purple Rain" is better than Aynsley Lister's famous closer.
I've always loved Foghat's version of I Just Want To Make Love To You

Joe Pernice - "I Go To Pieces"
Stumbled across this cover this morning and prefer it to Peter and Gordon's rather sterile version. I've included JP doing the song solo on guitar which is nice as well.
Incubus - Hello (Lionel Richie Cover)

Some words have been changed/added, and the guitar out a little, but was done with a GSOH... I thought it was funny!
Chris Cornell - Billie Jean (Acoustic -Live)

Love Chris's version!
don't remember if I posted this before, but it was put back up on UT recently. Eric absolutely wears this thing out. One of the best Beatles covers ever, imo.

Great cover Tres.
Now I know what the Beatles would have sounded like with Jimi sitting in. Incredible. I'm going to have to listen several times just to get my head around the layers of texture in this cover.
Rick
well, the studio version on high volume sounds amazing, but it's not posted. just love the groove and I know for sure the singing is better. One of my KWS faves. Speaking of which, the new one due out soon will include a cover of the Beatles Yer Blues. Noah should be a perfect fit for that vocal.

cruisin around for more covers and found this, which most have probably already heard. G Mule covering anything is a good thing, but with Joe even better. worn out my welcome on this topic today, I'm outta here, you guys and girls have a fabulous 4th.
