Re: NCAA Basketball

Time to bring this back to life. Tip off madness today. My Aztecs started off ranked 16 vs Utah #25 and ground them down with tough D. Kentucky looking extra tough just crushing Kansas.
A great season is shaping up.

Kentucky is going to be tough to beat, they dismantled Kansas 72-40 last night.

Re: NCAA Basketball

Kentucky could beat a few NBA teams, including mine, the Philadelphia 76ers!!  big_smile Yes, not saying much...

Not sure what to even think about college basketball anymore...the big power houses are breeding grounds for the NBA, students don't even go to class and exit the programs after freshmen year...I like when the little guy makes it far in March, its refreshing. Just saying...

Ahhh! My boys in blue, they are scary good this year! This may well be the best team I've seen in my lifetime living in Big Blue Nation. And I agree Angela, I also believe the kids start younger, are conditioned better and with the AAU leagues play at a higher level of competition. I'm glad we had a lot of players come back this year and every college athlete could take a lesson from Willie Cauley-Stein, he says he loves school and not ready to give up that experience.

Re: NCAA Basketball

always interested in keeping up with KY, our great SEC hope come March. Bama played in a spirited contest last night at Kansas City, which amounted to a road game, vs #13 Iowa State. We hung around cutting it to 5 or 6 at the half but could never catch up and get a lead. Looks like we will rely heavily on the 3 pointer, it wasn't falling last night. Several younguns for Bama worth watching, including Shannon Hale, Ricky Tarrant, and Jimmie Taylor. No fooling, once again we will not make it to the dance.

Re: NCAA Basketball

#15 Aztecs playing for the tourney championship after crushing Pitt. They will have a rematch of the squeaker loss last year against #3 Arizona. This will be a war and a dandy to watch if you can stay up that late back East. Two teams that will most likely be playing in March.

Re: NCAA Basketball

I would say that Bama played a good game at Wichita State last night, but they didn't. Leading the #11 Shockers by 10 with about 7 minutes left in the game, our youngsters went brain dead and could not solve the full court press. The officials helped them out a lot down the stretch but then we always want to blame them first. It was a road game and that is what you typically get, home cooking. This would have been a great road win for us, I lay all the blame at the feet of coach Anthony Grant, and not the players. We played superb defense versus a very talented team, all for naught. just a terrible, terrible loss. We might make the tourney this year, but nobody we face will forget how Bama blew this game by not dealing with the full court press. Bama will see that again and again this year.

Re: NCAA Basketball

we're coming for you Cats, almost everybody else has played well against them so why should this be different. Bama played a good game this week at So Carolina but could not catch them down the stretch, I would call it a good road loss. A win at Kentucky would obviously be a real big deal for us this early into the conference schedule. RTR

And the Tide may get us! Everyone brings their "A+++" game against Kentucky and we haven't done well on the road, should be a great game. Being #1 and undefeated is great but the deeper we get in to the season the more I worry that the loss will come in the tourney. I wouldn't mind to get 1 or 2 behind now before all the hype of going all the way undefeated becomes more pressure for them. In an interview before the Missouri game Coach Cal said he sent the players a text the day after the Ole Miss double overtime game and asked "what did they think had happened to them?" and they all agreed it had become to comfortable for them they needed to get back they way they were at the beginning of the season. They started the game with the platoon system like they had done before Poythress' injury. Almost game time been out running errands haven't had a chance to check the Louisville-Duke score yet?

Re: NCAA Basketball

Aztecs have suffered some key injuries and continue to have the shooting bug. One of the top defenses in the country has kept them in it but without shooters it is always a knuckle biter to watch. New Mexico today here and we hope a win will land the team high in the MW. Good luck all, Lizzee has a pro team at that college!

Re: NCAA Basketball

Indeed they do have a pro team. I didn't even know the game was at our place, their fans were yelling louder than ours and we're at home! It went much worse than I thought it would, Bama looked pretty terrible at times. We may yet make that dance, RTR.

I had the team wrong re Aztecs. It was UNLV who gave us a big scare as the Montezuma Mesa boys came out cold as ice again. The D had the team hanging by a thread but they came roaring back in the last 10 minutes while shutting down the opponents cold  FTW. An amazing stat unequaled in BB (or any other sport) is still running the string. Aztecs have won 117 straight if they have the lead with 5 minutes to go.

At times we do look like a pro team I believe this is probably the best team of my lifetime watching UK basketball. Vandy gave us a good game last night. I am like you Rick except with venue I thought we played Vandy away last night and didn't realize it was at home until it came on tv! nNt sure we would have won had it been in Nashville with their screwed up gym configuration.

You're right Tres I could hear the "Go Big Blue" a couple of times! Big Blue Nation travels and add in the local fans in the area and they can end up with a pretty large contingent!

Florida has lost out 2 SEC in a row doesn't hurt my feelings one bit wink

Re: NCAA Basketball

Very happy fans and team today as the Aztecs great senior forward and team leader Dwayne Polee returned to the court after collapsing unconscious mid game last month, giving everyone a huge scare. He was rushed to the hospital where tests were inconclusive. After a battery of Dr.s and voluminous tests, heart arythmia was the diagnosis and he was cleared to return to play after missing 5 games. The bench picked up the slack during his absence so the team remains in the hunt. Having to play some freshmen lacking experience cost a couple of games on the road but they hung in.  On top of the league and just outside of the top 25 with a solid #18 in RPI rankings, they seem assured of a spot near an 8 seed in the West. They still can't shoot ft's or much from the field but that D still stifles the other team to the point they don't need to score much to win, and win they do with another season over 20 wins. There was a bit of local grousing as Coach Fisher was again stiffed for the HOF. He surely deserves a spot.

Re: NCAA Basketball

Maddening watching my Aztecs let a Cinderella into the mix for a berth in the madness. Ice cold shooting reared its ugly head again, even as their stone wall defense kept a high scoring team from hitting a field shot in a TWELVE minute stretch in the final half for the MW championship. They couldn't stop a slew of treys from the outside so kudos to Wyoming. First trip in 13 years and I'm happy for them.
Regular season co-champs, they are in with a 7 or 8 seed most likely.
They lack one good shooter from being a truly great team. They reduce opponents scoring averages to MLB batting numbers while controlling the pace of the game to glacial speed. Can they go anywhere in the coming tourney? I have hopes and with a bit of luck can see an elite 8. A very deep bench can grind down teams with a few great players. Wishful thinking but possible.

Good luck to all of you that have a team in the mix. Our lady from Kentucky sits in the Wildcatbird seat. smile (no, we can't beat that team, and no one else can either) Put your money on Kentucky's nose 'cause they are freaking awesome! If they could I'd give them a shot to go deep in the NBA playoffs.

Re: NCAA Basketball

Rick - It will be interesting if anyone can beat Lizee's team.  ( Hi Liz wink)My Villanova Wildcats had a good season.  I'm so nervous!! I was listening to ESPN and they were saying 3 teams have bad history of exiting the tourney quickly - Nova, Gonzaga and Notre Dame.  It would be nice to break the curse there. I also agree with some of the vibe out there that Temple may have been snubbed for schools with big football programs. Maybe I'm bias, being from Philly and an alumni.

ESPN was also saying Kentucky is in the easiest division, which comes with such a great record.  Nova's first game against Lafayette is interesting - their coach was a former Nova player-he visits frequently, knows the ins and outs of the team and is a good friend of Coach Jay Wright.  They both wish they weren't playing each other.

Our second potential game is either North Carolina State who beat Duke this year or LSU who lost to Kentucky by only 2 points!! WOW!  I'm hoping to make it pass this round and go a little deeper of course. Fingers crossed...

Not sure if anyone ever follows Nate Silver, he has an excellent track record at predicting presidential elections.  Here is his site and March Madness brackets.

Georgia still has some stuff going on Tres. Exciting day of bb yesterday with all those 1 pt. games down to the wire. There's a lot of parity out there and I'm sure some more big names will be making premature departures.
Ours are up tonight, probably will be over way past your bedtime.
