Re: NCAA Basketball

That looks convincing.
Aztecs are looking pretty strong again. They managed to haul in some fresh talent from the high school ranks beating out top ranked schools for some highly rated talent, Trey Kell being one of the highlights who verbally committed. A home town product who flew under the radar until he blossomed in the off season and was heavily recruited by USC, UCLA,Gonzaga, Kansas, Arizona and others. Time will tell but the season is already a sellout.

Cal of course down played it because they were playing each other. Cauley-Stein lost weight and bulked up, he'll be a force. Randle is a beast, the Harrison twins are going to be awesome, Willis a Kentucky native had a great game.

Missed the UNC-Asheville game, but watched today's and boy, was Randle on fire! I love this team! Still lots of work to do, but the potential is great considering how talented so many of them are already.

Randle was named SEC player of the week this week, 1st of many I'm sure. He has had a double/double in each game so far! We'll see on Tuesday when they play #2 Michigan State on ESPN at 7:30 great early season match up. Always makes it interesting to look back on these games come February and March.

There is a new documentary on Kentucky Basketball called the 6th Man. Done by a young man named Jason Epperson from my hometown of Winchester. If you watched the Steven Spielberg/Mark Burnett reality series called On the Lot a few years back Jason was the runner up. It has been showing in local theaters now for a few weeks the dvd releases this month here is the trailer

If you didn't see this highlight from the exhibition game against Montevallo James Young saves the out of bounds and makes a no look basket there's only one problem!

SDSU Aztecs are going big time. They announced  plans for a dedicated $14.5M practice facility with all the bells and whistles to enhance recruiting. Coach Fisher is making a run at the top echelon of BB. A strong recruiting class with a core of returning players may have them in the mix again at season's end.

Re: NCAA Basketball

interesting night of bball yesterday, kind of figured that Mich St would win that one but Big Blue has nothing to fear.  By end of the year they will have a solid team ready for the tourney. This game was fairly meaningless. Randle tried to carry them on his back in the 2nd half, if they don't have the excessive turnovers and make a few more free throws they are in it at the end. Jay Bilas was very complimentary on their comeback effort.
Don't know if I like the new defensive foul rule instituted, way too many called in these first few games as the officials try to hammer it home. I hope the foul calls will diminish as the season progresses. Alabama suffered from the new rule vs Oklahoma, had guys in foul trouble all night and lost a close one.

oh dear, looks like coach Cal does have a group of "babies". No reason at all to cry after that loss, however it was an emotional game for them in a huge spotlight so it's a bit understood. I predict it won't be their last loss this year, pretty easy bet. But they will win the SEC and be right there come March. Grow up guys, hold your heads up and move on.

I agree with you about the new foul rule. It's tacking on tons of extra minutes to each game with all that starting and stopping and free throws. As a Wildcat fan, of course I was disappointed to see them lose to Michigan State, but it was such an exciting game to watch. The Spartans were great! They were sprinting around and making steals left and right, and it was a good lesson for the Cats, to show them what they'll be facing later in the year. I am stoked to see Randle mature throughout the season. He's great under the basket but has a tendency to lose the ball when getting there, so I hope he cleans that up. They looked better in the game against Robert Morris, but of course, that's nowhere near the level of competition Mich St. brought. It's shaping up to be a fun season! smile

Re: NCAA Basketball

Michigan State looked flatter than a pancake following the UK win against a smart playing Columbia team.  Kentucky is extremely talented and will be the team to beat this year.  Spartans were lucky catching them early.  Love your avatar Liz.

Re: NCAA Basketball

MSU played great and deserve their ranking, every one brings their A game against Kentucky so I knew it would be a tough one. Cal kept saying they weren't playing their best but when you watch them against the teams in exhibition and early season non ranked opponents you think "WOW" they're awesome. One of the drawbacks of the one and out teams is the early season learning curve. I think so many of these young players are so good they're used to carrying their high school teams and don't want to share the ball. Cal was critical of that after the game. Great learning experience for them would much rather lose to them in November than in March.

The last 2 games with Robert Morris and Texas Arlington and the next 2 with Cleveland State and Northern Michigan a salute to long time equipment manager, the late Bill Keightley called the Keightley Classic. Keightley died in unexpectedly in 2008 and had had been with the team since the 60's, he started with Rupp and worked with every coach except Calipari. He was as big a celebrity in Kentucky as the coaches and the players.

Thanks Curby, when Joe was in Louisville a few weeks back he did a funny bit in a southern accent about how he kept getting corrected on his Looeyville pronunciation of Looavul lol

Re: NCAA Basketball

Good comment about losing now instead of March Lizzee. State started cold against highly ranked Arizona and could never overcome a ten pt gap except a run they made late to within five. Too little too late. A great learning experience and less that first five minutes they hung in all game.

Re: NCAA Basketball

OK, time to step up in the NIT kickoff tourney tonight at MSG. to start Alabama gets Duke, yeah I'm hoping for a "quality" loss. lol It's the late game, I believe on ESPN2 at 9:30 eastern time. Duke is only favored by 8, you never know.

Thanks for the heads up Trey.  Traveling tonight north of Atlanta for the night.  Hope Bama can beat those dookies.

Sorry I missed it, I was baking for tomorrow, no satellite on kitchen tv sad I saw the score 10 points hope Bama gave them a good one?

Missed the Cats too, they played at 4:00pm today, it was my last day before 2 week vacation took the Ipod to work thought I was going to listen on the radio! NOT, 1st minute I had to turn it on they were announcing it was half time and we were only up by 3 points.  Never got a chance to turn it back on sad Highlights on the news they had a better 2nd half. I thought I understood them to say Randle broke a record for consecutive double/doubles. These young Cats going to give me a nervous break down with these comeback games.I have to keep reminding myself they're mostly just Freshman! Cal's Facebook post after Cleveland State "Told the guys today, what got you here won't get you there. Time to change the old and create the new" Providence Sunday at Barclay's Center we'll be traveling not sure I'll get to watch??

I missed the Cats yesterday as well. My dad said Randle had to sit out most of the first half after getting two fouls, so his double-double was accomplished mostly in the second half alone. smile And yep, I think everyone in the BBN has been having mini heart attacks with some of these games... It's a great thing to witness, though, even if we take a couple losses along the way: these guys are learning every step of the way and have so much potential.

Re: NCAA Basketball

My Aztecs face a tough one tonight. #20 Creighton who crushed Arizona State last night in the Wooden. What was billed as a fun tourney has turned into a wildcat with top teams all looking to knock off some fatties. National TV exposure as well. A great weekend for NCAA BB enthusiasts! smile
Rick
edit, Wow, this team is looking pretty good as their tenacious D controlled McDermott, one of the top players in the country, and held on down the stretch ftw.  86=80. Now Marquette tomorrow night for the tourney final.
edit,
Tourney champs! Handled Marquette easily. X Thames put down back to back career games. Lots of ball to be played but this should get them ranked. Only loss was to Arizona. They are long, physical and have a good end to end game with very good defense. MWC take heed.

A great day for sports fans in San Diego.
First Chargers win, then the Aztecs faced Kansas in their house and take down their 68 game vs non-conference home streak, never trailing in the game. These guys can play! ESPN analyst Andy Katz named point guard X. Thanes player of the week.

Re: NCAA Basketball

Well... sometimes the better team just has a bad night and plays down to the the level of inferior competition.  As was the case last night when instead of watching that other thing on TV, I watched Kentuckey at LSU.  LSU played above their level and Kentuckey played well below theirs.  Mid season doldrums for the Cats, but no worries.  They have a lock on an invite to the big dance.  dont get to say it often in hoops, but GEAUX TIGERS!!!

I did the same and the O/T thriller before it was a good one too. My Aztecs are up in rarefied air territory now. Way overachieving in what was billed as a consolidation year in the beginning. Too bad the Wooden committee dissed X. Thames by leaving him out of the top 25. He's easily in the  top 10 for POTY honors.
Congrats to Coach Fisher for win #300 in his tenure at SDSU.

Re: NCAA Basketball

I'm thinking Rocket is a little quiet for being a fan of the HOTTEST team in College basketball in the #1 spot!!

Rocket, did you get to watch the Duke game on Saturday? I could only see the beginning before we headed out to a surprise birthday party, but I heard it was really an exciting game with an overtime win for your Orange. (my son kept texting my hubby, thinking he was watching it too)

Sorry I missed a good one...
http://espn.go.com/blog/collegebasketba … r-the-ages

I keep pinching myself about Villanova's ranking.  With the new Big East lineup, I'm not so sure of how everything is fitting into place.

Beware of Creighton.  OMG, they came off a terrible loss and Villanova was their next game.  Talk about a comeback win. They annihilated us on our turf!! At one point they were beating us up so bad...they were winning by over 40 points!! One of their players beat the Big East record on shooting 3's. The opening of the game felt like watching an NBA team play against a middle school team. I don't know as much as Jay Wright, but when a player is that hot, maybe he should have double-teamed him?  Two really great shooters on Creighton and one is the coach's son.  Not looking forward to the rematch on their turf on Feb. 16th.
