Topic: My mind was just blown

Hi, how's it going? I've been playing guitar for about 3 years and I was just reading a Mark Tremonti (Alter Bridge) interview and he talked about Joe Bonamassa. I've been watching videos on YouTube for the past 45 minutes and my jaw has been dropped since. To quote a video description "I was expecting a brilliant guitar player, but he was much better." Seriously WOW.. I was watching metal shredders' videos earlier this morning but this is something else.

I watched a 2007 live performance of "Blues Deluxe" and studio footage of "Ballad Of John Henry" and "Stop!". As songs, Ballad of John Henry was my favorite and Stop! was my least favorite. But the solos on everything were incredible.

Which CD should I listen to first?

Re: My mind was just blown

My favorite studio album is The Ballad of John Henry at this time but I would buy Live From Nowhere in Particular to get what he is all about in the live situation. The DVD Live from the Royal Albert Hall captures that experience as well which is also now available on CD. From there you will want to collect his entire catalog.

Re: My mind was just blown

Welcome Morid. The answer is all of them. lol  LFNIP is a great start as Jim says. Rockpalast DVD is a great look at the Strat phase. There's not a bad cut on any of his releases.

Re: My mind was just blown

Welcome to the forum Morid.

Joe does have that effect on people who hear him for the first time.   When I saw the RAH show, I too was blown away and wondered why I hadn't heard more of him.

My first purchase was Black Rock and have been working my way backward in his catalog of music.  Last purchase was Live from Nowhere in Particular.  As as stated before, it is an excellent choice to get a taste of
his live performances. And the Royal Albert Hall DVD is excellent!!

Enjoy the journey as you explore the world of Joe Bonamassa.

Re: My mind was just blown

I think Live From Royal Albert Hall is a great start, amazing setlist and after seeing it, that was when I got into him.
Live At The Rockpalast is also great, just like all of his stuff in fact  wink . But all the live albums, The Ballad Of John Henry and You and Me are good to start with, so have fun!!!

Re: My mind was just blown

Actually, I would recommend starting at the beginning - " A New Day Yesterday" and work your way forward chronologically.....Warning though....Your mind shall be blown several more times as you realize that Joe is every bit as good as any shredder you have ever heard ! Joe has not made a bad disc yet, although I must admit, I did not enjoy Black Rock quite as much as the others. So much variety as you discover his journey from the 3 piece gig into the studio band he has now.. It's so exciting...enjoy yourself and give us feedback!

I think my personal favorite is "You and Me"

Welcome to Joe's world.....we just live in it!

Re: My mind was just blown

As Jim has already said, I tend to always point people towards LFNIP. Not only is it a live double CD so you get a real flavour for the man and his music, but it is, to my ears, one of the best live recordings I've ever heard.

I don't know whether it was cleaned up, but the sound is just superb. It wasn't my first album of Joe's but it was what prompted me to get everything else I have of his.

It's gonna be expensive straight off, but Xmas is coming so make the list and just get evryone else to buy. You can wait a month or so I would say!

I echo all that murfdog has said. My first CD was "Blues Deluxe", then "A New Day Yesterday". From there I simply bought the whole CD catalogue!! "Black Rock" is not my favourite, either, but it grows on me with each listen. "LFNIP" is a great intro to his live shows, but, if you can, go see him live!
Welcome aboard, enjoy the ride, coz it's magical!!

Welcome to the forum Morid.
YouTube is a great start in getting a feel for what you like best from Joe's catalog.
Personally, I agree with many have said so far: Live from Nowhere in Particular is a great mix of different songs from different studio albums and, IMO, is a great place to start. Eventually, you'll want to have the entire catalog.
If you like Live DVD's, you can't go wrong with any of the three, but I would recommend the Royal Albert Hall show first.

Re: My mind was just blown

Hi!
We share JB and Alter Bridge! This weekend I was lucky anough to see Joe 3 times in a row and my 4th gig was Alter ridge (at the HMH again).
I also would recommend Live from Nowhere in Particular.

Apart from that, I think you should listen to: Pain and Sorrow, The River, Dirt in my Pocket, Yesterday's Song (BCC), and.......... wow there's just too much to mention (just buy it all, you won't regret)!

Re: My mind was just blown

Welcome Morid, i would concur with all who've posted so far!  Enjoy!  smile

just had to come back here and say that i wouldn't recommend Sloe Gin just for the title song, i kinda said that in my previous post but I don't mean that (I'm full of contradiction) Its one of my favorite Joe cds and listening to it the other day i realized i wanna try to clarify what i said I love it all the way thru but particularly 1 thru 5 wow. I don't know why i even answer the questions. The cds are all good  wink once you put one on you won't want to turn it off. sometimes i skip a song or two but just to get to one i like even better

Jane,
Black Night is still one of my all time favorite Joe tunes and Sloe Gin in my top three studio lp's!
