Big Jeff...They will always be "angry young men of the 70's" to me...Piss on the British Pop band stuff...Thanks for refocussing my "it's a #@$@# getting old" syndrome...

They remained angry right up until the time Pete crucified himself while windmilling on a Strat, remember that???

That had to hurt.....

Re: The Who @ the Super Bowl

I am stuck in the middle on my opnion on the Who 's performance. On the one one hand I thought it was good.Ya they are getting old ,"too old for rock and roll"?If you frame it in "for their age" they did a great job.I saw them about 8 years ago for their Quadrophenia tour and they looked and sounded better, and Entwisle was still there. So I do love the band and would still go to see them if I had the chance so tip the scale to the good side.
I think the younger generation,no pun intended, probably sees them as boring old geezers for the most part. But I still am a fan.

The Who WERE the original punks, back when the Mods ruled or was it the Rockers. Man I love the Quadrophenia movie with Sting playing the "bellboy".

Hi Stu,

I totally understand what you're saying.  The most I was ever hit over the head by any aging rocker, was seeing Leon Russell a few years ago...its different than your feeling since I had this fantasy crush on Leon for years starting in the 70's tongue, http://www.wolfgangsvault.com/leon-russ … 17.htmlbut ...when I saw how he aged and was shuffling on stage and needed wheel chair assistance...it took me days to get over it.  And my hubby said, don't ever bring me to see him again...I'm making him sound cruel, but in reality, he treats alot elderly and listens to sad health stories all day long and if he wasn't so kind & compassionate, they wouldn't open up to him.  He seems to buffer himself outside of work to stay grounded.

And the first thing my hubby said when he saw Pete on the stage was...I'm glad he's wearing a hat....and later on...geez, I wish he'd button his shirt. big_smile  Actually, this is making me really tune into my hubby; he's getting a little melancholy on me with the approaching empty nesters, our 2nd son went off to college this year and my daughter's leaving next year and I don't laugh at all his guy jokes, he really misses his sons...

Leon is a trooper, he underwent brain surgery Jan. 13th and still performed at the Grammy's. His mobility these days could be due to a physical ailment he has lived with most of his life having to do with his spine or one leg being shorter. I read about it years ago and it kept him out of military duty. I don't know anybody who is more deeply involved in the recording biz than Leon, he's a national treasure. Hard to believe he has not been inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.

Sometimes this Forum chat is so in-sync.  I was having a discussion this weekend with my 20 yr old about Leon Russell and he had never heard of him and we listened & watched some Leon and here you guys are now discussing Leon..... wink

Re: The Who @ the Super Bowl

jdawg-I didn't know anything about Leon's spine/limb length issue...wow...and brain surgery!!! Trooper is putting it mildly!!  I can't remember who Leon was the warm-up for last time I saw him, maybe Dave Mason, but during intermission some of the chit-chat among attendees was really harsh, it really bothered me.

I remember hearing this interview with Ringo one time about why he still tours, still puts out albums, especially since money is not an issue for him...its what he does, what he knows, he needs to keep the creative juices flowing.  Sometimes you hear stories about folks that don't do well in retirement, they miss the daily mental stimulation.  Good for Leon, he's great on keys & his vocals are still superb, such a unique voice...  I'm going to crank up Youngblood in Leon's honor!!!   wink

Patty-that sort of stuff happens to me all the time, in the Bonaworld and beyond... smile

It was the era of the Mods and Rockers, The Who were firmly in the "Mod Camp". I always think of, Lou Reed as the original Punk! Velvet Underground ect.....

I guess I'm in the minority. I'm a long standing Who fan, and it's my opinion they've produced some of the best music ever made...but for me it was painful to watch.

Maybe because it reinforced my own mortality and the fact that I'm getting older too? I dunno...they're a shell of their former self.

I've got to give 'em props for giving it a go, but I think maybe it's time to start featuring acts at the top of their game (or at least a little less further removed from it).

good post if there was a clappy smilie icon available I would post it! Have a smile instead smile

Not sure what is worse, - hanging on playing the back catalogue for too long or doing a Rod Stewart and playing old mans music, - what a waste when you think of his Faces stuff, but I guess he needs the money or the alimony big_smile

My sister & I caught a couple of Rod Stewart concerts and they both rank right at the top of GREAT evening of entertainment...."the old mans music" was great also ......maybe a little outside of the box....plus I gotta' go back to the age thing.....If you can be in your 60's and put on the kind of show he put on, then I want to be Forever Young, too.  wink  And the voice.....

Re: The Who @ the Super Bowl

The who are one the  best stadium live bands ever. They were the first ones to master loud and clear sound (Zeppelin, ac/dc and the rest could not do this). Their live shows are amazing for every reason. Late last year I saw them at a small venue of just 800 people and it was a real blast, they did it just for fan club members. They still got it after all these years. Have not seen the Superbowl Show but I would expect it was a visual overload.
