Re: Another American Adventure

You were really lucky to escape the volcano clouds: yesterday all German airports were closed. The experts are not sure how long it will be, but I suppose not so long to present you an extra long time in Maryland. Anyhow: enjoy it!

Now safely in the Maryland woods, I was clearly on one of the last flights out of Schiphol early this morning before air travel in north-west Europe shut down due to the Icelandic ash. The flight I was on today has been canceled for tomorrow, so - my good fortune is in large part down to the fact that I wanted to be here in good time for my first Sonny Landreth show tomorrow night.

Right now, life is very good.  wink

(I have started the hug deliveries, but will have to space them out due to there being so many!)  tongue

Nicely done George!!! Wasn't it a 100 year cloudy period the last time it erupted?
Maybe it will be an extended stay? Would that be OK? Don't forget a hug from me for each of you for the other, then one for each other with my special blessing!

Re: Another American Adventure

I'm glad you arrived safely George, my wife and I are both looking forward to meeting both you & Cathy. smile

Re: Another American Adventure

George was duly impressed with Sonny. He literally sat at his feet thanks to the Sonny Krewe, who got us great seats!! I have received all the hugs, thanks, and I wish this was another gathering of the Masses, I miss you all. Keep your fingers crossed for the Wilmington show tomorrow.   Cathy

Re: Another American Adventure

That sounds great Cathy, Ben and I have Sonny mid May and are looking forward to seeing him. Yeah a gathering of the masses sounds good as we had a blast at the HOB. I am glad to hear that George made it to you safely, tell him we say hi  smile  Long Island isn't so far from Maryland.   The grill is always cookin', the beer is always cold and we like company.

Uh, we haven't got around to that yet....  roll  .......  wink

Today we went to a country/farmers/Amish market up in Pennsylvania Dutch country. The highlight of my day, apart from stuffing my face with all sorts of disgustingly high-calorie stuff (like Shoo fly pie, which I had never heard of), was finding these t-shirts that will shortly be premiering in Amsterdam -  lol

Re: Another American Adventure

My pleasure, Ben.  wink

Having achieved my power washing badge last year and my Rambo power blowing one earlier this visit, I was looking forward with keen anticipation to completing the set with the much coveted mini-tractor lawn-mowing badge.  tongue

Alas, Cathy felt unable to award me this one as I got stuck going up a ridiculously small hill. She said I wasn't using enough  power and had selected the wrong gear. I think the witch put a hex on the thing.  wink

I had a few other memorable firsts, though - my first tree blocking our path in the middle of the night, which required reversing some distance before detouring for miles - this amazing (to a city boy) event allowed me to make my first ever 911 call! I also (out of desperation) paid $3.60 for a packet of cigarette papers that would cost less than a dollar at home.  neutral

Tomorrow's mild, sunny weather will ensure that I finally get to experience the great river adventure that I've heard about for two years now - miles upstream by boat to a small island with a cabin lacking all mod cons. Pics to follow.

Finally, a short comment on the lane discipline of most drivers once they hit an interstate - execrable, grossly stupid, utterly unbelievable to a European driver - while at the same time I found most driver's behavior on minor roads or at four-way stops signs to be admirable. A bizarre contrast.

edit - how could I have forgotten my gold star for tending a log fire above and beyond the call of duty?  big_smile I was really pleased about that, since we ain't got no fireplaces where I come from and my previous encounter with an open fireplace was about 35 years ago. I done good.  cool

Re: Another American Adventure

George, hill??? Oh yeah, it's flat where you come from. I'll grant you a gentle incline. wink Oh well, we got the shot anyway, even though Cathy gave you a fail, it looked like at least a half Rambo credit to me.  lol Good luck on the river adventure. Watch out for the bloodsuckers if you go wading. That sounds like a neat trip. You are getting a good wilderness survival education out there. Have a ball on the continuing adventure. And yes, many American drivers are idiots. Most would not pass European driver tests.

Re: Another American Adventure

OMG George - that is simply HILARIOUS .... I just couldn´t keep from underlining this picture: http://www.flickr.com/photos/49663389@N … 835943755/ with THIS song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFuAbb_deZ8 in my head ... wouldn´t it fit perfectly??
And yeah, you considering this a "hill" just shows me that you have lived in the beautiful land of the Dutch for too long now....  lol

I´m with you in thought for the river adventure ... wish I was there too! Have fun and post some pictures for us poor folks who can´t be there. Last years river adventure was one of the highlights of the whole trip - and next day in NYC ... what a contrast!

Big hug to the witch and her almighty tractor-man,
Eva

Re: Another American Adventure

I'm happy now. Seen the tractor. Seen George on the tractor. Thanks Cathy and George  smile

Hope the water adventure goes/went well. More pics please.
