Topic: Tinsley Ellis

When I was in Buddy Guy's club recently I got speaking to a music promoter from Boston at our table and he also has his own blues radio show in Provincetown.

He said that seeing as I liked Joe Bonamassa so much I definitely would like Tinsley Ellis. Well I had never heard of him but went out and bought his Hell or High Water album. Jesus, what an album, can't stop playing it. Stand out tracks are Mystery to me and Feelin no pain.

This guy deserves more recognition so I am spreading the word. Enjoy!!

Re: Tinsley Ellis

I've been a Tinsley Ellis fan for a number of years. I have seen him a number of times and look forward to seeing him again in the future.  Speak no evil is his newest album, its very good. I recommend that you get Highway Man, his live album. I urge you to go see him, he's great live and has a very good band. Jeff, his drummer is one of my favorite drummers to watch live. I also agree that he needs more recognition. My favorite song is A Quitter Never Wins.

Re: Tinsley Ellis

I agree. Tinsley is great. I've only seen him live twice,...once here in Pittsburgh at a small club, Moondogs, and just this Summer at the annual Bluesfest, where I thought he was much better than the 1st time we saw him. Maybe it was the bigger crowd and stage, but I enjoyed him & his band just as much as the headliner, Kenny Wayne Sheppard (who was also great). Besides the Speak No Evil & Hell Or High Water albums, track down these songs... Devil For A Dime, Bringing Home The Bacon, Get To The Bottom, One Sunny Day, Soulful, Ten Year Day, I Got To Moan...etc, etc.

Re: Tinsley Ellis

Tinsley is an amazing but not-too-well-known guitarist/singer/songwriter who is extremely entertaining live...I've seen him a couple of times in small clubs and twice at the Tampa Bay Blues Festival where he put on a smoking show.  His band is always excellent, including his ever-present bassist "The Evil One".

My personal favorite of the albums I've heard is "Storm Warning" where you will find great tracks including the (aforementioned) "To the Devil for a Dime" and "A Quitter Never Wins" (which he wrote, but Johnny Lang, also a fan, made a more popular recording of) and a killer version of Freddie King's "Sidetracked".

I also love "Hell or High Water" and "Live:  Highwayman" is strongly recommended also.  He's been around forever, should be better known.  Like Joe, and one of my other favorites, Warren Haynes, he can play acoustic, electric, slide, rhythm and lead, sing and write catchy or deeply emotional songs.  In other words, the "total package".

If you haven't run across him, definitely check him out.

I seem to recall that he sat in for a few songs with Joe at a show a number of years ago in/around Atlanta, but can't remember the details.

Re: Tinsley Ellis

I've got a slew of Tinsley's stuff... I recommend any of it...
Tinsley is great, I recall Joe posing with him in a picture a few years ago (2002? Don't recall if they were on the same bill though) right around the time of Hell Or High Water and So, It's Like That.
