Re: Derek Trucks Band wins Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album!

Derek Trucks certainly deserves that, no doubt about that. But where is Joe in the Best Contemporary Blues Album listing?
To me John Henry is the album of the year and I can't believe it didn't make it into the top 5 among the Blues or Rock album lists.

You actually answer the question with your final sentance, it's too rock for the blues list. There are a few blues songs on John Henry, but not enough to make it in the top list.

Well done Derek! smile

I am not sure if that´s the point. I rather see a main reason -as Vette has already mentioned-  that Joe is with a relatively small label (which has a lot of advantages), Derek is on Sony.

Now, now.  Y'all don't want to make the blues purists poop their pants. tongue

What Joe has done is brilliant.  Think Led Zep without the heroin.  Nobody could categorize them either.

Caveman?  Hard Rock producer.  Also brilliant, but hardly a "blues guy."

When he's good and dam ready Joe will cut a blues classics type album that will be off the charts.  He's having a good time now and I say more power to him.

In the meantime congrats to DT!

If I was gonna put Derek in a category in my library of music he would end up sitting all by himself since he's so diverse. Rock shelf, Blues shelf, Jazz shelf, Country shelf, R&B shelf, Bluegrass shelf, and the Derek shelf.

Re: Derek Trucks Band wins Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album!

It's all industry back- patting anyway - a big multinational like Sony will want a good return on their investment, so will spash the cash and do what it takes to get their artists in the public eye. Nobody "wins" - music's an art form, not a sport. What really matters is what the fans think - how much they appreciate what an artist produces - and both Derek and Joe have satisfied their huge, loyal, fan bases, and gained many more fans along the way with TBOJH and Already Free.

Congratulations to Derek (if that's what floats his boat! wink).

But........... Joe get's this year's ICON award! big_smile

Ian

PS - Big Jeff - I say this IMHO, and I'm not even sure it was what you were suggesting, but I dont beleive Already Free would satisfy the purists any more than TBOJH  - I'm with J Dawg (Although I think he missed the gospel out lol)

It was tongue in cheek.  I agree with you.  See post #13.  They have both managed to define their own niche.

Derek has said that he wants the music to speak for itself.  Who wouldn't love a Granny?...but still...

Idunno. I don't have one.

Post #13 - Youre right - as always.
(How did I miss that - somebody musta been messin wit my head  wink )

Anyway - I'm sure they gather dust - that's Grammys , not Grannys. ( My Granny was a mean dust gatherer though - rest her soul smile )

Re: Derek Trucks Band wins Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album!

I realized after I filled my stomach that I was remiss...and not to hijack Derek's thread...but Joe Bonamassa does play blues like no artist out there under 60.  The list of gut-punch, butt-kick blues tunes he plays are second to none.  They are too numerous to mention.

I can sit backstage or in the balcony and get plumb shivery when they rip into some of that stuff.  And I'm a jaded old grump about some of that stuff.

Sorry Joe, musta been the surgery. big_smile  I'll try to do better.

Hey, you know what this does for Derek? Now on all of those concert posters, instead of "The Derek Trucks Band," it'll say "GRAMMY AWARD WINNING Derek Trucks Band!" big_smile

Re: Derek Trucks Band wins Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album!

Congrats to Derek and his band, and all the others who contributed to this album (including the delightful Susan - guess she kind of got a grammy after all).

This album was one of my all-time favorites from the first time I heard it. My son and I danced to "Back Where I Started" at his wedding - perfect song for us.  J Dawg was close about the shelf - there has to be a Derek shelf because he sure doesn't fit into any regular categories.

Hopefully Joe's turn will come - but even if it never does, in my book he doesn't need any awards - he makes music that touches me and many, many other people and I'm sure his stuff will pass the test of time. (IMHO can you see anyone wanting to listen to Taylor Swift or whoever from that same vein 50 or even 10 years from now?)

Re: Derek Trucks Band wins Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album!

Have to say i don't think it's fair to suggest Trucks won a Grammy because he's on a large label. He's been with that label for years but this was the first time he has won this award. Ramblin Jack Elliot won an award and he's on a small label...

I would agree that Trucks is not pure blues, yet I guess the award nomiators don't mind if it strays into country, soul, funk or gospel as it's all roots music, but if it strays to rock, that you won't get a blues grammy. Great news for Derek, yet I don't think Joe is suffering for not having one. smile

Re: Derek Trucks Band wins Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album!

love derek trucks, but don't give a damn about these awards anyway, praticularly grammies.  i think the whole spectacle does more harm than good for music.  did anyone see some of those performances.  is that really what music is about?  not to me, and never will be.  that tribute to leonard cohen was probably the most distasteful musical performance i have ever seen.  i like music that is about music, not some stupid production and skimpy outfit ultra choreographed dance routines.  #### the grammies
