I agree John Bonham was unquestionably the best of the rock drummers.  Other notables are Keith Moon, Neil Peart and Ginger Baker.

As for the best of the best I'll agree with my Southern friend that you'll find most in jazz bands.  My personal fave is Billy Cobham and his classic album Spectrum with Tommy Bolin.  More recent drummers I like are jazz drummer Tom Brectlein hooking up with Roscoe Beck and Greg Koch on the blues album Live On the Radio, Stanton Moore of Galactic and the drummer that plays with Jim Weider, Rodney Holmes.  Here's Jim's MySpace, click on "No Exit Strategy".  Good stuff!

I know, always 5 days behind. I meant to post on this, Billy C is also a favorite. I had a CD back in the late 90's that was a live one night only recording, a little 4 piece supagroup of Billy, Stanley Clarke, Larry Carlton, and nadja something or other on this electronic windjammer thing. there were only 6 or 7 songs to the whole thing. I cannot remember the name of it but will try and research as my CD was left somewhere in Mobile. Do you remember a CD like this?

Curby, I mailed you this morning and then realized it went out as Tres Smith. was hoping you recognized it from the topic.

Tres,

The name of the album was simply called Live.  Besides Billy, Larry and Stanley, Deron Johnson, and it's Najee, appear with them.  The album was a Sony Records release (7/12/94).  There's a nice version of the Doobies "Minute By Minute" to open things.

that is tremendous there Brack, thanks. I do love me some Neil.
you have a real knack for finding this archive stuff. I was also thinking over the weekend about Charlie Watts, not great technically but the body of work with the big band side projects is impressive. He was one of my favorite drummers growing up, but I gave up on the Stones after Goats Head Soup. His work on Their Satanic Majestys Request is top notch imo.

Thanks Mr Smith... smile Charlie Watts you say.... I'll see what i can find for you..... No worries!

One name I don't think has been mentioned is David Garibaldi from Tower of Power. He just grooves and their whole sound is tight.

Uriel Jones, Benny Benjamin and Pistol Allen -Motown Sessions(Temptations, Four Tops, Smokey, etc)

Freddie White -Earth, Wind, & Fire, Donny Hathaway

Stevie Wonder

Prince

Art Blakey

Tony Williams

Philly Joe Jones

Just start googling or go to youtube and there is a ton of footage of these guys. Trust me, I wouldn't steer you wrong.

Bogie

You mentioned Stevie Wonder- do you mean Stevie himself (who I know is a great drummer) or his long-term drummer from the 70's/80's, the great Dennis Davis?

Dennis, who played on every Bowie album from Aladdin Sane to Scary Monsters (in other words, all the good stuff!) is one of my all time faves. Massive sound. Known as the Groovemeister. Very fast hands, great on the cow horn too (a real feature of his funk drumming). Keith Johns, Stevie's other pianist, is a friend of mine and tells me he (Dennis) is dying of throat cancer which is sad.

Dennis

More Dennis with Bowie (the lead guitarist is a very obscure Canadian- Stacey Hayden, who was amazing and replaced Slick on the tour who was absent, drugged up.)

My two faves

Vinnie Colaiutta and Stew Copeland

Also big raps for Laboriel, Hakim and, (a couple of random ones) Paul Hester (Crowded House) and Clem Burke (Blondie).

JB LP Goldtop No. 290- Aged...rather like me.
